BY '2, ATTORNEY/l Patented Jan. 14,. 1930 DOMINICK J. CALDERAZZO, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK BUILDING WALL, MATERIAL, AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME Application filed November 30, 1928. Serial No. 322,608.
This invention relates to building walls. More particularly it is directed to a wall surfacing simulating brickwork and the like and the method of making the same.
An object of this invention is to provide a simple and economical process for finishing stucco walls and the like to give the same a wide variety of highly decorative effects such as simulated brickwork and the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved building Wall of the character described which shall be compact and rugged in construction, which shall be finished in a highly-decorative manner and yet be practical toa high degree.
' Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which 1S shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of thls invention,
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a wall made in accordance with the invention with portions broken away to show the various layers comprising said wall.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a portion of a wall embodying the invention. Said wall comprises the usual wire netting 11 secured to any suitable backing such as wood siding (not shown). Covering said netting 11' is a layer 12 of stucco, rough cement or mortar. -This layer of cement. provides a backing for a relatively thin layer 13 of cement and mortar colored in any suitable manner as by mixing with paint. Said layer 13 .may be applied by trowelling or in any other manner suitable for providing a smooth even surface 14. If desired this layer may be applied in its material color, that is, in the natural color of the material. A second layer 15 of cementitious material 60 preferably mixed with a paint contrasting with the color of layer 13, is applied over the latter layer. Said layers 13 and 15 are of substantially equal thickness and are of simi-. lar material and similarly applied, except that said layers are made with contrasting a color contrasting with the colors of both layers 13 and 15, and is preferably of the color that bricks. are usually made of. To produce a lasting coating, the paint may be 05 mixed with fine cementitious' materiall The resulting material must be of such consistency as to permit brushing the same over layer 15.
To produce a finish simulating brickwork, the outer layer of paint 16 may be grooved or chiselled in any suitable manner to reveal the adjacent layer 15. Horizontal lines 17 and vertical lines 18 may be thus cut out to make a design of brickwork .19 since the ,grooves present a color contrasting with that of the outer coating. If desired, the grooves may be made deeper as shown at 20 to reveal the layer 13 and thus produce a different color for simulating the mortar joints between the bricks.
Effects other than brickwork may be pro duced by suitably cutting or grooving the outer layer in any desired design. Further, highly decorative effects may beproduced by exposing portions of both layers 13 and 15.
The decorative appearance of the brickwork may be enhanced by applying scattered irregular colored spots to the outer coat 16 to give the effect of colored pebbles or stones mixed in the bricks. Such spots 21 are pref- 90 erably applied to said outer layer before the grooving operation.
' It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well 9 adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. I
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention. and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set 1% forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: v
1. The process of finishing building walls which consists of applying a layer of colored cementitious material to said wall, and applying over said layer a coating of paint of a color contrasting with that of said layer, and thereafter removing portions of said coating to reveal portions of said layer to produce a design.
2. The process of finishing building walls which consists of applying a layer of colored surfacing material to said wall, thereafter applying a second layer of colored surfacing material over said first layer and thereafter applying a coating of paint over the outer layer, the colors of said layers and coating contrasting with one another, and thereafter removing portions of said coating to reveal .portions of said outer layer in predetermined design.
3. The process of finishing building walls which consists of applying a layer of colored surfacing material to said wall, thereafter applying a second layer of colored surfacing material over said first layer, and thereafter applying a coating of paint over the outer layer, the colors of said layers and coating contrasting with one another, and thereafter removing superimposed portions of said coating and outer layer to reveal portions of said inner layer to produce a design.
4. The process of finishing building walls which consists of applying a layer of colored surfacing material to said wall, thereafter applying a second layer of colored surfacing material over said first layer and thereafter applying a coating of paint over the outer layer, the colors of said layers and coating contrasting with one another, and thereafter removing portions of said coating to reveal portions of said outer layer and removing superimposed portions of said coating and outer layer to reveal portions of said inner layer to produce a decorative effect showing portions of said layers and coating in predetermined design.
5. The process of finishing building walls which consists of applying a layer of colored surfacing material to sa d wall, thereafter applying a second layer of surfacing material having a color contrasting with said first layer over the latter, thereafter applying a coatin of paint havin a color contrasting with t at of both said layers over the outer layer, thereafter a )plying irregularly scattered spots of sur acing material having a color contrasting with that of said coating over the latter, and thereafter removing portions of said coating to reveal portions of said outer layer and removing superimposed portions of said coating and said outer layer to reveal portions of said inner layer to produce a decorative effect showing portions of said layers and spotted coating in predetermined design.
6. In a building wall of the character described, comprising a layer of stucco, a layer of colored cementitious material superimposed over said first mentioned layer and a coating of paint superimposed over said outer layer, said coatin having cut-away portions for exposing sai layer of cementitious material in predetermined design.
7. In a building wall comprising a layer of relatively rough cementitious material, a plurality of superimposed layers of contrastingly colored cementitious material, and a coating of paint superimposed over said layers, portions of said coating being cut-away to expose the outer layer of cementitious material, and additional superimposed portions of said coating and outer layer being cut-away for exposing said portion of another layer of cementitious material for exposing a plurality of colors in predetermined relief design.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
