Serial Io. amiss.
In moving picture theaters utilizing the apparatus for synchronizing the words spoken by the actor with the pictures on the screen it has been the custom heretofore to place the loud speakers back of the projecting screen. This results in a muflled tone and the fine or lesser sounds ried.
An object of my invention is to incorporate a speaker unit directly with the projecting screen whereby the screen acts as the transmitting unit of the speaker, thus providing greater clarity and a more natural and accurate reproduction of sound.
Afurther, object is to provide a screen loud eaker which is simple in construction, and e ectivein operation. 1
Other objects, advantages, and features of invention. may appear fromthe accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description, and the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a motion picture screen incorporating my improvement.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.
' Figure 3 is a rear elevation. Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 4, 4 of Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the moving picture screen 1 comprises a ame 2 upon which a canvas covering, or the like, 3 is secured from which the image is-reflected. The frame 2 preferably comprises a pair of central crossed members 4, 4
and the loud s eaker unit 5 is preferably secured to the fi section of the members 4, 4. That is, the unit is in the center of thescreen. The unit 5 is of usual and well-known construction comprising the usual electro- magnets 6, 6 which operate a vibrating member 7, and the usua speaker pin 8 is secured to the member 7.-
A. mica disc 9 is mounted at the back of the covering 3 and is secured to the member 4. The pin 8 extends through the disc 9 and through the covering 3, and a washer 10 are not clearly car- 9 so that it will vibrate with the pin 8. If desired, the entire back of the screen can also be enclosed by a fabric covering 11 which will further assist in the transmission of the sound outwardly towards the audience. It is evident that if desired a numberof speaker units 5 can be placed on the screen although I have here shown one at the center of the screen.
Having described my'invention, I claim: 1. In combination with a moving picture screen comprising a frame, a reflecting covering on said frame, a loud speaker unit secured to said frame on the back thereof, a disc mounted against the back of the covering, said disc being mounted on the frame, a pin extendin from the speaker unit through the disc and through the covering, and a washer secured to said pin against the outer face of the covering, and means securing the pintothedisc. 2. In combination with a, moving picture screen comprising a frame, cross members on the frame, a fibrous reflecting covering secured to said frame, aloud speaker unit secured to said cross members, said loud eaker um't being mounted .back of the reiigcting covering, a disc mounted on sald cross members and against the back of the covering, a in extending from the speaker unit throng the disc and through-the covering and a washer secured to-sa1d pin against the outer faceof the covering and means securing the pin to the disc.
' In testimony whereof, I aflix my si ature.
