This invention relates to cleaning apparatus, and in particular to apparatus for dusting or cleansing public places such as public seats or the seats of water closets. It
is of great importance that the cleansing means used for such purposes shall itself be clean before using, and should if possible be disinfected, and the object of the present invention is the construction of such as apparatus.
The invention is characterized by a strip of dusting or cleansing material which is stretched across the face of a casing or frame by means of rollers carried within the frame, and operated from without by any convenient means such as knobs or levers, and the arrangement is such that byturning the appro priate knob or *lever, a fresh portion of the dusting or cleansing material may be brought into position on the operating face of the casing or frame. An enclosure within the casing or frame is adapted to contain any convenient kind of disinfectant by which the whole apparatus may be disinfected.
The invention may be more clearly understood by referring to the attached drawings in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the apparatus in open position.

Within the casing are set two hollow spindles 8, one spindle having in'each end a small spring operated catch 6 which, when the spindle is in place engages a corresponding recess 6" in the wall of'the casing or frame. 7
Within the other spindle and preferably screwed into its closed end e is a rod terminating in a knob k projecting on the outside of the casing, and adapted for turning the spindle. If desired both spindles may be constructed in this way and be fitted with a knob.
A roll of paper or other convenient material 1" carried on a bobbin ;0 is fixed on one of the spindles and thence passes out through slots 15, t, in the casing across the outer face of the same and through the corresponding slot on to the bobbin carried by the other spindle. By turning the appropriate knob the paper or other material may be traversed as desired across the outer face so as to expose to use a clean surface as often as may be desired.
The cleansing material may be marked at intervals in any convenient way to indicate the quantity used or still available. Springs 1?. on the lid a bear upon the roll of material, and exercise suficient pressure thereon to assure that the strip of material shall remain taut across the face of the casing.
The bobbin p is held in operative relation to the spindle by a peg s which projects on both sides thereof and engages recesses s in the end of the bobbin, see Fig. 5.
Fixed to the inner sides of the casing and approximately midway between the two spindles is a small box or enclosure 6 which is adapted to be filled with any convenient disinfectant for the purpose of'disinfecting the whole apparatus, and in particular the cleansing material, both before and after use.
The casing may be of any convenient shape, but its operating face is preferably as shown in Fig. 2. This face may be padded to any desired extent and may be straight or curved as may be convenient.
It should be understood that the apparatus as herein described is a preferred form, but that it may be varied considerably within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed I declare that what I claim is 1. A cleaning device of the character described comprising a casing, rolls therein, a strip of cleanin material extending across the lower face of the casing and wound at its ends on said rolls whereby different portions thereof are adapted to be exposed for use by unwinding the strip from one roll onto the other, a cover for the top of the casing,
and means carried by the cover for engagement with the strip to hold taut the portion of the same which extends across the lower face of the casing.
2. A cleaning device as set forth in claim ing the device and the means carried by the cover for engagement with the strip comprise resilient elements.
