PAPER MATCH HOLDER.
Filed Oct. 18, 1932 IN VEN TOR. ,4004 PH O/VD/P/ CE/f ATTOREY' Patented June 6, 1933 UNITED STATES ADOLPH ONDRICEK, OF ASTORIA, LONG ISLAND, NEW YQRK mm MATCH HOLDER Application filed October 18, 1932. Seria1 No. 638,322. I
, is to provide a device in the form of a rectangular body of suitable sheet material,
preferably sheet metal, one part of the body being fashioned to form one or more spring arms adapted to engage the paper match to s'upportthe same in connection with the body,
said body having at one side thereof a reduced extending tongue portion fashioned to form a spring clip facilitating the mountingof the device in connection with a belt or other support; a further object being to provide a device of the class described where in the spring clip joins the body portion of the device in a forwardly curved member cooperating with the curved or folded edge 9 of the wrapper of said paper matches to normally hold the closure flap of the wrapper in a osition covering the matches; a further ob ect being to provide another edge of said body with a channel member in which the bound or secured end of the matches or match package is adapted to rest, preventing vertical displacementof the paper matches in the holder; '21 further object being to provide a holder of the class described including a relatively narrow arm adapted to be positioned over the bound end of the matches and within the striking and retaining flap of the package to aid in supporting the matches in the holder and to provide a backing for the 5 striking surface of the matches; a still further object being toprovide means for supporting thewrapper of the paper matches in the holder so as toprevent lateral displacement thereof; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose spec1- fled, which is simple in construction, efficient in use, and which is constructed, as hereinafter described and claimed. a
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each I of the views, and in which:
edge.
- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device made according to my invention, illustrating the method of its use.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2+2 of Fig. 1.
i Fig. 3 is a face view of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the paper matches detached; and,
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In carrying my invention into effect, I provide a body portion of sheet material, preferably of sheet metal, fashioned to form a substantially rectangular part 5 having a reduced tongue portion extending centrally from one side edge thereof, the latter being bent and fashioned to form a spring clip 6 which joins the part 5 in a forwardly and upwardly curved member 7.
The'opposite side edge of the part 5 has a projecting part 8 fashioned to form a retaining channel arranged longitudinally of said Formed from the control portion of the part 5 are two spring arms 9 and 10, both of which are arranged outwardly of the outer face of said part. The arm 10 is spaced a greater distance from the part 5 than the arm 9, and said arm 9 terminates at its free end in up warly flared corners 11 facilitating the insertion of the arm within the wrapper of a papermatch package 12 of conventional form and construction.
The package 12 contains a plurality of paper matches 13 bound together at the ends 14, the free ends of the matches having the usual phosphorous or other igniting tips 15. These matches are contained in a wrapper consisting of a sheet of light cardboard folded to form a back wall 15, a closure flap 16 as an extension of the wall 15 and a sealing and striking flap 17 secured to the bound ends 14 of the matches by a staple or other means indicated at 18, as is the usual practice.
Inmounting the package 12 in connection with my improved holder as shown in the accompanying drawing, the arm 9 is placed between the back 15 of the wrapper and the matches 13, whereas the arm 10 is placed between the bound end 14: of the matches and the flap 17 as well as inwardly of the free end of the closure flap 16 as is clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. 1 00 in the pocket or in a pocket 00k,
' It will also may be ornamented in any desired manner .5 manner, thus making the'device an 5 properties operate to depress the side edge of the backing 15 of the wrapper so as to pos1t10n the same 1n almement with the adpcent wall of the part 5 formed by the opening 5a therein, thus retaining the package 12 against lateral displacement or shifting in the holder as will be apparent. It will also be understood that the lower bound edge of the package is arranged within the channel 8, and this the curved member 7' also retains the package against vertical displacement with respect to the holder.
When the package is mounted in the holder,
it will be understood that the flap 16 may be raised to permit the removal of one of the matches 13. In the latter operation, the arm 10 will aid in the tearing off or removal of the paper match, forming a backing or reinforcing wall for this purpose. When a match is removed, the flap 16 previously raised under tension against the curved member 7 will automatically be lowered or moved into a position covering the matches necessitating the user to place the free end of the flap 16 within or beneath the flap 17 prior to striking the match on the striking surface of said flap 17. In the latter operation, it will'be understood that the arm 10 will serve as a backing, facilitating the striking of the want holder be the type described, a is possible for an individual to open the paper 35 match.
package, remove a match therefrom and strike the match with one hand, assuming that the holder is mounted in connection with a suitable support. It will thus be apparent that a device of this class will find its usefulness by hunters, fishermen, olfers and others.
While the spring cl ip 6 of the holder is designed for use in mounting the holder upon a belt, it will also be understood that this clip or other means may be employed for supporting the same in connection-with a pocket or other support. .Aside from this method of mounting, it will also be understood that the holder maybe used as a. convenient means for supporting and carrying aper matches it being understood that after one package of paper matches has been consumed, the same may be quickly: removed and another packa replaced in the v lderwhich will provide an unlimiteduse. 1 be understood that the device and composed of expensive or inexpensive materials, and at the same time, the severalparts of the device may; contain advertising or other-matter formed therein in any dechannel in conjunction with both arms and tractive and desirable advertising medium,
and by virtue of the simplicity of the construction of the complete holder, the same may be produced at a very nominal cost.
It will'also be understood that while I have shown the holder as designed for supporting .a package of specific structure and contour,-
the holder may be modified in its design to support packages of any shape or form, and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described 7 may be made within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
