This invention relates to flushing, valves of the kind which upon-being operated permits only a measured quantity of water to flow therethrough and in which a main valve is adapted to seat upon a main port between the waterinlet and the fiushing'pipe and carrying a release valve therein.
The object of the present invention is to simplify the Construction of such devices and '10 to ensure therequired quantity of water flowing through the valve at each flush.
According hereto,the device comprises a casting of usual type having therein a valve seating around a main port upon which rests 15 a valve carrying a piston or plunger fitting theinternal bore of the casting above the water inlet. The plunger is recessed at its upper end and contains avalve seating at the bottom of the recess, while a release valve is adapted to seat upon the seating in the recess and has its spindle passing through the main valve and depending to a position where it maybe operated upon by a lever on the exterior of the device. A small by-pass is provided in the wal of the plunger neck to communicate with the recess above the release valve for the purpose of governing the rate of the flow of water passing into the portionabove the plunger.
The spindle of the release valve carries a disc like member loosely or freely mounted thereon in-such a way as to have a certain amount of lateral and vertical movement so that it will tilt to a desired angle. The lower part' of the spindle is adapted when operated in a lateral direction so as to open the release valve, to be carriedagainst'the face of a tripping member and engage the other side thereof. y

Referring to the drawing, the valve consists of the usual casing 1 having a valve seating 2 for a main port 3 open to the water inlet 4, the lower end 5 of the casting being attachable to a flushing pipe in the usual manner. A valve 6 normally rests upon the valve seating 2 closing the port 3' and this valve carries a plunger 7 fitting the bore 8 of the casting above the water inlet 4. The plunger is recessed at its upper end at 9, which recess contains a valve seating 10 on which normally seats a release valve 11, the spindle 12 of which passes through a passage or port 13 in the main valve and depending downwards to a position where it may be operated by'a pin 14 operable in the usual manner by a lever 15 on the exterior of the device. The main valve 6 and the plunger con- 'sist of a tubular portion 16 having a flange 17 on which the plunger leather 19 is placed, facing held by a thin nut 20 threaded upon the upper end of the tubular portion 16. The lower end of this tubular portion has an internal shoulder 21 to receive a washer 22 for the seating of therelease valve and is held in position against the shoulder by aring 23 screwed into the tubular part 16 from the underside thereof. Below this ring 23 a rubber valve washer 24 is placed closing upon the main seating, being held in position by a tube25 having a flange 26 andscrewing into the bore of thering 23. The tube 25 depends downwardly and carries four wings 27 fitting the port 3 in order to form guides for the main valve.

The release valve 11"is of mushroomtype,
against having an annular ridge 28 upon its under side for seating upon the washer 22 in the plunger 7.
The stem 12, passing through the main valve, carries a disc 29 loosely mounted on a spindle 30 being supported on a shoulder 31 thereof. The upper reduced portion of the spindle 30 is inserted into the rod 12 and sweated therein.
A tripping member consisting of a projecting finger 33 fixed to the interior wallet the lower part 5 of the casting has one side inclined at Set so that as the pin 14: moves forward and contacts with the disc 29, the spindle 30 will contact with the inclined part 3st and be carried around the end of the finger 33 to a position indicated in dotted lines in Figures 1 and 2.
A by-pass 35 is provided in the wall 16 making communication between the inlet a and the portion above the plunger tor the purpose of governing the rate of flow of the water passing into the portion above the plunger this bye-pass being protected by a wire gauze cover 36.
The operating handle 15 may be of the usual type, having universal movement giving a. sliding motion to the pin H, such pin recoiling under the pressure of a spring when the handle 15 is released. Upon the handle 15 being operated, the pin lat immediately makes contact with the periphery of the disc 29 and the lower end of the spindle 30 strikes the inclined part 34 of the finger 33 and travels around the end of the linger to the other side thereof, this movement being facilitated by reason of the disc being free to rotate on its spindle, there being thereby no resistance between the periphery of the disc and the pin 14:. This movement will tilt the release valve as shown in dotted lines in Figure l, and permits the water in the space above the plunger to flow through the port 13 of the main valve. This releases the pressure above the plunger and causes the plunger to rise owing to the increased pressure of the water below it and thereby opens the main valve 6 permitting a full flow or" water through the port 8 into the flushing pipe. As the main valve rises it carries with it also the release valve 11 and the lower end of the spindle 30 is raised clear of the finger 33, with the result that the release valve may again seat itself in its normal position, while the water, slowly leaking through the bypass 35, will fill the space above the release valve and plunger and when equilibrium of pressure has been established on both sides of the plunger, the main valve will quietly tall and closing, prevent further passage of water into the flushing pipe.
