p With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and construction-of the various parts of my improved device as described in the specification, claimed inmy claims and shown in the accompanying'drawings, injwhich:

W J I have shown a socket block 1 having a screw-threaded shank Qadapted for engagement with power transmitting mechanism (not shown). In the center of the blockwl is i cut a circular opening 4: adapted to receive in close" fit the end of the broach 3. Intermediate the-ends of the block 1 and on the opposite sides thereof, are cutopenings 5 adapted to receive plugs 6. These openings 5 eX- tend into the central opening 4 and together 7375 form a continuous opening running through the block at right angles to the opening 4..
The openings 5 are formed with recesses 7 to receive corresponding shoulders on the plugs 6. The plugs 6 are of sufficient length so that when they are inserted in the openings 5 with their outer ends flush with the surface of the block 1, their inner ends extend into the opening 4:. Those surfaces 9 of the inner ends of plugs 6 which face the inner end of opening 4; are cut in so that the surfaces 9 incline from the lower edges of plugs 6 toward the outer end of opening 4. Positioned in the sides of the block 1 carrying the openings 5 are screw studs 10 which serve, in connection with the washers 11, to secure to the block 1 the spring 1926. serial Nb. 115,377. r l 5;"

The endof the broach 3 is inserted in opening 4'so that the tapered surfaces 13 will contact with the edges of plugs 6 and Will iT raise the plugs 6, by cam action in theopening5 and so cause the ends of plugs 6 to slide over the surfaces of the broach 3 and fall into the slots '14 which are cut into those sides of broach 3 which correspond: with the so t apered'surfaces13. the plugs 6 will drop into the slots ll and will be held in those slots by the action of the. springs 12. The broach will then, be secured in the block 1 ready for use. I The broach 3 may be quicklyand easily removed from the 'block'l' by giving the broach a quarter turn which causes the edgesof the bottoms of the slots 14 to bear against the ends of the plugs 50 6 and 'forcethe plugs 6, by cam action, outward through the openings 5. The inner ends of plugs 6,,whenthe full quarter turn a of the broach 3 has been made, will be held flush with the sides of the opening 4: by the unslotted portion of the broach 3, and so permit the" broach to be withdrawn from the block. I have, by cutting the slots 14 in those sidesof the broach 3 corresponding to the tapered surfaces 13, eliminated the necessity of turning the breach in the opening 4 to permit the plugs 6 to drop into the slots 14 as when the broach is inserted in the opening 4 the tapered surfaces 13 contact with the ends of the plugs 6 and force them outwardly through the openi'ngsb until the inner ends of plugs 6 are clear of the opening 4 which permits the breach to be pushed into opening 4 until the slots 14 are directly under the openings 5 and in place to receive the plugs 6.. v I
It is'thus apparent that I have provided a broach puller or adapter in which broaches may be quickly and easily removed and replaced with mini-mum loss of time which is very important in production work.
It will be obvious that various changes may be made in the arrangement, combination and construction of the various parts of my improved device without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it is my intention to. cover by my claims such changes as mayfbe reasonably included within the scope thereof. hat I claim is: 1. In combination, a broach having a shank tapered on opposite sides of its end and transverse slots in those sides of the shank corresponding with the'tapers on the end there of, said slots having their sides nearestthe tapered end diagonally cutv to form an acute angle with the bottoms of said slots, and a broach holder comprising a block having an axial recess in one end thereof adapted to fit said broach shank, and having transverse openings in opposite sides thereof leading said shank and transverse openings leading into said central opening, plugs movable in said transverse openings having forwardly inclined rear faces adapted to engage the forwardly inclined rear walls of the slots in said shank, whereby the pull on said shank tends to draw said inclined faces and walls into deeper engagement.
3. In combination, a breach having a shank having transverse slots in opposite sides thereof, forwardly inclined rear walls for said slots, and a holder having a central longitudinal opening therein adapted to receive said shank and transverse openings leading into said central opening, plugs movably secured in'said transverse openings and having forwardly inclined rear faces adapted to engage the forwardly inclined rear walls of the slots in said shank,'said plugs being of less breadth than the width of said slots whereby said inclined faces may be disengaged by a rotary movement of the shank alone.
-4 A device of the class described, for cooperation with a tool shank provided with slots presenting hook portions, comprising a block having an opening in the longitudinal center thereof and having openings in the sides thereof extending transversely through said longitudinal opening and each provided with a recess at an edge thereof, plugs movable in said side openings and extendable into said longitudinal opening for engaging and securing a tool shank therein, said plugs each having a shoulder which is adapted to fit in a mentioned recess provided atv an edge of the corresponding openings, and said plugs having surfaces adjacent their. inner ends so 1 diagonally cut to form an acute angle with the adjacent surface of said longitudinal opening and to cooperate with said hook portion, springs mounted, upon said block and positioned to bear upon the outer ends of said plugs for holding the same in said openings, and a. shank secured to said block for engagement with power transmitting mechanism.
