The present invention relates to improvements in selecting mechanisms. More part-icularly the invention relates to improvements in selecting mechanisms, especially adapted for the operationof printing telegraph mechanisms.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a light compact arrangement of selecting and control mechanisms, adapted for printing telegraphs in which the number of parts involved is small, and thew parts are adapted for economical manufacture.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel selecting and printing mechanisms for printing telegraphs adaptable for use either in tape or page printing mechanisms whereby the same parts may be utilized in the manufacture of both types of printers, reducing the manufacturing cost thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a light weight selecting and printing mechanism which is adapted to be moved across a sheet ofv paper, eliminatingthe necessity for moving the paper for page printing, and also is adapted to be used as a stationary unitwhen it is desired to move the paper for spacing purposes.
Ay furtherobject of the invention is to provide novel selecting mechanisms adapted for operation either by a single magnet or by a plurality of selector magnets.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism in which the operation of the functions is entirely separated from the printing mechanisms whereby the functions may be operated by power mechanism independently of the printing mechanism, permitting the utilization of relatively small powers and light weight parts for the selecting and printing operations a'nd substantially heavier powers and parts to operate the function or control mechanisms.
Further objects of the invention are such as Will appear to one skilled in the art from the detailed description of the preferred embodiments hereinafter set forth, and as are defined by the terms of the appended claims.

Type printing mechanisms being Well known in the art, only so much of the well known mechanisms to be utilized in connection with the present invention will be described as will be essential to enable those skilled in the art to understand the present invention fully. In the preferred embodiment, my invention comprises setting vanes 1 to 5 inclusive which are provided at their ends with the vane pivots journaled in suitable bearings carried by a supporting frame of any suitable type (not shown). Vanes 1 to 5 are Iprovided with the actuating extensions 7 igure 2) which are operated by control or vane setting members 8. The setting ,members 8 are operated by a mechanism, not shown, to tilt the vanes 1 to 5 about their pivots 6 to positions slightly inclined with the vertical, in accordance with code combinations of received marking or spacing conditions. Various mechanisms of a type suitable to actuate members 8 are well known in the art and form no part of the present invention. This mechanism may, for example, be of the multiple magnet type shown in U. S.
patent to Pfannenstiehl #1,374,606 issued-V 34. Shaft 33 spacing plate -18 which is yprovided withv spaced radial guide slots 19 for selector latches 20. A latch 20 is provided for each selective operation to be performed under control of the disks 10 to 14. Latches 2O at their lower ends are pivotally supportedon ring 21 and are spaced by projections 22 of the comb plate 23 upon which the pivot'ring 21 is mounted. Secured to extensions 24 of latches 2O are the lower ends of helical springs 25 which at their upper ends are secured to pins 26 of guide plate 18. Springs 25 tend to urge latches 20 inward about their pivots into engagement with the peripherles of permutation disks 10 to 14 inclusive. Formed integrally with each of the latches 20 are the restoring projections 27 which extend over the circular edge of latch lifting plate 28, to which the type wheel stop 28 is secured for a purpose which will more fully hereinafter appear. Plate 28 is guided for vertical reciprocation on studs 15 and secured to this plate by means of pin 29 is a lifting roller 30 which rides on the periphery of a lifting cam 31. Lifting cam 31 is formed integrally on a sleeve 32 whichis slidably keyed to and movable on printer `main shaft 33 and has formed integrally therewith a spacing worm is driven intermittently through a suitable single revolution clutch (not shown) from a continuously operating drive motor, the clutch being released in well known manner by the selecting mechanism upon the receipt of the last selecting condition of each code combination. Sleeve 32 together with the lifting cam 31 and spacing worm 34 are mounted between the bearing extensions 35 of plate 16, and shaft 33 is slidably journaled in the bearing extensions 35. Worm 34 meshes with teeth 36 of the spacing rack 37 which is supported on the outer ends of rack shifting arms 38. Rack shifting arms 38 are supported on shaft 39 which is pivotally supported on the main frame work of the mechanism (not shown) Secured in one of the arms 38 is a pin 40 to which the upper end of a spring 41 is secured. The lower end y of the spring 41 is secured to the frame work in suitable manner and the spring 41 normally holds the teeth of rack 37 in engagement with the spacing worm 34. Pivotally secured to an extension of one of the arms 38 by means of a pin 42 is the end of a carriage return arm 43 which is operated yas will more fully hereinafter appear to effect the carriage return.
