Description

R. THOMPSON BUC'KET SHIELD May 23, 1933.
Filed Sept. 26 1950 A Home y Patented May 23, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to an attachment for buckets and the like and has 'for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a shield in the form of a receptacle adapted to receive the lower end portion of th bucket therein in a manner to support said bucket and prevent the same from coming in contact with the ground,
Another important obJect of the invention is to provide a bucket shield of the aforementioned character having novel means whereby the same may be expeditiously secured in position on the bucket or detached therefrom when desired.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a bucket shield of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, eflicient in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention may become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view principally in elevation and partly in section showing a bucket shield constructed in accordance with this invention mounted in position on a bucket.
Figure 2 is a view in bottom plan of the shield.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the bucket taken substantial ly on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 1 designates a bucket of conventional construction to which is secured in the usual manner a bail 2. The attachment constituting this invention comprises a comparatively shallow pan designated generally by the reference numeral 3 which is of a size to receive the lower end portion of the bucket 1 and said pan comprises a bottom 4 and the upstanding annular side wall 5. Upstanding apertured ears 6 are rigidly mounted on the wall portion 5 of the pan 3 at circumferentially spaced points thereon. Coiled springs 7 have one end connected with the ears 6 and their opposite ends engaged with the connecting portion 8 (see Figure 3) of the shanks 9 and 10 of the hooks 11 and 12, respectively. The hooks 11 are adapted for engagement over the upper edge or head 13 of the bucket 1 and the hooks 12 are materially larger than the hooks 11 and adapted for the reception of the finger of a person for mounting the shield in position on the bucket or for detaching the same from the bucket.
As will be apparent, when the hooks 11 are engaged over the upper edge of the bucket 1 the coiled springs 7 are under tension and the pan or shield 3 is thus yieldingly clamped against the lower end of the bucket. In this manner the device is releasably maintained in position. It will thus be seen that the bucket 1 will be prevented from coming into 7 contact with the ground when said bucket is resting thereon. It will further be seen that the pan 3 is adapted for use on buckets of different sizes. When it is desired to remove the shield from the bucket, it is simply necessary to engage a finger under the hooks l2 and lift thereon in a manner to disengage the hooks 11 from the upper edge of the bucket.
It is believed that the many advantages of a bucket shield constructed in accordance with this invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of constructions may' be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is s an improvement in bucket shields in which the shield is disposed below a bucket and retractile springs are connected to the shield and extend upwardly therefrom alongside a bucket and arev provided at their upper ends with terminal hooks, the herein described bucket engaging hooks each eonsisting essentially of a pendent loop adapted to receive in its lowermost and bight portion a terminal hook of one of said retractile springs, an inwardly directed bill at the upper end of the inner arm of said loop and adapted to engage over the upper edge of a bucket,
and an outwardly directed and outwardly extending bill at the upper end of the outer arm of the loop and constituting a, handle for the manipulation of the hook in connecting a shield spring to and disconnecting the same from a bucket.
In testimony whereof I affix mv signature.
RAYMOND THOMPSON.
