HENRY A. SMITH AND HENDRIOK B. WILKINS, OF NICHOLSON, PA.
IM'PROVEMENT IN COMBINED STOVE POKERS AND TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 1 74,645, dated March 14, 1876; application filed December 29, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY A. SMITH and HENDRIOK B. WILKINs, of Nicholson,'ii1 the county of Wyoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combined Stove Poker and Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our inven tion, showing the jaw open; and Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the jaw closed.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanyin g drawings denote the same parts.
Our invention has for its object to provide for general use a combined fire poker and tongs; and it consists in pivoting a blade or jaw of peculiar construction to an ordinary fire-poker, as I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A represents a fire-poker, having a toe or bent end, a, and the usual wooden handle, a. B is a jaw or blade, pivoted to the poker at b, and having a socket or handle, 0, bymeans of which the jaw can be opened or closed. When the jaw B is closed it fits snugly against the poker, and does not in the least affect the efficient operation of the latter.
When it is desired to use the device as a pair of tongs, the operator grasps the handle a, inserts his thumb in the socket U, and opens and closes the jaw B with ease.
The socket O, besides serving as a means for operating the jaw B, acts as a guard to the hand when the device is used as a poker.
The whole is very simple and compact, and can be manufactured at a small expense.
We claim as our invention The combined poker and tongs herein described, consisting of the two blades A a B, pivoted together, one of them having the thumb-socket 0, arranged at right angles to the line of the blade, and the other having the straight handle a, extending beyond the socket 0.