Secured to the plate 16 by means of the cap screws 44 are the plates 23 and carriage frame casting 45. Formed integrally with frame 45 are the axially aligned bearings 46 and 47 for vertical shaft 48. Rigidly secured to the lower end of the shaft 48 is a type wheel stop arm 49 adapted to engage selected ones of latches 20 Iand the upper end of pin 28 integral with plate 28 to arrest the type wheel as will more full hereinafter appear. A spacing sleeve 50 a uts against arm 49 and surrounds shaft 48 extending through bearing 46. Slidably keyed to shaft 48 are the friction clutch plates 51 the lower one of which abuts against the upper end of sleeve 50. Disks 52 of friction ,material are disposed between plates 51 and worm wheel 53 which is rotatably mounted on shaft 48. Worm wheel 53 meshes with and is driven by a worm 54 which is slidably keyed to and driven by shaft 55. Shaft 55 is continuously driven 'from the continuously operating printer drive motor through a suitable gear chain (not shown) and extends through and is journaled in the housing section 56 of the frame 45. Worm 54 is positioned between suitable abutments of the housing section v56 and is moved along shaft 55 with the frame and .parts in the operation of the device. Formed integrally with frame 45 are supporting extensions 57 on which the supporting rollers 58 are rotatably secured by means of the pins 59.
Shaft 48 isprovided with a collar'61 and interposed between this collar and the upper clutch disk 51 is the helical spring 62 which urges the type wheel shaft 48 upward until the upper face of collar 61 engages the lower face of bearing 47, and at the same time compresses the friction clutch parts for driving shaft 48. Supported on the upper end of shaft 48 by means of the threaded extension 63 and nut 64 is type supporting wheel structure 65 which is provided with downwardly extending spacing sections 66. Supported in the lower part of spacing sections 66 is the 'pivot ring 67 over which the lower ends of the type carrying elements or bars 68 are hooked. Bars 68 are spaced apart by the projections 66, and are held in normal substantially Vertical position by means of springs 69 individual to the type bars and secured to the lower ends of extensions 66 by means of the screws 70. One bar 68-is preferably provided for each selective combination of notches that may be set up on the selector disks 10 to 14 inclusive. Each of the bars 68 is provided with a centering and striking projection 71 adapted to be brought into substantial alignment with the V-shaped end 72 (Figures 5 and 6) of the striking lever or arm 73. Arm`73 is pivotally supported for alignment with the printing position of a selected type bar by means of the pin 74 from the carriage framework 45 and the lower end 75 thereof is normally positioned in the path of movement of the striking bail 76. Bail 76 is carried on an arm 77 which in turn is secured to the actuating rod 78. Each time the arm 49 engages a selected latch 20 arresting the type wheel mechanism, rod 78 is actuated by a mechanism (not shown) preferably operated from a cam carried on printer main shaft 33 to effect a printing stroke of the striking bail 76 which may be effected by resilient means if desired.
