As shown, A is the t'alse barrel preferably formed 'trom a sheet .metal blank and ot' subs antially cylindrical 'lorm from end to end. l, a cylindrical guide for the pump handle which also preferably formed from a sheet metal blanl; ol cylindrical form trom end to end arranged beneath the false barrel parallel thereto. Secured within the rear portion ol' the member B is a men'lber Cl Yformed up 'from a sheet n'ietal blank being provided with a yinglrticni C `which lits Within the member B and spot welded or otherwise secured thereto and upwardly extending spaced flange portions G2. At their forward ends these flanges are llfashioned to telescopically engage the barrel. A and to form a spring abutment. The member A also provided with a loop or bearing A which is telescopically engaged. by the forward end portion of the member B, thereby connecting the members A and D and holding the same in parallelism. The member A on its lower side is slotted to receive lthe flanges C2 and is further provided with depending flanges A on opposite sides oi? the slot and having the notch A2 therein. `Vithin the barrel A there is secured an abutment A which forms a bearing for the air compression cylinder D. This cylinder is telescopically engaged with the barrel A and is slidable therein. It is further provided With a depending flange D preferably attached to a collar surrounding the cylinder and soldered or otherwise secured thereto. The flange D projects downward through the slot in the upper side of the member B- l/Vitliin the barrel D is a piston or plunger E provided With the usual for- 'Wardly extending air tube E which passes through a central aperture in the abutment AP' and the rearwardly extending shank E2 Yhaving a groove E3 near its rear end and the tapering head Et. The spring F is sleeved about the shank E2 within the cylinder D and at its rear end engages an abutment collar F which bears against the member C. G is a tubular handle sleeved upon the member B and having a rearwardly extending apertured tlangc G tor engaging a tongue D2 on the ilange D. Thus to assemble the parts as thus far described the plunger' E is placed Within the cylinder D, the spring F is sleeved upon the plunger shanl; E2 and the abutment collar F is engaged with the rear end of the spring. These parts are then telescopically engaged with the barrel A after which the member B is assembled by telescopically engaging the member C with the barrel an d cngaging the forward end oit' the member B with the loop or bearing A4. At the same time the tongue D2 is engaged with the slotted flange Gr of the handle Gr so that when said handle is slid rearward upon the member B it Will carry with it the cylinder D and plunger E compressing the spring F against the collar F and abutment C3.
The gun is provided With a stock member H and a frame member I, the latter being formed of sheet metal which in cross section is an elongated loop adapted to receive the members A and B. The sear J is mounted between the flanges C2 and is secured to a pivot- J passing through said flanges. The trigger K is mounted upon a pivot K within the frame I and is so positioned that when the parts are assembled it will be in operative relation to the sear. rIhe members are then held in this position by a pin or bolt L which passes through the frame through the notches A2 in the flanges A and a registering aporture in the flanges C2.
Vith the construction as thus far described it will be understood that by drawing rearwardly on the handle G it will through the engagement of the tongue D2 with the iiange G move the cylinder D rearward compressing the spring F against the collar Il". rl`his movement also carries with it the plunger and its shank E2. rThis will cause the sear J to engage with the notch E3 in the plunger shank to hold the plunger from return movement when the handle G is again moved'forward. It is, however, desirable to lock the trigger during this operation as otherwise the Vsear might be disengaged accidentally and the spring released before the completion of the forward movementof the handle. Such a locking mechanism is forined'by a member M which is arranged within the hollow member B and is slidable longitudinally thereof. rlhe member M is preferably formed of a metal bar having down-turned flanges M at its opposite ends and a slot M2 in its forward portion which is engaged by the tongue D2. Beneath the bar M is a spring latch bar N attached thereto and having at its forward end a portion N for engaging the tongue D2. rlhe arrangement is such that when the handle G is drawn rearward upon the member B the tongue D2 engaging a portion N of the latch barN will move thebar M rearwardly i until itextends beneath a finger K2 on the trigger K and further rearward movement will arrest it. The handle G is permitted 'to continue its rearward movement by disengaging the tongue D2 from the spring latch bar N thereby permitting the carrying back of the cylinder and plunger to engage the plunger shank with the sear. During the forward movement of the handle G the bar M remains'in position to lock the trigger until at the completion of this movement the tongue D2 reaching the end of the slot M2 will force the bar M forward withdrawing it from engagement with the finger K2.
The gun as above described is one which simulates the appearance of a powder pur-.io
gun and is also a construction which issimple to manufacture and is easily operated. The fact that the handle G directly engages the tongue D2 on the cylinder dispenses with the necessity for any complex intervening lever mechanism. On thel other hand, as the direction of movementl of the handle is parallel with the axis of the barrel the cylinder may be moved backward and the spring compressed without too great labor on the part of the operator.
Another important feature of my construction is that the stock and barrel of the gun can be readily detached for convenience in assembly and in shipment. It will be noted that the members A and Bare held in assembled relation to each other and to the frame of the gun by the shank bolt or pin L. Therefore by removing this bolt the barrel may be withdrawn from the frame and arranged in the position` shown in Figure 14 which is convenient for packing and shipment.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a spring actuated plunger within said barrel, a tubular guide arranged beneath and parallel to said barrel, a handle sleeved upon said guide and adapted to compress said spring during its rearward movement, a hollow frame for receiving the rear end prtion of said barrel and guide, a sear and trigger mounted in said frame in coopera-tive relation to said plunger and means for securing said barrel and guide in said frame permitting attachment and detachment thereof without disturbance of said sear and trigger.
2. In a gun, the combination with a barrel and a spring actuated plunger therein, of a tubular guide arranged beneath and parallel to said barrel, a handle sleeved upon said guide and adapted to compress said spring during its rearward movement, a member secured to said guide telescopically engaging the rear end of said barrel and forming a spring abutment, a sear mounted in said member, a hollow frame for receiving the rear end portions of said, barrel and guide and secured thereto and a trigger within said frame for releasing said sear.
3. Ina gun, the combination with a barrel, of a spring, actuated plunger therein, a tubular guide arranged beneath and parallel to said barrel, a handle sleeved upon said guide and adapted during itsrearward movement thereon. to compress said spring, a member onsaid guide telescopically engaging the rear end of said barrel and forming a spring abut ment, a bearing on said barrel for telescopically receiving the forward end of said guide, a hollow frame for receiving said barrel and guide and means for coupling the samevtogether. f
4.
