Description

P. w. SULLIVAN 1,855,697 I Doon LATCH Filed April 22,71929 Patented Apr. 26, 1932 UNITED sTATEs .PATENT PERRY' W. SULLIVAN, OF SOUTH BEND, IN DIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE STUDEAKER PORATION, F SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF'NEW JERSEY 'y v Application led .April 22,
This invention relates to door latch operating handles and particularly to means whereby when the lock mechanism forming a part of the handle is moved to a predetermined 6l position rotation of the handle will not per- 154 moved to one position rotation of the handle will permit the opening of the door and when the cylindrical member is moved to another position the rotation of the handle will not permit the opening of the door.
Another object is to provide a latch operating spindle rotatably mounted in the hollow shell forming a part of the operating handle, the spindle having a slot in its inner end adapted to receive a projection formed on an end of the key-controlled cylindrical member rotatably mounted in the hollow shell of the operating handle whereby the rotation of the handle will permit the openling of the door of which the latch mechanism forms a part. l
A further object is to provide a rotatable latch operating handle having a hollow shell extending into the door in which is rotatably mounted a key-controlled cylindrical member having a projection at the inner end thereof detachably engageable in a slot formed in a latch operating spindle rotatably1 mounted in the hollow slr ell forming a part of the operating handle, the rotatable cylindrical member being provided with a pin riding in a slot formed in a cylindrical sleeve seated in the latch operating handle whereby the projection on the end thereof is guided into the slot formed in the latch opera ting spindle.
The above being @Tong the objects of the present invention the same consists of certain features and combination ot parts to be hereinafter described and then claimed, having the above and other objects in view.
In the accompanying drawings which il- -DooR 'LATCH 1929. Serial No. 357,058.
lustrate a suitable embodiment of my ypresent invention,
Figure 1 isa longitudinal ,sectional view showing the latch operating handle and the lock mechanism therefor, the lock mechaf nism being shown in position whereby rotation of the handle will not operate the latch mechanism, certain parts of the device being shown in full lines and other parts broken away t'o more clearly show the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal. section similar to Figure 1, showing the lock mechanism in operative position whereby rotationf of the handle will operate the latch mechanism to open the door. y
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken substantially on theline 3 3 of Figure 2. n
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 1f-4: of Figure 2, showing the means to prevent lono'itudinal movement of the latch operating spindle relative to the door operating` handle.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure is fragmentary perspective View, showing the slotl formed in the end of the latch operating spindle.
Referring in detail to the drawings in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, I have shown for the purpose of illustration a section of a motor vehicle door comprising an edge face member 1 having its front edge covered with a sheet metal plate 2. The latch mechanism 3, a portion only of which is shown in- Figure 1, is suitably secured to the rear face of the door structure.
The latch mechanism mayv be of any de-V sired type and is actuated by means of the exterior handle 4 having a shank 5 provided with an opening G extending therethrough terminating in an enlarged opening 7 through the handle portion 4 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The shank 5 of the handle 4 is inserted through an opening 8 in the face plate 2 and is retained against longitudinal movementv relative to the door bymeans of the nut 9 threaded on theshank 5.
l? March'29,` 1929, in which-application the construction and operation of the 'escutcheon illustrate An escutcheon member comprising the hollow shells 10 and 10 surrounds the shank 5 exteriorly of the face late 2, the members 10 and 10 being retained in operative position by the spring 11. The escutcheon member for securing the handle 4 against longitudi--- nal movement relative to the door forms no part of mg' present invention, the same being ,1n my copending application-for Letters Patent, Serial No. 350,895, led
member are clearly illustrated, so that a further description of the same in this present case is believed to be unnecessary.
The latch 3 is operatedI by the spindle-:12. terminating at one end in7 vanvenlarged cy-- 7 lindrical portion 13 adapted to be rotatably tudinal movement of the spindlev12 re a.-
received 1nl the opening 6 formed inthe shank 5. The' end 13 o the spindle 12 is provided with a vrecess 13 in which is seated..
a` pin 14 secured in the shank 5 as is clearly shown in Figures 1 to 4to prevent lon itive to the door operating handle 4. In the inner end' of the member 13 is formed a slot 15, the edges of the slot being rounded at 16 as is clearly shown-in Figure 6 for a pur members 18 and 17, the plungers 19 being moved into the positions shown in Fi res 1 and 2 by means of the key 22. The ollow sleeve 17 has formed therein a slot 23 adapted to receive and guide the pin 24 secured on the cylindrical lock member 18 for longitudinalmovin the member 18 from the position l sliown inigure 1 to Figure 2, and vice versa.