As shown, twenty-six type bars 68 are provided and each bar is provided with a lower case and an upper case character indicated bythe numerals 79 and 80 respectively. Supported from frame 45 and yieldingly pressed against the character elements 79 and 80 by means of spring 81 is an inking-roller 82 i which may be of any well known or standard construction. Disposed opposite the inking roller 82 and adjacent the position of the striker arm 73 is a suitable platen 83 mounted on platen carrying shaft 84. It will be understood that platen 83 is provided with suitable paper guiding means (not shown) by means of which the paper upon which the characters are to be printed is held in proper position to receive the printing impact of the selected characters. Suitable line feed and shifting mechanisms (not shown) are also provided for the platen which may be of any well known construction. Various types of such mechanisms are well known to those skilled in the art and form no part of the present invention. These mechanisms for effecting the paging or function operations are controlled independently of the character selecting disks 1() to 14 by the vanes 1 to 5 through the. function control bars 86. Function control bars 86are provided with suitable notches arranged to permit the bars to drop in well known manner upon the setting of the selector vanes in the various combinations allotted to the individual bars. The notches in the character selector disks 10 to 14 and in the bars 86 may be so arranged that when one of the bars 86 is permitted to drop, none of the latches 20 will be selected by the bars 10 to 14 and the contro-l mechanism for shaft 33 is preferably arranged so that when a bar 86 is selected the shaft 33 will not be released for rotation. Then so arranged during function or paging operations. shaft 33 will remain at rest and no printing operation will occur. It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that one or more control operations may simultaneously be performed by thebars 86, as for example the line feed and carriage return control bars 86 may be simultaneously selected.
At the beginning of a cycle of operations shaft 33 is stationary with the high part of cam 31 under roller 29 and plate 28 is raised holding latches 20 out of engagement with permutation disks 10 to 14. lVhen no signals are being received pin 28 is engaged by arm 49 arresting the rotation of the typewlieel. Then a code combination of character selecting conditions is received, vanes 1 to 5 are tilted in accordance with the marking and spacing conditions received. Tilting of the vanes rotates the disks 10 to 14inelusive individual thereto to the right orleft as the case may be, and upon or after receipt of the last selecting condition of the code combination shaft 33 is started into rotation and cam 31 is rotated permitting plate 28 to drop disengaging pin 28 from arm 49 freeing the type wheel for rotation, and permitting latches 2O to shift into engagement with disks 10 to 14. A set of notches on disks 10 to 14 corresponding to the received code combination is lined up under Vone latch 20 and the latch adjacent the aligned slots will shift inward into the aligned slots about its pivot point under the influence of the spring 25 individual thereto into the path of rotation of arm 49. The remaining latches 20 will engage one or more of the projections of disks 10. to 14 and will be held out of the path of movement of the rotating arm 49. Type wheel shaft 49 is normally driven at such a speed that before the roller 30 of the restoring plate 28 begins to ride up on the high part of the cam 31 towards the end of the revolution of shaft 33 the outer end of arm 49 will vengage the selected latch 20 and the type wheel will be brought to rest with the selected character in printing position, regardless of the location of the selected latch about the periphery of the selecting disks 10 to 14. Immediately after arm 49 engages the selected latch and just before plate 28 is raised by the high part of the cam 31 to restore the llatches to unactuated position, shaft 78 is rocked, striking bail 76 against the extension 75 of the printing arm 73 and causing the V-shaped end 72 thereof to engage the centering and striking projections 71 of the selected type carrying bar 68. This centers the selected type bar and causes a printing impact of the selected character against the paper supported by the platen 83. Immediately after the printing impact of the selected type bar` plate 28 engages extension 27 of the selected latch 2O andshifts it out of the aligned notches. All of the latches 20 are forced out of engagement with the disks 10 to 14 and shaft 33 comes to rest completing the cycle of operations and conditioning the mechanism for the succeeding cycle of operations. During each rotation of shaft 33 the worm 34 is rotated through a single revolution and shifts the frame 45 together with the mechanism carried thereby a distance of one space with relation to the stationary platen 83 to effect proper spacing between printed characters. This cycle of operationsis repeated for each code combination of character selecting conditions received. As soon as selector latches dit 20 are restored al succeeding combination may be set up on the disks l0 to 14. By providing a suitable receiving mechanism interposed between the line and the control members 8, the reception of a succeeding code combination may proceed during the printing of the preceding selected character. In this manner an overlap of the printing and receiving operations may be provided.

