This invention relates to improvements in display boxes.

The primary object of .the invention resides in a cardboard box in which merchandise may be packed for shipment, and when received and opened by the retail merchants, the same may be folded to produce a double tier display stand by which the merchandise may be attractively displayed for sale.

Another feature of the invention is to providea cardboard box in which a portion of the box body is swung upon itself to open the box and which portion is supported upon the top of the box body within the connes thereof for displaying articles or packages originally contained within the box to produce a step-back double tier display box.

A further object is the provision of a display box having the above features which is constructed of a single blank of scored cardboard or the like, which is easy to set up for use, and rigid when opened to display position.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the display box in closed position.

Referring to the drawings by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates a single blank of cardboard or other sti bendable material from blank is of substantially rectangular conguration in plan as seen in Figure 7 of the drawings. The blank 10 is foldable lengthwise on the spaced fold lines 11 and 12 and crosswise on the fold lines 13, 14 and 15. Thev above mentioned'fold lines divide the blank into a top wall flap 16, top wall proper 17, top wall ap 18, side wall 19, front wall 20, side wall 21, rear wall 22, bottom lock flap 23, botton wall 24, bottom lock flap 25, andl a bottom wall flap 23. The top wall aps 16 and 18 are provided with transverse fold lines 27 and 28 which are disposed approximately midway between their-length, the said fold lines extending from the free edges .o of the sides of the mp to the longitudinal fold which my display box is constructed, and whicli- The rear section of the top wall ilap 16 is formed by the fold line 27 and is provided with spaced angularly disposed slits 33 for receiving the tongues 34 provided onl a locking flap 35 which is coextensive with one side of the rear wall 22. One corner of the top wall flap 16 is provided with a locking tab 36 for reception in a slit-or slot 37 provided in the front section of the top wall flap 18. The opposite sides of the top wall 17 are free of the adjacent top wall flaps 16 and 18 and is formed by slitting or cutting the blank inwardly from the outer edge of the fold line 11. The top wall 17 is provided with spaced fold lines 38 and 39, the same being transversely disposed of the top wall while cut from the material between the said fold lines is a display tab 40.

The outer free edge of the top wall 17 is formed with a locking tongue 41 for reception in a slot 42 formed in the rear section of the top wall flap 18 when the box is set up and in display position.

Coextensive with the side wall 19 is a fastening iiap 43 which when the box is in a set up position, is adhesively secured to the inside of the -rear `wall 22 as will be seen by reference to Figure 3 of the drawings.

The front wall 20 is formed with a pair of angularly disposed slots or slits 44 for the reception of the locking tongues 34 of the ap 35 when thev box is in display position as seen in Figure 6 of the drawings. The bottom lock flap 23 is provided with a pair of locking tongues 454 for reception in slots or slits 46 provided in the bottom flap 25.

In assembling' the box for use, the same is folded on the fold lines 11 and 12, 13, 14, and 15 into substantially rectangular configuration as shown in Figure 1, the ilap 43 being secured to the rear wall 22. The bottom aps 24 and 26 are folded inwardly in overlapping engagement, after which the bottom ap 25 is folded beneath the same and that in turn isA lapped by the v bottom lock ap 23, the locking tongue 45 being received in ,the slots 46. .The folding so far has produced a box open at its top, and after the held in a closed position by the bending of the flap 35 over the ap 16 and inserting the locking tabs or tongues 34 into the slots 33. This produces a box in accordance with the position shown in Figures 1, 2, and 5 of the drawings.

