Description

R. T. BUSH.
N. PETERS. PHOWUTHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
R-UFUs T. BUsH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC CANS.
S pecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,583, dated March 20, 1877; application filed December 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS T. BUSH, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference'marked thereon.
The drawing is a representation of sectional view of my improved can.
The object and purpose of the present invention is to construct a can that will readily yield to the expansion of the contents without injury to the can itself; also, forming the seam in such a manner that will greatly economize the use of solder, and at the same time produce a stronger seam, as will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a can of any suitable metal, having angular expanded sides a, a and heads b b, said heads having angular depressions c c, which form a flexible top and bottom that will yield to the expansion of the contents of the can without injury to the can itself. Flanges d d are also formed upon the heads b b, which extend to the angular flutes c e upon the sides a a, forming a solder-stop, against which the solder can be run in a compact manner, strengthening the seam and can to a much greater extent than when run upon a plain or rounded surface.
It' will be seen that a can constructed according to my invention is much more durable, and will readily yield to the expansion of the contents, which would otherwise tend to greatly weaken and injure the can, while the solder-stop makes a stronger seam with comparatively less solder than has been formerly used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A can having angularly-expanded sides a a, outward angular flutes e e, and the ends b b, formed with angular depressions c c and turned-down flanges d d, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
RUFUS T. BUSH. Witnesses:
B. E. ARROWSMITH, O. M. h'ronons.
