UN'I'vERsAL FOLDING CHAIR Filed April 7, 1930 Patented June 28, 1932 UNITED vvs'i'ATi-:s PATENT OFFICE .Jesse C. MOORE, .or INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, AssIGNoaro COLUMBIA soIIooLisUIrLY l COMPANY, vor INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, A CORPORATION v vUNIVERSAL YFOLDING CHAIR Appiieati'on :med April 7,
rl/his invention relates to a so-zc'alled all metal collapsible chair.y 4 Y The chiefobjectof the invention is to pro-k duce a relatively indestructible chair suitable '5 lfor schools, lecture rooms and the like, wherein all parts ofthe chair are preferably of in alternate dual `positioning of the `tablet,
when the chair is collapsed.
' The fullnatu-re yof the invention `will be understood from Sthe accompanying .drawing and the following description and claims: imA In the drawing Fig. 1v .is a `perspective vi-ew of a inet-al vchair embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front Yelevational view of the chair collapsed and with thetablet in upwardly extended position. Y f 5V Fig. 3 is a similar view lof the chair col# lapsed and with the tablet in thevlower/defv pending position. f y j vIn the drawing 10 indicates a tubular leg portion, 11a ,connecting portion, the vsame forming a tubular Vinverted lU-'shaped iframe .member. lThe bottom ends `of the U-fshape'dl frame or arms are preferably provided with feet in the formof metal caps or vthe like', the saine being Vindicated'bythe numeral 12. as
type, should silencing of chair movement while in use be desired.Y Y
The chair is of the Vfolding type. .The support for the seat includes a pair of tubular legs 13, the bearing ends of which are similarly provided with caps 14 and the upper ends of which support a pivot forming bearing member lwhich supports a pivot .16, in turn pivotally connected to an offset strip 17. The other end of the strip is pivotally supported as at 18 on the depending side 19 of the chair seat which includes the perforated central load sustaining portion-20 defined by a border portion 21, the perforated portion Said caps may, however, be of the cushionjecting portions.
20 being depressed as shown relative to the 1930. VSerial No. 442,075.y
border portion.` The seat apertures are indi@ Y cated bythe numeral y.22 and for-m IaV ventilated structure similar to ka cane seat.' Thev seat flange 19 is extended alongtlie forward edge as at 23v and a back flange 24 is likewise provided `to prevent cutting `of the hands in the opening and closing movement of the cliair. The seat adjacent each lrearcorner .as
Vat`124,fis provided with an edge conformingV spacing sleeves 29 coaxial Vwith the construe!v .tion27 fand. 28. Y
The chair is not provided with a complete i back but merely a shoulder rest yand the same includes a plate which is disheda'tits mid# portion. vThe free edge is 'indicated at '30,:
.l and fthe bottom edgek yadjacent theretois turnedrearwardly and the latter cur-led as at 181 tof-prevent cutting of the hands. 'The upper andouterl-portions of `the shoulder rest 31 Iare "turned outwardly as at 32 and ai'ejv turned to conform to 'the curvature olf the midportion 'of the U shaped frame 'and such conforming flangef32 lis spot welded or-o'therwise suitably secured to the lmidportion (of the1 frame without' danger of hand cutting 'proa The shoulderv portion is ornamented and reinforced by including the centrally formed embossmen't 33 which ex-y tends forwardly from the border portion.
The tablet construction includes an Lglor angle Vshaped wooden member 40 which has secured asiat Ll2aloiigzits bottom face anzangle ironfftl .and :infspaced relation therewith is anl angular clip 43. 4A iU-shaped member #Ms pivotally suligpor'ted lateach Aend as at 45. :y
Integra-l therewith V'is va depending stein 461 which is tubularand which is providedfwitli saidtube is a rod 48. Asetsore-w49` adjjrist@`I ably positions the tablet at the desired height for writing purposes by locking rod and tube together. S'crew 49 also serves as a guide and prevents complete separation.
