Description

March 14, 1933. J.. J. FLYNN 1,901,366
S CREWLES S HOLDER Filed Sept. 26. 1932 v INVENTOR TTORNEY ing which support Patented Mar. 14, 1933 UNiTED STATES PATNT OFFICE JAMES J. FLYNN, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO FARIES MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS SGBEWLESS HOLDER,
Application filed September 26,1932. Serial No. 634,899.
My invention relates to that class of holders designed to support one of the enclosing glass globes which are so much employed at present in illumination.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a holder which will automatically hold the globe in the correct position.
A further object is to provide means to release the holder without the use of tools when it is desired to gain access to the interior of the globe for cleaning or relamping.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawis hereunto annexed and is a part hereof, in which Fig. 1 is a side view of my holder, the exterior collar being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the holder.
0 Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawing, the holder is formed of an outer or exterior shell or collar 1 which is provided with a central opening 2.
25 This collar is flared outwardly and terminates in a vertical cylinder portion 3. The inner shell consists of a cylinder member 4 closed at the top except for an opening 5 adapted to receive the loop or stem of the which is not shown as obviously it is no part of my invention. The cylinder member a is provided with a plurality of lugs 6 which may conveniently be punched out of its walls, as shown they are three in number.
5 The diameter of the cylinder member, a is such that it will slidingly fit the opening 2 in the exterior collar 1. The edges of the opening 2 are provided with notches which are adapted to register with the lugs 6. Arms 7, 8 and 9 are secured to the cylinder member l by spot welding or in any other convenient or desired manner. These arms 7,8 and 9 extend radially from the cylinder member 4 in a downward and outward direction. Each one of the arms 7 8 and 9 has tonguelO which extends upwardly from the arm adiacent its outer end. As illustrated these tongues 10 are stampedout of the metal of which the arms are formed although it will be obvious they may, if desired, be formed separately and secured to the arms in some convenient manner. holder is as follows:
The operation'ot my The outer shell 1 is rotated until the ,7
notches are in register with thelugs 6 when it is raised upwardly until it is clear of the cyl-I inder member 4. The globe 11, only a fragmentary portion of which is shown, as obvi ously it is no part otmy invention since it may be of anydesired shapeor configuration, is tipped until the arms 7 and 8 can be inserted when by shifting the position of'the globe 11 the arm 9 may be passed into the interiorof t e globe 11, the neck'12 ofwhich will'abut' the tongues 10. The outer collar lis then placed over thecylinder member l in such position thatthe notches formed in the edge of its central opening will register with the lugs 6and. the lower edge of the vertical cylin'-= 7'0' der portion 3 contacts theouter' wall of the globell. The outer collar 1 is then rotated...
until the notches are out of register with the lugs 6 and in such position the lugs 6 will op:
erate to'hold the outer collar 1 against Vertical movement in an upwardly direction when it will be apparent that the glass globe l l-will be held securely and correctly in position. It will also be seen from the foregoing description that it can be removed without the use or" any tools or screws.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V V
1. A device of the character described comprising an outer collar having a central opening therein, there being a plurality of notches in the edge of said opening, a cylinder member which fits said opening, a plurality of lugs thereon adapted to register with said notches, a plurality of arms secured to said cylinder member which extend radially therefrom and in an outward and downward direction, a vertical tongue oneach arm adjacent its lower end, said tongue adapted to engage the inner side oi a globe to be supported.
2. A device of the character described comprising an outer collar having a central open- 7 7 ing therein, there being a plurality of notches in t her which fits said opening, a plurality of 190 he edge of said opening, acylinder memat v lugs thereon adapted to register with said notches, a plurality of arms secured to said cylinder member which extend radially therefrom the in an outward and downward direction, a vertical tongue stamped from each arm adjacent its lower end, said tongue adapted to engage the inner side of a globe to be supported.
3. A device of the character described comprising an outer collar having a central opening therein, there beinga plurality of notches inthe edge of said opening, a-cylinder member which fits said opening, a plurality of lugs thereon adapted to register with said notches, a plurality of arms secured to said cylinder member which extend radially therefrom and inan outward and downward; direction, a vertical tongue stampedsfromeach arm adjacent its lower end, said tongue adapted to engage the inner side of a globe to be supported", said collar flaring outwardly and downwardly and terminating in a vertical cylindrical portion.
4, Aideviceof the character described comprising-an outer collar having a centralopeningtherein, there beinga plurality ofnotches inthe edge of said opening, acylinder member which fits said, opening, means on said cylinder members to hold said collar against upwardly movement when in position, said means; being adapted to register with said notches, a plurality of arms secured to said cylinder member which extend radially therefrom and in an outward and downward l direction,va vertical tongue on each arm adjacent-its lower end, said'tongue adapted to engage theinner side of a globe to be sup-- ported: 40 JAMES J.
