The invention relates to new and useful improvements in nozzle closures for containers.
An object of the invention is to provide a closure for nozzles wherein the inner sealing closure is shaped after it is seated so that it cannot be removed without deforming the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a dual closure of the above type wherein a sealing gasket is clamped to the nozzle by the outer closure so as to provide a seal for the container before the inner seal is removed and after said inner seal is broken or removed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a dual nozzle closure of the above type wherein the nozzle breast is provided with a seating recess for the inner sealing closure so that a sealing gasket may be pressed into sealing contact both with the inner sealing closure and the nozzle breast by the outer closure.
These and other objects Will in part be obfully disclosed.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of a container having the improved dual nozzle closure applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of the nozzle and a portion of the inner sealing member before it is seated in the nozzle.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showmg the mner sealing member'seated in the nozzle, but before it is deformed to physically secure the inner seal to the nozzle breasts.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showmg the inner sealin member as deformed for physically securing said inner seal to the nozzle breast so that said inner seal can not be removed without deforming the same.
The invention is directed broadly to a dual nozzle closure for containers. The container is provided with a projecting nozzle through which the container is filled or emptied. The nozzle is provided w1th an inwardly projecting breast centrally of of the breast. The opening through the breast is closed by an inner closure which seals the same. This inner closure has a central depressed portion which extends down into the opening. The side walls of the depression are substantially vertical when the closure is inserted. There is a flange extendin outwardly from the vertical wall forming t e depression in the closure which is seated in the recess in the outer face of the breast of the nozzle. After the closure has been placed it is then expanded by a suitable tool so as to enlarge the lower end thereof, placing the wall of the depression substantially at the same angle as the -wall of the shoulder on the breast. The depression in the breast is preferably so proportioned that the outer face of the shoulder of the inner closure is substantially flush with the outer face of the breast.
The nozzle is provided with securing means for an outer closure. Between the outer wall of this outer closure and the inner sealing closure is a sealing gasket or disk which extends all the way across and is forced by the outer closure into firm sealing contact with the breast of the nozzle in the region outside of the inner seal, and also into firni sealing contact with the shoulder on the inner closure.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the invention is shown as applied to a container consisting of a body portion 1 which is provided with a nozzle 2 secured thereto in the usual way. This nozzle 2 is provided with threads which are adapted to engage threads in a flan e 3 of an outer closure 4. Instead of threa s any suitable means may be used for securing this outer closure to the nozzle.
The nozzle 2 is provided with an inwardly projecting breast 5. Said breast has a central opening therethrough and the extreme inner portion of the breast is bent downwardly and outwardly, thusforming a retaining shoulder 6. This retaining shoulder is set at an acute angle to the plane of the breast. The breast is also provided with a depression 7 forming a recess all the Way around the edge of the opening in the breast. Tins opening is adapted to be closed by an nner closure 8. The inner closure 8 is provided with a shoulder 9 which is adapted to seat in the recess 7. The recess 7 is preferably of such dimensions that the outer face of the shoulder is substantially flush with the outer face of the breast in the region between the recess and the outer wall of the nozzle. The inner closure 8 has a central depression which provides a vertical wall 10. After the container has been filled the inner closure is placed in the opening as shown in Fi 3 with the shoulder thereof resting on the breast and housing in the recess 7. After this inner closure has been thus placed it is deformed by a suitable tool placed in the central depression thereof and operated so as to expand the lower end of this depressed portion of the inner closure. This brings the wall 10 into substantial alinement with the wall 6 on the breast as shown in Fig. 4. When the inner closure has been thus expanded it will be firmly held to the nozzle and cannot be removed without deforming the inner closure. The container therefore cannot be opened and the contents removed without deforming this inner closure or puncturing the same. This insures that the contents of the container will not be tampered with. As shown in the drawings, the face of the breast at the recess 7 and flange 6 is coated with a sealing material, as indicated at 9, which aids in producing a tight seal when the inner closure is placed and secured to the container bod A: noted above, the outer face of the shoulder 9 of the inner closure is flush with the outer face of the breast. In the outer closure 4 there is a sealing gasket 11. This sealing gasket is in disk form and extends all the way across the breast of the nozzle. The outer end of the outer closure is substantially horizontal and when this outer closure is screwed onto the nozzle it will firmly press the sealing disk into contact with the breast of the nozzle and also into contact with the shoulder of the inner closure. This produces a seal in the region outside of the inner closure so that there is no possible leakage of the contents of the container between the joined metal parts of the inner closure and nozzle. The sealing gasket pressing against the shoulder 9 will further insure a firm seating of the shoulder on the breast of the nozzle. There is no possible chance for the contents of the container to leak through this joint and soil the outer face of the inner closure or escape between the connecting means for the outer closure and the nozzle. Furthermore, when the inner closure is punctured or removed by deforming; the outer closure, when again applied to the nozzle, will make a tight sealing contact with the breast of the nozzle and thus seal the container. The sealing of the container is accomplished by the outer nozzle while the closing of the container so as to prevent tampering therewith is brought about by the inner closure which cannot be removed without deforming the same. The contact between the scaling disk and the breast of the nozzle is throughout the extended flat region of the breast bet ween the recess and the outer edge of the nozzle, and this extended surface insures a very ellicient seal.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
\Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A container comprising a body portion provided with an inwardly extending breast having a central opening leading to the container, said breast having a depending retaining shoulder at said opening, an inner closure having a central depression adapted to extend into said opening and capable of being expanded into engagement with said retaining shoulder for securing the closure to the container, said breast having a recess in its outer face at said opening and said inner closure having a horizontal flange adapted to fit in said recess being of sutficient depth so that the upper face of the hori zontal flange of the inner closure is substantially flush with the outer face of the breast, an outer closure, means for securing the outer closure to the container, and a thin sealing disc disposed within said outer closure and adapted to be pressed thereby into sealing contact with the flange of the inner closure and the breast of the container in the region outside of said flange.
2. A container comprising a body portion having a nozzle provided with an inwardly extending breast and a central opening leading to the container, said breast having a depending retaining shoulder at said opening, an inner closure having a central depression adapted to extend into said opening and capable of being expanded into engagement with said retaining shoulder for securing the closure to the nozzle, said breast having a recess in its outer face at said opening and said inner closure having a horizontal flange adapted to fit in said recess. said recess being of sufficient depth so that the upper face of the horizontal flange of the inner closure is substantially flush with the outer face of the breast. an outer closure, means for securing the outer closure to the nozzle, and a thin CHARLES J.
