DUPLEX ENvELoPE Fild sept. 13, 192e .www l mfg Patented l Mar. .'18, 1930 WILLIAM HQ RIFE, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS DUPLEX ENVELOPE Application led September 18, 1928. Serial No. 805,670.
This invention relates to an improved du'- plex envelope of a type designed to provide separate inner compartments within the body of an envelope, each compartment being adapted to receive mail matter of a classification different from that received by the other compartment.
Another object of my invention is to provide an envelope of a type particularly adapted to effect an economy of time, labor and material by a simplified construction.
Additional objects and advantages of the method and construction will appear more fully inthe hereinafter specification, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
F ig. 1 isk an inside plan view of lo`pe before sealing;
Fig. 2 isa fragmentary front view of the construction shown inFig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the reverse side of the envelope; l
Fig. 4 -is a transverse section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3.;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary longitudinal seotion takenon line -6-6of Fig. 3, the flaps shown in the right hand side of 3 being my envetucked within their respective compartments; l
Fig. 7`is a fragmentary plan View of a modified form of the construction shown in Fig. 1, whereby inspection of the flap of the smaller .container may be made when the -larger iap is sealed thereover; and
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view of the construction shown in Fig. 7, when folded to inclose and forward mail matter.
In the drawings, 11 is the body portion of a duplex envelope embodying my invention, having top and bottom iiaps 12 and 13 respectively, a permanent closure Hap 14 and a sealing ap 15. Gummed or otherwise suitably secured to the top flap 12 of the body portion of the envelope is a sheet of paper stock 16 having a flap 17, with a gummed body portion 18, the sheet `16 in this manner providing a small compartment 19 which 5 may be used as an enclosure for rst dass sure for said envelope when affixed to the mail matter, if desired, when the ap 17 is sealed. v
In the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8, 15' designates a cut-away portion on the Hap 15. When the gummed portion 22 is folded over, the flap 15 may be sealed thereby over the smaller iap 17 in a manner to disclose the postage stamp on the latter, and whether or not the smaller fiap is sealed for first class mail matter or merely tucked in the small compartment 19.
It will be observed that b the construction shown I am enabled to e ect a substantial saving of paper, since the flap 12 serves as the back wall of the small com artment 19 and also as one of the closure aps for the back of the larger envelope. I have found it desirable at times in the manufacture of the construction shown, tolirst -cut the paper stock into the shape displayed ir Fig. 1 and then to apply the gum to the borders, to be followed by the gumming on of the sheet 16, these steps being expeditiously accomplished by machine process.
It is to be understood that slight variations and changes may be made in the construction shown without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention described and illustrated; hence the inventon is not tobe confined to the details literall as set forth, as I desire to avail myself o such variations and embodiments as fairly lie within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure lby Letters Patent is:
1.` A duplex envelope comprising a.v body portion having top, bottom and side flaps, one of said side flaps providing a permanent clofolded and glued top and bottom flaps, said top flap having a single sheet of paper glued to its inner side to provide a small receptacle between said paper sheet and said top flap, .said small receptacle being within the large compartment provided by the body portion and the co-acting top, bottom and side flaps,
,and an individual sealing llap for said small receptacle and said large compartment.
A duplex envelope comprising a body portion having top, bottom and side aps adapted to fold over and provide a compartment for receiving mail matter, a single sheet of paper glued to the inner surface of said top ap to form a small compartment, said single sheet of paper also having a sealing flap projecting out of said compartment and adapted optionally to be tucked within said small compartmentand to be glued on the outside portion of 'said outer flap to rovide a vseal for first class mail matter, an al'lap on said body portion adapted to be option, I ally tucked into the larger compartment or to be sealed over on the outside portions of said top and bottom flaps whereby both the large and smaller compartments may be sealed against inspection if desired.
3. A duplex envelope formed of a sheet of paper cut to providetop, bottom and side flaps when folded, a second sheet of aper gummed to the inner surface of one o said flaps to form a small compartment, said `first mentioned sheet of paper providing a large compartment when the top,bottom and side flaps are folded and gummed, a flap on said second sheet of paper serving as a seal for said small compartment, an additional fiap on the irst mentioned sheet of paper for closing both of said compartments, said additional flap having a cut. away portion whereby when the additional ap is sealed over the flap on the said second sheet of paper, a space on said last mentioned flap will be disclosed to indicate the postage thereon and its position on theinside or outside of said small compartment.
4. A duplex envelope formed of a blank cut to provide top, 'bottom and side flaps, one of y said flaps having a comparatively thin sheet of paper aiiixedV to the inner side thereof to form an inner compartment, said inner coml partment beine contained in the larger compartment provided by the folding of said top,
Ibottom and side fla s of said blank, one of said side iiaps havlng a cut away portion providing a means for disclosing a flap on the said sheet of paper when folded thereover.
5. A duplex envelope formed of a sheet of paper cut to provide top, bottom and side iaps when folded, a second sheet of thinner paper alixed to the inner 'surface of one of said flaps to form a small inner compartl ment within the larger compartment provided by the folding of said top, bottom and side flaps, one of said side flaps having a out away portion providing a means of determining whether or not the small compartment has been sealed and whether postage has been provided on the small sealing Hap for said small compartment.
name to this specilication.