The lock member 18 is provided withV a projection 25 at its inner end adapted to be received in the slot 15 formed in the end 13 of the spindle 12. v
Referring to Figure 1, the key 22 may be inserted in the slot formed in the lock member 18 to move the lock plungers 19 out of engagement with the hollow shell 17 whereupon the lock member 18 may be rotated and in so doing Athe pin 24 is moved in the slot 23 formed in the member 17 which causes the member 18 to move longitudinally relative to the handle 4 whereby the projection 25 is caused to engage in the slot 15 formed in the member 12. As previously stated the edges of the slot 15 are rounded oil at 16 to permit easy engagement of the projection 25 therein. When the lock member 18 has been rotated by the key 22 in the manner just previously described the same will assume the position shown in Figure 2. In this position the lock lungers 19 will engage in the sleeve 17 where yy the-handle 4, sleeve 17 and rotatable lockmember 18 aresecured together and rotation of the handle 4 will cause rotation of the spindle 12 to thuso rate the latch 3 to ermit the opening'of e doorf f .f-v
eferring to Figure 2 the key 22 may then be inserted in the slotriormed in the cylin-v drical lock member 18 which will move they plungers 19 from'the position shown wherev 'upon rotation of the keyv22 will withdraw s i the projection'25 on thev member 18 from the e slot 15 formed in the member 18, the lockV member 18 being guided to its reseated posi- 1 tion by the pin 24 riding inthe slot 23 so that z the cylindrlcal lock member 18 will assume fthe position shown in Figu p re 1. When in this position the projection 25is diseng the slot 15 so that. rotation of the, andle 4 will not rotate the spindle 11 to affect the latch mechanism 3. In other words, when the mechanism is shown as in Figure 1, the han- 4dle4 may be rotated at will without operat- 1; ing to nnlatch the door to permit opening the. i `same by unauthorized persons. Y 'It will thus be seen that I have provided a, lsimple and eicient lock structure in a door l .I
operating handle effective to nnlatch the door 1 when in one position and which will prevent formal changes can be made therein without departing from the-spirit and substance of my invention the scope of which is commensurate with the appended claims.
What I claim is: l
1. In combination with a door structure having an opening in the side face thereof and a latch mechanism mounted thereon, a rotatable latch operating handle having a hollow shank extending into said opening, a latch operating spindle having one end mounted in said shank and its op osite end engageable with said latch mechanism, a keycontrolled lock member mounted in said handle, and means for rotatably and slidably moving said lock member into engagement with said spindle whereby rotation of said handle will permit operation of said latch mechanism.
2. In combination with a door structure having an opening in the side face thereof and a latch mechanism mountedthereon, a rotatable latch operating handle having a hollow shank extendinginto said opening, a latch operating spindle having a slot formed in its inner end face ounted in said hollowshank, a keyy'contro ed cylindrical member having a projection extending from its inner end face mounted in said handle, a sleeve having a slot therein surrounding said key-controlled cylindrical member, a pin exthe unlatching of the door when in another 'I tendin from the cylindrical member riding in sai slot, and means permitting said pin to slidably move in the slot formed in said sleeve whereby said key-controlled cylindri- 5 cal member is caused to move longitudinally relative to said handle and said projection l thereon is caused to engage in the slot formed in said spindle whereupon rotation of said handle willcause operation of said latch mechanism.
3. In combination with a door structure having an opening in the side face thereof and a latch mechanism mounted thereon, a rotatable latch operating handle having 'a portion extending into said opening` a latch operating spindle operatively engaging with tsaid handle, a hollow sleeve having a slot formed therein positioned in said handle, and a key-controlled lock member having a projection thereon guided by said slot movable to engage said latch operating spindle to cause operation of said latch mechanism.
4. In combination with a door structure having an opening in the side face thereof and a latch mechanism mounted thereon, a rotatable latch operating handle extending into said opening, a latch operating spindle operatively engageable with said handle, a
, hollow sleeve having a slot therein mounted in said handle, a lock member having a projection on the side face thereof engageable in said slot. and means permitting said lock member to be rotated relative to said handle whereby7 said pin is caused to move in said slot and cause said lock member to engage with said spindle whereupon rotation of said handle will cause operation of said latch mechanism.
Signed by me at South Bend, Indiana this 18th day of April, 1929.
