ATTACHMENTS FOR THE COCKS 0F STREET LAMPS.
No. 179,860. Patented Jul 1a. 1876,
WITN ESSES: 001? INVENTOR.
UNITED ATENI" Sermon.
ALFRED LOCKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO E. P. GLEASON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR THE COCKS OF STREET-LAMPS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,860., dated July 18, 1876 application filed t J une 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ALFRED LOCKER, (assignor to the E. P. GLEASON MANUFACTURING COMPANY,) of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful Attachment for the Cocks of Street-Lamps, by which. the lighting of the same, as well as their extinguishment, is facilitated; and that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view of my attachment applied to the cock of a street-lamp, the cock being shown open. Fig. 2 is a View of the same, the cock being shown closed. Fig. 3 is a front view of the attachment. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the same.
In the drawing, like parts of the invention are pointed out by the same letters of reference.
The nature of the present invention consists in the construction, as more fully hereinafter set forth, of a new and useful attachment for the cocks of street-lamps, the object of the invention being the production of an attachment for the cooks of street-lamps, capable of attachment to any form of key used in connection with the cock, by which the lighting or extinguishment of the lamp to which the attachment is applied is facilitated.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, 1 will describe the same.
A shows'the barrel of the cock, in which is inserted the core B, provided with the key 0. As shown in Fig. 1, the cock is open, and as shown in Fig. 2 the cock is closed, and in both these figures my attachment is shown attached to the cock of a street-lamp.
The attachment shown separately in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing consists of a plate of metal, D, the upper portions of which are continued in the process of manufacture, and form jaws E. One of these jaws is provided with an elongation or projecting plate, F, the object of which is fully hereinafter described, and both jaws are provided with openings in line with each other for the insertion of screws key will be received between the jaws E, and I then inserting the screws 0 in the screwthreaded openings in the jaws E.
When the gas is turned off the attachment will occupy the position shown in Fig. 2, the heavier end of the lever G projecting below the base of the barrel A of the cock.
My attach ment is more particularly intended for application to street lamps in cities, which are lighted bya party provided with a streetlight torch, as it is termed, and where rapid lighting of the lamp, as well as extinguishing of the same, is desirable.
With the attachment applied to the cock of a street-lamp, and occupying the position shown in Fig.2 of the drawing, the party wishing to light the lamp brings a properly-shaped fixture upon the torch to bear upon the heavier or longer end of the lever G, and raises the same until the projecting plate or stop F is turned from the horizontal, or nearly horizontal, position it occupies, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, into the vertical, or nearly vertical, position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and into contact with the barrel A of the cock. By this movement the opening in the core B of the cock is brought into line with the burner H, and the gas is supplied to the same. In this position the torch may be used to light the burner by bringing it over or alongside of the gas supplied to the same.
When the extinguishment of the lamp is necessary the operation above described is re versed, the fixture upon the torch being brought to bear upon the shorter or lighter end of the lever G, and the same is raised, the opposite end of the lever Gr being depressed. The fact that this end is made heavier than the opposite end enables it (so to speak) to assist in the operation of extinguishing the lamp, and, at the same time, when the cock is shut or closed, prevents, to a certain extent, the opening of the same from any sudden jarring or concussion, or except in the proper way and at the proper time.
The attachment as made can be produced at a low cost, and from its peculiar construction can he applied to any form of cock, thusdispensing with the necessity of changing the cooks of street-lamps to adapt them to a streetlighting torch, which, where many lamps are employed, would form a large item of expense, in addition to the time consumed in so doing.
While in the drawing I have shown a lever, G, constructed with one end made heavier and longer than the opposite end, I do not wish to be understood as intending to confine myself to such form of lever, as I am well aware that otherforms of lever may be employed to opcrate-the cock of a street-lamp. Thus a rightangled form of lever, or a lever consisting of a flat bar or plate of metal, may be combined with my attachment without changing the nature of my'invention.
In the present application I show and describe a form of lever which I consider best for the purpose,
Having now set forth my invention, What I claim as new is The attachment for cocks of street-lamps, consisting of the plate D, provided with the jaws E, elongation or stop F, and lever Gr, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth,
ALFRED LOCKER. \Vitnesses:
E. P. GLEASON, E. F. GENNERT.
