Patented May 2, 1933 mi J. cms, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS' KNIFE Application Aled December 16, l1931. Serial No'. 581,393.
This invention relates to'knives and more particularly to pocket knives of the type in which theblade is projected longitudinally of a hollow handle, and may be locked in various positions according to the effective length of blade desired.
The main objects of this invention are to Fig. 4 is l'an enlarged sectional viewl of av complete knife taken as on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Y
Fig. 5 is a side view of the `blade. y
Fig. 6 is a perspective view ofthe blade locking spring.
Fig. 7 is a perspective /view of the forward end of theinner casing.
Fig. 3. a i L eferring more in detail to the. drawing,
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the rear end of the inner casing.
Fig. .9 is an enlarged sectional view of a vcomplete knife taken as on the line 9 9 `of the knife 1 comprises a finished outer casing 2, an inner. casing 3, and a knife blade 4.
v The blade 4 is provided with a butt or, shank 5 andis slidable longitudinally in the inner casing 3. The shank 5 is provided with a longitudinal aperture 6' which isspanned by a bridge or fulcrum 7. The brid e 7 is thinner than the shank so as to provide a depression or groove for the cantilever s ring 8 and also .to provide a fulcrum there or.
The spring8 is bowed at 9 where it seats in the groove 10 on bridge 7 and is iush with the upper .plane of the shank. The bowed end of the spring interlockingly engages the cut out portion ofthe shank 5 as shown in Fig. 3 and is therefore flush with the lower face plane of the shank. ,Theother end of the spring 8 has an interiorly threaded collar 11 setl therein tovreceive the threaded shank of a latch button 12 located for operation i the thumb of the user.
The inner casing 3 is provided with spaced 55 stop recesses 13 and interconnecting slots 14 as shown in Fig. 2. The outer casing 2 has a longitudinal slot 15 in registry with slots 14.
In assembling the device, the spring 8 with 60 the screw 12 removed is placed over the bridge 7 of the shanle in the manner inwhich it is shown in,y Fig. 3, and the blade vand spring are then slipped into the inner` casingl 3'y by Iinsertin them through the front end of casing (see ig. 7). The blade is forced inwardly until the collar 11F slips int-o one ofl the recesses 13 and then the latch button 12 is screwed into the collar 11. The outer casing 2 is now applied to the entire unit so lthat 70 the end opening and the side slot 15 are the only exposed openings. (See Fig. 1'.) f
In operation the latch button is forced inwardly, 4disengaging the collar 11 from apert-ure 13. The latch button is now pressed V inwardly and moved forwardly for opening thev knife, or rearwardly for closing. The recesses 13 act as stops for the collar 11. The effective lengthjof the blade /is determined by the user who adjusts it by moving the latch into any one of the recesses 13. f
It,l is to `be understood that the cantilever spring 8 constantly urges the collar outwardlyandfthat when the inward pressure is released the spring forces the collar into the, first recess it passes and locks it thereY until the inward pressure is again applied. f
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it is to be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departinglfrom the 'spirit of the invention as defined bythe following claims: i I claim: 95
l. A knife comprising a hollowhandle, a blade longitudinally slidable in said handle and adapted to be projected beyond one end thereof, said blade having a, supporting shank on one end wherein'an aperture 100 is provided, said shank having a bridge and for moving said blade longitudinally of formed across said aperture, a cantilever said handle.