The rod 48 has an inwardly and angularly extending end 50 which passes through the Y opening l in the depending flange 19 of the seat. A U-shaped strap 52 having arms 53 is suitably spot welded, or otherwise secured,
m to the under face of the seat adjacent the forward portionl and the angular end is rotatably mounted therein and retained' against longitudinal displacement through the washer 54 and cotter key V55.
i5 The rearward edge or arm rest portion of the tablet through the instrumentality of a bracket suitably secured as at 61, pivotally supports said tablet as at 62, the anchorage being maintained by the nut 63.
205 When fully collapsed, it will be noted that the leg portions lie substantially in the plane of the seat and lie in the gap formed between the end of flange 19 and the adjacent end of flange 24. The link support for the legs upon 2LT, the seat permits of this relatively flat collapsible positioning. When it is desired-to collapse the chair, the conformation of the tablet is such that when it is in extended position and the 'chair collapsed, it will conform 305. to theU-shaped frame work, see Fig. 2. Likewise, the conformation is such that in the collapsing positioning, when the tablet is to be positionedV downwardly, the same may be accomplished by loosening the clamping p57 screw construction 49 and permitting the two telescopic members to slide one relative to the other, as noted. This positioning of the tablet is shown in Fig. 8.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that 40.; standard metal structures are employed. The
seat isa sheet metal stamping, the legs and frame areY tubular members, the former being substantially straight, and the back being a single member fashioned in U-shaped forma- 45, tion. The tablet, of course, is of the conventional construction and the reinforcement for the arm portion is the angle iron which simultaneously serves as the pivotal support.
The invention claimed is:
50.. l. In a chair, the combination with a back` frame and a seat pivoted thereto so as to fold up, of an arm rest pivoted at its rear end to said frame, and a support for the arm rest consisting of two telescoping members,
55 vone of said members pivoted to the front end of the arm rest and the other member pivoted to the front of the seat, wherebyA the arm rest may be folded either upward or downward against the folded frame and seat.
"HQ 2. In a chair, the combination with a back frame and a seat pivoted theretoV so as to fold up, of an arm rest pivoted at its rear end to said frame, a support for the arm rest consisting of two telescoping members, one
5' member pivoted to the front end of the 'armi rest and the other to the front of the seat, whereby the arm rest will fold either upward or downward against the folded frame and Seat, and a set screw in said telescoping members for locking them when the chair is in condition for use. Y
3. A. folding chair having a seat, a back frame to which the rear end of the seat is pivoted, legs flexibly connected with the front end of the seat to support it in a position for useand having between their ends a fulcrumed connection with said back frame whereby the seat and frame may be folded together, a combined arm rest and front tablet pivoted at its rear end to the side of the back frame, two telescopingmembersffor supporting the arm rest and tablet, one of` said members being pivoted to the front end of the arm rest and the other member beside the seat and pivoted to its `front end, and a set screw for locking the telescoping members in adj usted position when the chairis in use,` whereby the arm rest and tablet may befold-V ed either up or down against the frame of the'chair.
4. A folding chair having a seat, a back` frame to which the rear end of the seat is pivoted, legs fieXibly connected with the front endof the` seat when supported in a position for use and having between their ends a fulcrumed connection with said back frame wherebyY the Vseat and frame may be folded together, a combined arm rest and front tablet pivotedat its rear end to the side of the back frame, two telescoping niembers for supporting the arm rest and tablet, one of said members being pivoted to the front end of the arm rest and the other member beside the seat and pivoted to its frontv end, and a set screw for locking the'telescoping members in adjusted position when the chair is in use, said seat being so mounted that when folded upward the pivotal connection of it Vand the telescoping member is in the same plane asthe pivotal connection between the arm rest andthe back frame Y of the chair,'whereby said telescoping members iffnot locked-will permit the arm rest and tablet to be folded either upforfdown against the frame of the chair'.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature. Y. e