Assume that it is desired to open the box and utilize the same for displaying the contents of the same, the flap 35 is separated from the outert'op flap 16 while the locking ap 36 remains in locked position. The operator then presses upon the tab 32 in the front wall to break. open the box on the scored or weakened lines 29, 30 and 31, which divides the rectangular` shaped box into a lower base section A and a closure section B. After breaking open the box in this manner, the closure section B is swung backwardly upon the fold lines 27 and 28, and these fold lines being substantially midway between the ends of the top wall section permits the rearward swinging of the closure section B to a position where it is within the connes of the walls of the lower base section A as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. When swung to this position, the same is held by inserting the-locking tongues 34 of the flap 35 into the slots 44. Thus the two sections A and B are firmly locked together,

and produces a display box of the double tier type, the upper tier being stepped back from the lower tier to enable the display of the box contents -on\both the upper and lowertier sections. After swinging the section B back upon the base section A, the inner flap 17 of the top wall is folded on the lines 38 and 39 to produce a vertical upstanding front wall for the upper tier section B, the said wall being secured in vertical position by inserting the locking tongue 41 into the slot 42 of the top wall flap 18. The Vdisplay tab 40 is then swung upwardly to a position coextensive with the rear fold 47, and if desired advertising indicia 48 may be provided on the tab 40 and the exposed portion of the flap 47.

It has been the practice in constructing display boxes of the multiple tier type to swing a portion of the box body beyond the rear wall of the same, but such construction requires the use of an easel for supporting the upper tier section in order to rigidly support the box and its display besides taking up additional space when in such display position.

From the foregoing description taken in conjunction 'with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a box which when broken open is swung to a display position forms a pair of shelvesor tiers, the upper one being stepped back from the lower and within the confines of the lower base section.y That portion of thefront wall of the box body integral with the base section A after the section B has been swung to a display position constitutes a front wall to confine the articles supported by the lower base section, whereas the wall 47 constitutes a front confining wall/for the articles supported in the upper tier section B.

While I have shown and described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of the invention, I wish it to be understood that such changes as come within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to if desired.A

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isz- 1. A display box comprising a base section, a

closure section hinged to the top of said base section and coacting therewith when closed to provide a closed container, said closure section resting upon the top of said base section when fully opened to provide a double tier display structure, and a collapsible wall structure within said closure section for folding nat against a wall thereof when said closure section is closed and adapted to extend at right angles to said wall when the closure section is in a raised position to provide a front wall therefor.

2. A display box comprising a box body of normally rectangular shape having an inner and outer top wall, a fold line'extending transversely across the outer top wall of said box body, a continuous score line extending transversely across the front wall of said box body adjacent the bottom thereof and across the adjacent side walls and terminating at the opposite ends of said fold line, the box body adapted to be broken open upon the score line to provide a lower base section, and

a section adapted to be swung upon said fold line to an open inverted display position upon the top of the base section to provide an upper section, the lower portion of the front wall constituting a front confining wall for the base section when the upper section is swung to open display position, and a flap cut and bent from a portion of the inner top wall forming part of the top section, for providing a transversely disposed front display wall for the upper section when the same is in open display position.

A display box comprising a rectangular shaped box body having a bottom wall, a front wall, a rear wall and opposed side walls, an inner top wall integral with the front wall, overlapping interlocking flaps integral with the side walls and foldable inwardly over the inner top wall and constituting an outer top wall, aligned transversely disposed fold lines provided on said flaps and said inner top wall, a continuous score line extending transversely across the front wall adjacent the bottom thereof and across the adjacent side walls and terminating at the ends of said fold lines, the box body adapted to be broken open upon the score line to provide a lower base section and a section adapted to be swung upon said fold line to an open inverted display position upon the top of said base section to provide an upper section, and a flap cut from the forward portion of said inner top wall and adapted to be bent to a position transversely of and at right angle to said inner top wall and extend across to the side walls thereof when said upper section is swung to an open display position and constituting a front confining wall for the said upper section when in open display position.`

4. A display box comprising a box body having a bottom wall, front wall, rear wall, and opposed side walls, flaps integral with the top of the side walls and folded inwardly to provide a top wall, transverse fold lines provided on said flaps and disposed in register with each other, interlocking means between said flaps to hold the same in closed position, a continuous score line extending transversely across the front wall adjacent the bottom thereof andacross the adjacent side walls and terminating at the respective fold lines, whereby a section of said box body may be broken therefrom and swung upon said fold lines to an inverted display position upon the top of the other section, and a locking flap coextensive with the top of said rear wall normally folded over the top wall, and slots provided in a wall of the broken away section to receive said locking flap when said section isin inverted display position for securing the same in such position.
