Description

CIO
HORA'IIO POLLARD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HEEL-SPUR TO PREVENT SLIPPING ON ICE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,205, dated January 26, 1858.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HoRATIo POLLARD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Heel-Spur to Prevent Slipping on Ice, &c., and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specication of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said invention, by which it may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patents.
The figures of the accompanying pla te of drawings representmy improvements.
Figure l is a central vertical section on an enlarged scale, showing the heel spur inserted in the heel of a boot or shoe. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the spur projecting. Fig. 3 is a view of the screw socket in which the spur is held.
The object of the present invention is to provide a spur to be inserted in the heels of boots and shoes to prevent the liability of persons slipping uponice &c., and so constructed as to either project from the bottom of the heel or be drawn up into the same as may be desirable. This result I accomplish by first permanently inserting in the heel a metallic socket, fastened therein by means of a screw thread cut on its outer surface or in any other proper manner, and having a female thread cut in its inner circumference. A sharpened spur or stud with thread of the socket, can by turning it with a suitable key, be screwed up or down in the socket, so that its point will either project any desired distance from the heel or made flush with the bottom surface of the same, when not in use.
a, a in the drawings represent a stud or spur with a sharpened point and having a male screw thread cut on its outer surface.
Z) Z) is a socketfastened into the heel c c by a screw thread Z and having a female screw thread in its inner circumference into which the male screw of the spur a a fits as shown in the drawings.
It will thus be seen that by turning the spur a a by means of a key or otherwise, it can be moved up into the heel as seen in Fig. l or made to project therefrom as tages of which arrangement in a device of this kind will readily be apparent.
Having thus described my improvements` I shall state my claim as follows.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination of the screw socket and screw stud or spur as. described and for the purpose specified.
HORATIO POLLARD.
