This invention relates to improvements in hip pads and, more especially, such devices adapted for athletes engaging in sports, such as football, basketball, or the like, in whlch they are exposed to injury.

The device is so constructed as to afford protection to the hips and base of the spine, at the same time affording freedom of motion andaction.

Among the features of the inventionls the rovision of means adapted to hook under the belt of the wearer to assist in holding the trousers up and the pad down.v

As shown in the drawings, the devlce 1ncludes a padded waist band open in front and adapted to be held together by the strap 11 and buckle 12. This band is preferably made of suitable padded or quilted material.

For example, the band may have double walls 10 and 10 with padding 10 between. 10 may indicate quilting stitches to hold the padding 1O in place. The upper edge of the waist band 10 is designed to enclrcle'the body of the wearer slightly above the hips. Said waist band is widened at the sides and rear toform projections extending substantiallybelow the waist. Said projections at the sides are indicated by 13 and 14 andthe projection in the rear is indicated by 1 5.

The side-projections carry lower hip protecting plate members 16 and 17 made out of any suitable material, for example, leather, fibre, or the like. The rearprojection 15 carries a pair of spine-protecting plate memembodiments of my invention, it' is to be PAD 1932. Serial No. 613,721.

The waist band 10 also carries on each side i above theplate members 16 and 17, upper hip-protecting plate members 16 and 17 respectively, made of leather, fibre, or similar material. 16 and 17 indicate hip-protecting bridging members to bridge the spaces between the upper and lower plates. These members are preferably attached to the upper plates by lacing 19, saidlacing permitting relative movement'between the upper plates and bridging plates and sliding movement between the bridging plates and lower plates. This construction affords the wearer considerable freedom of movement; 1

Under the spine-protecting plates 18, 18, the padding 10 in the waist band is preferably thickened or bulged inwardly, as indicated by 10 10. Likewise, said padding is thickened under the lower hip plates 16 and 17, as indicated by 10 and under the upper hip plates 16 and 17 as indicatedbylO.

Mounted on each of the upper hip plates 16 and17 a is a horizontally arranged elongated tubular projecting member 20 made of leather or similar material. These members are adapted to hook under the belt of the if wearer and serve to hold the pad device down and the trousers up. As here shown, the

. tubular members 20 are provided with rubber tubes 21 inside and thus said members 20, in addition to performing the function just stated, act as cushions or pads, thus affording additional protection to the wearer against injury; As here shown, the members 20 are sewn to the plates 17 by the stitching 22 and 23. The lower edge of each member 20, as indicated by 20 is provided with holes E20 which accommodate the lacing 19 serving to attach the plates 16 and 17 While I have shown and described certain understood that it is capable-of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made withoutdeparting from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claim, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
