Description
1931. o. E. MAGNUSON 1,835,660
DOOR LATCH Fild May 28, 1950 0- E. M/76/VZ/50/V gwwntoz Patented Dec. 8, 1931 "UNITED STATES OSCAR E1. IVLAGNUSON, or navmvronr, IOWA noon Lam Application filed May 28,
My present invention pertains to thattype of devices which are used more particularly in connection with house doors to permit same to be opened a short distance and which can 3 be adjusted to permit the door to open fully and without obstruction or to latch the door in closed position. The present invention is an improvement upon the construction illustrated in my Patent No. 1,754,958 dated April Among the objects of this invention are to provide an improved means of the character stated; to provide a device of the character indicated which will be economical to manufacture and efiicient in service; to provide a device of the class described which is so constructed that persons outside the door can not actuate the device so as to permit the door to be opened when the latch is in a position to prevent such operation; to provide a device of the character indicated, such that the same may be used to latch the door in closed or partly closed position or may be adjusted to permit thedoor to be opened; and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will hereafter appear and as inherent in the construction disclosed herein; My invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and, while I have shown therein what is now considered the preferred embodiment of my device, together with a modification thereof, I
. desire this disclosure to be understood as illustrative only and not to be construed in a limiting sense.
In the drawings annexed hereto and forming a part hereof, Fig. 1 is a plan view of one form of this device, showing the same adm justed to a position such that it latches the door in completely closed position; Fig. 2 is a similar plan view showing the parts adjusted to permit the door to be opened slightly; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts adjusted to permit the door to open freely;
1930.1 F'seria No. 456,733.
F ig. 4'isa view similar toFig. 1 of a modified form of construction Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of the device shown in Fig. 4, with a portion of theupper plate broken away to more clearly expose the construction of the 50 latching dog; Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 but with the latching dog adjusted to position such that the door may be opened freely, as illustrated in Fig. 3. o
The construction will now be described in greater detail in connection with the drawings, In these drawings the door is designated by the .numeral 1 and its casing by the numeral 2. A wear-plate 3 is secured adjacent theswinging edge of the door 1 andhas two functions, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5.- In Figs. 1 and 4, it is illustrated as a bumper plate designed to strike'against the latching dog 4 when the latter is in latching position, as illustrated inthese two figures. With the parts in the position illustrated in these two figures, theplate 3. also has the additional function of tending to prevent the latch 4-f-rom swinging outwardly, if bumped by the door 1, in-an attempt to open same. The other purpose of the plate 3 is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 in which the hook 5 is shown as engaged by the hook 6 of. the dog 4 to assist in-holding the parts together when the dog is arranged in the position for permitting partial opening of the door.
The dog 4 is-illustrated as being provided with a pivot pin 7 which extends through corresponding slots in the upper and lower plates designated in general by the numerals 1O and10a These slots have two arms 8 and 9 arranged at a substantial angle to each other. In orderto move the dog 4 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to either ofthe positions shownv in F igsyl and 2, it is necessary to'turn the same somewhat on its pivot 7 so as to permit the projection 11 .to pass the obstruction 12 when the pivot. pin 7 slides longitudinally of the slots 8. WVhen this pin has reached the angle/between the parts 8 and 9 of these slots, the pin 7 may be moved longitudinally along the portion 9 of the slot and into the end thereof as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. When arranged in this way, it is possible to turn the dog 4 into either the position shown in Fig. 1 or that shown in Fig. 2. A. pair of notches 13 and 14 are provided for entrance of the projection 12, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. As illustrated in the various figures, the device is provided with suitable flanges 15 whereby it may be secured to the casing by suitable screws.
The device shown in-Figs.-4, .5 and 6 is similar to that shown in Figs. 1, 2 3 but varies in certain minor details. For example, theslot 16 is a straight or substantially straight slot with a slight enlargement at one end, as illustrated at 17. While the notches 13a and 14a are similar to the notches 13 and 14, they differ slightlyin form. 'Also, the projection 12a vdi'llers slightly from the i projection 12 but it still has-the same functions as that projection. A cam 18 is pro? vided on that partof the dog through which the pivot pin 7 passes, saidca n cooperating with the projection 1-9 in rendering it necesother position to necessitate closing of the door before the dog can be moved.
n e t m ny wh of lafli my Signature- MAGN E sary to turn the dog 4 upon its pivot when passing from the position shown in Fig. 6 to either of the positions shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The parts 12', 12a and 19 are held in assembled relation with respect to the side plates of the latching device by means of screws or rivets 20 or any other suitable securing means.
It will of course be understood thatlthe specific description and other disclosure herein may be departed from without departing from the spirit of my invention as expressed in the following claims.
Having now described my invention, I claim V 1. In a door latch, a body member comprising a pair of flanged side members having a spacing block bQtWBGI1.tl1GII1,-Sfl,ld side members being slotted for the reception of a pin,
a dog arrangedrbetween the side members and provided with a pin extending through said slots, said dog being. mostly exposed outside of the body member and having a hook for engagement with a door, said dog having a pair of notches tocooperate with thespacmg member in permitting such movements of the dog. V
'2. In a structure of the character described, a wear-plate to be attached to adoor, a latching member to be attached to a door casing adjacent the door and in a position to contact with the wear-plate in one position of ad.- -justment of the'latching member, said latching member comprising a hollow body having a pair of substantially parallel side walls and a dog mounted between said side walls for sliding and pivotal motion between the same, means connecting the dog to the body :member for sliding movement therein, said
