Patented Dec. 9, 1930 V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EnE'nEnIc BAnMcanrnEa, or GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, ASsIoNoE TO THE FIRM. FABBIQUE DES nonrnns zEnrrn, succrssnnns DE FABRIQUES DES MONTRES ZENITH, GEORGES FAVRE-JACOT, 01 LE LOCLE, SWITZERLAND wA'rcHcASE Application filed. January 11, 1929, Serial No.
This invention relates to a watch and more particularly to that kind of watches wherein the movement is enclosed in a double covering. r
In the past it has been customary to carry a watch in the waistcoat pocket wherein it is held by means of a chain. However, it is now becoming quite common to carry the watch loosely in any convenient pocket together with other articles. In this case itis advantageous that in view of a good protection, the movement is enclosed in a double covering, that is in a case carrying the dial plate which can be made for instance of precious metal and which is itself enclosed in a box. But the watches which are constructed according to this principle have usually the disadvantage of requiring both hands to be opened.
The object of the invention is the provision of a Watch of this class which is designed to overcome the mentioned inconvenience by providing a box enclosing the ordinary watchca'se which carries the movement and.
the dial plate, this box comprising two parts of which one at least can pivot about the watchcase to uncover or conceal the dial.
The accompanying drawing illustrates by way of example one embodiment of the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate each one a plan view of this embodiment, Fig. 1 Showing the watch in open and Fig. '2 in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a section through IIIIII of Fig. 2. V
The movement 1 is enclosed in a casing 2 having the form of a sector of a circle and being provided with a removable back plate 3 and with a crystal 4. On the vertex 5 of the sector 2 are pivoted the two box halves 6 and 7 forming the cover parts for the central casing'2. On the circular periphery of the sector is provided a groove 8, wherein are engaged the two pins 9, each one carried by one of the halves 6 and 7 of the box. This groove terminates at each end by stops 10 against which the pins 9 strike when, as shown in Figure 1, the watch is opened.
The. box is held in closed position by the pressure exerted by the edge of one of the slightly resilient partsof the box upon the 331,792, and in Switzerland-December 1, 1928.
His well understood that the invention is,
not limited to what is represented in the drawing, particularly the watch could have another shape, elliptic for instance.
I claim: I I
1. A combination case comprising a central part and two cover parts, the central part having the shape of a sector of a circle and being adapted to receive an article to be enclosed in the case, and the two cover parts being in slidable engagement with the curved portion of the periphery of the central part and hingedly connected to the vertex of this part, so as to swing in opposite directions to expose or to cover said article.
2. A combination case comprising a central part and two cover. parts, the central part having the shape of a sector of a circle and being adapted to receive an article to be enclosed in the case, the three parts being hingedly connected at the vertex of the sector, a groove extending along the curved portion of the periphery of the central part, a pin carried by each of said cover parts and slidably engaging the groove, said cover parts being adapted to swing in opposite directions about the vertex of the central part while sliding along said groove to expose or to cover said article, and stop means at the ends of the groove to limit the swinging movement of the cover parts. I
Intestimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FREDERIG BAUMGARTNER.
