Description
B; L O FFLER & J. WEIL.
COMBINED VEST AND SHIRT FRONT.
Patented Feb. 2'7
No. l87.7ZO.
BERNHART LOFFLER AND JACOB WEIL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED VEST AND SHIRT FRONT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 187,720, dated February 27, 1877; application filed January 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BERNHART LoFFLER and JAQOB WEIL, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented cer' tain Improvements in Dress-Fronts for Men, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. i This invention relates to the combination of a shirt-bosom, yoke, and neck-band of peculiar construction, with a vest-front formed of two sides connected at the neck, and secured at one edge or side to the shirt-front, the whole being fitted together in all its parts, and adapted to form a complete article of manfacture.
The invention consistsin the device as a new article of manufacture, when its parts are combined, constructed, and arranged as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front View of our improved dress-front, with the vest buttoned and the parts generally in the position they will assume when on the wearer. Fig. 2 is a front view, with thevest thrown open to show the shirt-frontand its attachment to the vest-front.
Let A represent the bosom, which may be of linen, as usual. This bosom may be made smaller than usual, as shown, and be surrounded with a band, a, of muslin or other cheaper material, which extends around the neck to form the yoke B. (l is the neckband, which may be arranged to receive a removable collar, as shown, or have a collar permanently attached. The bosom and yoke must be bound or stitched neatly, so as to present a finished edge, and the former be provided with a tag, I), and suitable stud and button holes. 7
D l) are the two wings of a vest-front, constructed of any suitable material of which vests are usually made, and connected together at the neck. This front is neatly bound or stitched, so as to present-a finished edge, and
' then, being carefully placed in connection with 'the shirt-front, in substantially the position shown in Fig. l, the twoare stitched or sewed firmly together down one side, as shown in Fig. 2 at c. The two parts being carefully cut to the same measure, and carefully put together before sewing fast, a smooth fit is assured, and the vest -front cannot slip to one side and expose the edge of the shirtfront. The vest-front must be provided with strings d d, or some equivalent means'of fastening.
In putting on ourimproved front the neckband 0 is first fastened around the neck, and the tag b buttoned to the drawers, or to a button on the inner side of the pants-waistband.
The vest is now buttoned and caused to sit baggage by substituting our improved front in lieu ofthe ordinary shirts and vests; and if economically inclined he may greatly re duce his laundry-bills the same way, as it is much less trouble to do up one of our fronts than a shirt and vest.
Our front may be worn with the ordinary undershirt, or with a woolen shirt of any kind, and it conduces to neatness and cleanliness, in that it may be changed frequently with very little expense or trouble.
We are aware that shirts and dickeys have been provided with imitation vest-fronts, both firmly sewed thereto and attached removably therefore, we make no claim to any such device, and Wish it understood that our invention consists in the combination of a bosom only with an open front, as shown.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new article of manufacture, a dress front for men, consisting of the vest-front D D, provided with strings d d, or their equivalents, the bosom A, constructed as shown, the yoke B, and neck-band O, the vest-front and shirt-front being attached together at their adjacent edges on one side, all'as herein set forth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto signed our names in the. presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BERNHART LOFFLER. JACOB WEIL.
Witnesses HENRY GoNNErr, ARTHUR 0. FRASER.
