Description
S. BINGHAM.
MANUFACTURE OF BOXES.
Patented AprilZS, 1876.
N'PEIERS, PNDTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C U NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLON BINGHAM, OF CONKLINGVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,420, dated April 25, 1876; application filed February 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S0L0N BINGHAM, o Gonklingville, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, in"which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box set up, and having the external groove partially cut therein, which severs the cover from and lets it down upon the box. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section thereof, showing the internal groove cut in the box or stufi' before the box is set up, and which, after uniting with the external groove to sever the cover from the box, allows the cover to fit down upon and around the latter; andFig. 3 is a perspective view of detached portions of my box, exhibiting the manner in which its corners are put together. 7
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in boxes; and it consists in grooving or channeling the stuff from which the cover and body of the box are jointly to be made, near its upper or one end, upon one side, and upon its opposite side cutting or severing the said parts and adapting them to each other, substantially as hereinafter more fully specified.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it.
In the annexed draWing,A A refer to my box, Fig. 1 showing its cover A in a state of embryo. B is. an internal groove cut on the inside of the box, or on that portion thereof which is to constitute the flange c of the cover,
, about half the thickness of the stuff of the box,
and B is an external groove cut on the exterior of the box, and having its upper edge in a line with the lower edge ofthe first-named or inside groove B, by which, it will be observed, that the cover 0 will be severed from the box, and its flange c allowed to slip down around the reduced portion a, and rest upon the shoulder a of the box, all of which arising from grooving the box as stated. The manner or process of bringing about this result is as follows: First, the stuff from which the box is to made, and before the latter is set up, is grooved upon what is to be the inside of the box,a short distance from its upper or one end, say about half its thickness next, after the box has been set up, it is grooved upon its exterior, so as to cause the upper edge of said groove to stand in a line with the lower edge of the first-named or internal groove, as above stated, the effect of which, it is obvious, is to sever the cover thus formed from the box. Of course the said grooves so cut the stuff or box as to sever the parts at one operation.
The advantages of the above construction are, the box and cover are formed out of one and the same piece, consequently the work performed with precision and rapidity, and the two manufactured almost simultaneously, effecting a saving of time, labor, and expense. The bottom and top are slipped into grooves, as shown in Fig. 2, at the time of setting up the box. The corners of my box are put together or united by a series of grooves,d 6, formed in the crown and base, and a single one, f, in the shaft or paneled portion g of the female portions of the body of the box, and a series of tenons, h t, on the crown and base of the male portions thereof, but the paneled portions are provided with veneers k k, which cover the grain ends of the said female portions of the box, which, if left exposed, would, to a greater or less extent, mar or deface the appearance of the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The herein-described method of making boxes by grooving or channeling the stud from which the cover and body are jointly to be made near its upper or one end, upon one side, as shown at B c, and upon its opposite side, as shown at B a a, the said grooves severing the said parts and. adapting them to each other, substantially as and for the purpose described.
SOLON BINGHAM.