When it is desired to print an upper case character 80 a shift control code combination must be transmitted causing selectingof the shift control bar 86, and operation of the shift mechanism to raise the platen 83 so that the upper case character 8O of the selected type bar will be in position to deliver a printmg impact to the paper. The charlacter selecting combination must then be transmitted and the upper case character of the selected type bar will be printed. Before another lower case character can be printed,A
a special unshift code combination must be received to cause selection. of the unshift control bar 86 t0 restore platen 8.3 to its lower case position. At the completion-of a lline a special code combination is transmitted to actuate line feed control bar 86 effecting rotation of the platen a distance of one line. To effect theJ carriage return a code combination is 'transmitted to select the carriage return control bar 86 causing actuation of the carriage return bar 43 and rotation of arm 38 and rack 37 in a counter-clockwise direction,
disengaging the rack 37 from the worm 34.-
A carriage return mechanism of any well known type (not shown) restores the carriage to its starting position at the beginning of the line. A plurality of bars 86 may be simultaneously selected, and it is to be noted that during the function operations, shaft 33 remains stationary holding plate 28 upward with pin 28 in the path of rotation of arm 49. Arm 49 will accordingly engage pin 28' v arresting the type wheel, and no spaclng or printing operation will occur when a function is selected.
While the mechanism has been described in connection with a page printer having a movable type carrying carriage, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that it may be utilized in a printer in which the paper platen is movable to effect character spacing.
Also, instead of shifting the platen to effect printing of' upper case characters the type carrying wheel or basket may be shifted vertically to effect the shift operation. If-desired, the shift mechanism may be entirely eliminated, and the number of character elements and permutation disks may be increased to eii'ect the printing of any desired number of characters. adapted for use as a tape printer by making the carriage stationary and providing a tape The invention is also` sition and the tape may be fed by a suita le` mechanism from right to left in a substantially horizontal planeacross the front of the machine in a manner well known in the art. In a selecting mechanism, a plurality of select-ing members capable of being moved to a plurality of positions, a plurality of elements selectively conditioned for operation by said selecting members, means for operating said elements, and means for locking said selecting members during operation of said selected elements.

In a recorder, a plurality of character elements, a permutation mechanism comprising a plurality of movable selector members operative to select the character element to be operated, means for operating the selected character element, and means to lock said movable selector members in position during the printing operation of said selected character element.
92. In a recorder, a paper platen, a plurality of type bars cooperating therewith, said carriage and platen being relatively movable to form character spaces, a permutation mechanism comprising a plurality of movable selector members to select the type bar to be operated, and means to lock said selector members in position during the printing operation.
93. In a recorder, a plurality of character elements, a permutation mechanism comprising a plurality of tiltable selector vanes t0 select the character element to be operated, printing means to operate the character element, and means to lock said tilting vanes during the printing operation of said printing means.

In a recorder, a recording member movable to form character spaces, means to perform function other than recording, a permutation device -movable with said recording member to selectably controlsaid memberl comprising a plurality of selectable members, and a second permutationdevice mounted t0 selectably control recorder function operations.

In a printing telegraph receiver, a plurality of type bars arranged in a circle, a plurality of notched selecting disks positioned horizontally and below said type bars, means for operating said disks in a horizontal plane to select one of said type bars for operation, and means responsive following the selection for operating the selected type bar to record the character carried thereby.
96. In a printing telegraph receiver, a vertically extending support, a plurality of selecting members supported in dillerent horizontal planes by said support, a plurality of type bars arranged in a circle and positioned directly above said members, means for moving said members in their respective horizontal planes to select a type bars and means responsive following the selection for operating the selected type bar to record the character carried thereby.r

In a printing telegraph receiver, a circular type basket, a plurality of type bars positioned vertically in said basket, a plurality of selector disks positioned in a horizontal plane below said type basket, means for operating said disks to select one of said 4 type bars, and means operated following the selection of the type bar for effecting its operation.
98. In a printing telegraph receiver, a support, a plurality of selectin members held in diilerent horizontal planes by said support, a. plurality of type bars arranged in a circle and positioned directly above said members, a plurality of latch members, each having an operating and a non-operating position, means whereby said latch members are normally urged toward their operating position, said selecting members operative in response to current impulses for permitting one of said latch members to assume its operating position, and means to record from said type bars under the control of said operated latch member.
