This invention relates to an improved type of tube for containing shaving cream, or the like, and has for its object the production of a tube adapted for use with a non-lathering shavingcream, the cream being spread over the face directly from the end of the tube without the use of a shaving brush.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description and accom- 0 panying drawings in which,

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen 5 that the tube consistsof a cylindrical body portion 1 and a head 2 formed integrally therewith.

As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the head is of saucer-like shape, the central portion being 0 flat'and the outer edges being curved to form a rounded junction with the side walls of the tube. The amount of curvature of the outer edges may be varied within rather wide limits. In some instances, for example, it has been found desirable to curve the outer edges sulficiently to leave the flat portion only about half the diameter of the tube.

The central flattened portion of the tube may contain anumber of corrugations or protrusions 3 which serve to roughen the surface to facilitate spreading the. cream over the face. These protrusions may be stamped into the head portion of the material before the tube is pressed into final form. If desired, the fiat surface of the head may be roughened in another manner, as shown in Fig. 3. In this form, the face of the head is painted with a mixture of cork-dust and cellulose lacquer, as shown at 4; or, if desired,

1 a layer of roughened rubber may be cemented on the face of the head instead of using the layer of painted cork-dust.

As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the head con tains an outlet orifice 5 through which the cream is squeezed from the tube onto the face of the head. The orifice is cut out of the metal piece 12 which forms a portion of the body of the head lying wholly within the plane of the spreading surface. It is internally threaded and is sealed by the externally threaded screw plug 6, as shown. f/hen the plug is screwed into the outlet a small amount of paste is extruded from the crevices of the threads and tends to form a self-sealing jointwith the shoulder of the plug. The surface of the head immediately around the outlet orifice which contacts with the shoulder of the lug 6 is left smooth to form a flush contact.

In the form shown in Figs. 5 to 8, the outlet orifice is in the form of a keyhole slot '1'. The slot is formed in a portion of the metal 8 forming the head 2, and, as in the form first described, is entirely within the spreading surface of the head. The metal portion 8, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7, has a keyhole slot which divides it into oppositely disposed semi-cylindrical pieces having portions of their end surfaces cut to form inclined faces 9. The inclined faces 9 co-operate with the 39 projections 10 of the sealing plug 11. These projections have inclined faces formed to contact with the faces 9 so that when the plug is inserted in the slot and rotated slightly a wedging action is produced which serves to grip the plug securely in place.

The form of the head makes it particular 1y well adapted for spreading the cream over the face. The plug is removed, the tube squeezed slightly to extrude a strip of cream onto the roughened face of the head and is then spread over the face by merely rubbing with the tube, much as in the manner of spreading with a brush, the curved edge portions of the head eliminating any sharp edges over which the cream might be pushed and wasted. After being used, the plug is inserted to seal the outlet and any remaining portion of the cream may be readily rinsed 7'3 from the face of the head or the sides of the lug.

While the tube is shown collapsible, permitting the cream to be expressed therefrom the actual end Wall of a container and not any device which may be attached to the con-, tamer to provide a roughened surface spaced from the actual end Wall of the container; Thus, devices which may be screw-threaded into the discharge openings of containers to' provide spreading surfaces spaced from the end Walls of the'containers are not included in the term end Wall as it is employed in the appended claims.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, butthe appended claims should be construed as broadly as per missible, in view of the prior art. r 1

What I regard as new, and desiretosecure by Letters Patent, is: I

1. A container for shaving cream comprising a tube having one end closed With a corrugated head, an outlet for the creambeing'locatedin the surface ofsaid head, and

means for sealing said outlet, said sealing means being secured in said headin such manner that upon its'removal, a substantially flat surface is available for spreading of the cream. 7 v

2. A shaving cream tube for expressing cream and having an end-Wall of substantlally the same diameter as the container and merging by means of, rounded corners With the cylindrical Walls of the casing, said end roughened to provide a spreading surface,

and a closure member for the aperturein said end-Wall.

4. A tube of the character described com prising a side-Wall; and anapertured metallic end-Wall formed integral therewith,

the metal of said Wall being roughened on the outer side to form a spreading surface.

5; A collapsibletube having a side Wall and an end Wall, said end Wall being substantially equal in area to the cross-sectional area of the tube, and being of the same shape as the body of the 'tube, said end Wall having 1 a substantially fiat central portion, said fiat portion being roughened on its outer surface and being apertured.

6. A collapsible tube having a side Wall and an end Wall, said end Wall being substantially equal in area to the cross-sectional area of the tube, and being of the same shape asthe body of the tube, said end Wall having asubstantially flat central portion, said flat portion being coated to provide a roughened surface.
