This invention relates to improvements in containers and, more especially, the provision of such a container with an ear or 11p formed as a part of one wall of the same, said ear adapted to be perforated and bent upwardly to serve as a hanger for the container.

Another feature of the invention is the provision of such an ear or lip comprising a severable portion of the wall of the container so that when the same is bent upwardly, it will leave a dispensing hole in the container.

Another feature of the invention is the provision of such an ear or lip that when bent up, serves as a sort of spout so that as the material is dispensed from the container, it will flow out over this spout so that the contents can be scattered over a relatively large surface.

Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.

In those forms of devices embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in perspective; Fig. 2 1s a view taken as indicated by the line 2 of Fig. 1 showing the step of perforating the ear; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the step of bending the ear upwardly; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slight modification; Fig. 5 is a view taken as indicated by the line 5 of Fig. 4 showing the step of bending the ear upwardly; Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation showing the complete device supported by a hook in the wall; Fig. 7 is a similar fragmentary view in front elevation; and Fig. 8 is a view in side elevation showing the use of the ear in pouring contents from the container.

As shown in the drawings, the container is indicated in generally by 10. For example, the same may be a cylindrical can of the usual form and construction.

the greater part of its circumference, a portion, as indicated by 14, being left attached to the car 11 to prevent the circular piece from falling out. Obviously, if desired, the circular portion 14 could be provided with a rib seam extending throughout the entire circumference. All that is necessary is to provide some means permitting the ear to be easily perforated.

In the ractice of the invention, the ear 11 may be rst perforated with a pointed instrument, for example, an ice pick 15, as shown in Fig. 2. That is, the point of the instrument may be forced down through the ear to bend the circular portion 14 inwardly. The ear may then be bent upwardly withthe same instrument by using the same as a lever with the edge 16 of the can as a fulcrum, as shown in Fig. 3. In this manner, the ear 11 may be bent upwardly and serve as a hanger for the container. For example, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the ear 11 may be placed over a hook or other support 17 in the wall 18, said hook 17 projecting through the hole or perforation 14 in the ear left when the circular portion 14 is bent away.

In Fig. 8 it will be seen that when the ear is bent away from the end wall, an opening will be left for discharge of the contents 19 from the can, and the car 11 will serve as a spout over which the contents'of the can will flow to assist the user in scattering or spreading the same over a relatively large surface.

The modified form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is the same as above described, except that a portion of the wall 10- adjacent the car 11 is provided with cuts 19, 19 to permit insertion of the point of an instrument 15 under the edge of the ear to assist in bending it upwardly away from the wall 10. This operation is shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be' understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A container comprising a metallic wall, prepared to provide an ear portion integral with said wall and having a base portion adjacent a margin of said wall with the metal in normal condition, the metal about the remaining margins of said portion weakened to permit of ready tearing, and a portion of said ear portion spaced from its margins also weakened about a part of the periphery thereof to permit of ready severance by a perforating instrument.

2. A container comprising a metallic wall, said wall having a weakened line with ends adjacent to and separated from each other, the metal adapted for tearing along said line to provide an ear portion when torn, the metal of a part of said ear portion within said line being weakened to adapt it -for easy perforation, whereby said ear portion when perforated and bent at an angle to said wall serves as a suspending medium and as a scattering spout.