As the plunger returns, should the pin 1a have been held in its inward position, as shown in Figure 3, the disc 29 will strike the end of the pin 14: and merely tilt as shown without in any way afi'ecting the downward vertical movement of the rod 30 and the stem 12, thus ensuring the shutting oil of the flow of water into the main valve when the required quantity has flowed through. As soon as the pin 14 returns to its ordinary position, the disc 29 will return to its normal position, as shown in Figure 1 ready to be again operated.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A flushing valve including a casing having water inlet and outlet openings, a main valve with an opening for water therethrough, a release valve controlling the opening through said main valve, an actuating pin for the release valve, the stem of said release valve passing down through the opening of the release valve, a shoulder on said stem, a disc loosely and rotatably mounted on said stem and supported by said shoulder, said release valve being actuated by said actuating pin striking the periphery of the disc, the said disc being just sufiiciently loose on its stem whereby as the release valve returns to its downward position should said disc contact with said operating pin it will tilt ust sutliciently so as not to interfere with the downward closin movement of the stem.
2. A flushing valve including a casing having water inlet and outlet openings, a main valve with an opening for water therethrough, a release valve controlling the opening through said main valve, an actuating pin for the release valve, the stem of said release valve passing down through the opening of the main valve, a shoulder on said stem, a disc loosely and rotatably mounted on said stem and supported by said shoulder said release valve actuated by said operating pin striking the periphery of said disc whereby said release valve stem is titled to open the release valve and means for holding the stem in such tilted position until said main valve has been raised the required distance.
3. A flushing valve including a casing having water inlet and outlet openings, a main valve with an opening for water therethrough, a release valve controlling the opening through said main valve, an actuating pin for the release valve, a stem of said release valve passing down through the opening of said main valve, a shoulder on said stem, a disc loosely and rotatably mounted on said stem and supported by said shoulder, the release valve being actuated by said operating pin striking the periphery of said disc whereby said release valve stem is tilted to open the release valve and means for holding said stem and release valve in such tilted position until said main valve has been raised the required distance, said means comprising a projecting finger behind which the valve stem is carried when said operating pin strikes the periphery of said disc and pushes 1,ses,591 5 said stem behind said finger the said disc rotating sufliciently to prevent friction between the operating pin and the periphery of the said disc.
4:. A flushing valve including a casing having water inlet and outlet openings, a main valve with an opening for water therethrough, a release valve controlling the opening through said main valve, an actuating pin for said release valve, the stem of said release valve passing down through the opening of the main valve, a finger projecting inwardly from the wall of the casing said finger having an inclined face against which the lower end of the stem contacts and slides when the release valve is tilted and engages behind said finger and is held in position until said release valve is carried upwards by the main valve and the end of the stem becomes clear of. the finger.
5. In the flushing valve as claimed in claim &, a disc rotatably mounted on the stem of said release valve so as freely to rotate thereon whereby as the operating pin for tilting said valve is operated andstrike's said disc which rotates in order to prevent any frictional movement between the periphery of the disc and the pin.
6. A flushing valve including a casing having water inlet and outlet openings, a main valve having an opening therethrough and adapted to seat upon a main port between the water inlet and outlet openings, a release valve controlling the opening through said main valve, said main valve having an upper tubular portion carrying a plunger fitting the casing above the water inlet, a recessed portion in said plunger above the said main valve wherein said release valve normally lies, and means on the lower end of the release valve for tilting said valve, the plunger being formed with a lower tubular portion,
a shoulder within said lower tubular portion, a ring threaded in the said lower tubular portion retaining a release valve washer against said shoulder, a main valve washer inserted between the lower tubular portion and said ring and a tubular guide threaded into said ring and retaining the main valve washer in position.
