A structure embodying the features of the invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated 1 represents the rear cover and 2 the front cover of the binder, these covers being connected to the back 3 by the flexible hinge connections 4. Sheets are conventionally shown at 5.

The binder mechanism, that is, the mechanism aside from the cover or other support consists of the base plate 6 which is formed of suitable '55 pins.. At its rear edge the base 'plate 6 is consheet-material and'secured to the rear cover at formed to provide an inwardly facing channel 10, the front flange 11 of this channel being bent up in lesser curved channel form from the flat front portion of thebase plate.

The channel constitutes a spring supporting element for the rocker bar 12 which has offsets 13 and 14 therein rocking ly engaging the rear flange 15 of the channeL- L-shaped guards lfiare secured to this rocker barand disposed through holes 1'7. in the top of the channeLthese holes being alined with the posts so that the guards coact therewitha The rocker bar extends at one end-from the end of the channel and terminates in "the laterally disposed finger piece '18, by which the rocker bar may be, manipulated.

The thrust member 20, preferably yoke or U-shaped, is arranged with the. base of the U inthe curveof the front flange of the channel with its arms 21in supporting engagement with the. rocker bar so that atoggle action results as the offsets 13 and 14. swing above and below horizontal position, and the guards are yieldingly held in closed position as shown by full lines in Fig. 2, or in open position as shown by dotted. lines in that figure.

With this arrangement of parts the base plate 6 may be formed of thin material, no attempt being made to show the gage thereof in the accompanying drawing, so the sheets arranged upon the posts lie substantially flat upon the rear cover; The structure is very simple and economical to produce and convenient to manipulate, the strain upon the sheets being minimized as the posts 8 are fixed posts, that is, they are not moved in opening and closing the binder, the guards simply being swung away from the posts. If desired the sheets may be swung upon the guards to afford access to any particular sheet.

The binder unit being mounted on the rear cover permits the opening of the binder without any stress upon the sheets and at the same time the front or top cover may be swung over the rear cover to close the binder, the back 3 then being in an upright position at the rear of the binder mechanism.

We have illustrated our improvements in an embodiment which we have found very satisfactory, both from a utility and manufacturing standpoint. We have not attempted to illustrate various modifications and adaptations which we contemplate as we believe this disclosure will enable those skilled in'the art to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.

Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a temporary binder, the combination with front and rear covers and a back having hinge connection with said covers, of a base plate mounted on the rear cover adjacent the rear edge thereof and having an integral inwardly facing channel at its rear edge, posts mounted on said base plate, said channel having openings in its top alined with said posts, a rocker bar disposed within said channel and having offsets rockingly engaging the rear flange of the channel, said rocker bar projectingfrom one end of said channel and terminating in a transversely disposed finger piece, a U-shaped thrust member rockingly' disposed against the front flange of said channel with its arms in supporting engagement with said rocker bar,. and

L-shaped guards mounted on said rocker bar'and disposed through said openings in said channel to coact with said posts.

2. In a temporary binder the combination with front and rear covers anda back. having hinge connection with said covers, of a base plate mounted on the rear cover adjacent the rear edge thereof and having an. integral inwardly facing channel at its rear edge, posts mounted on said base plate, a rocker bar disposed within said channel and rockingly engaging one flange of the channel, a thrust member rockingly disposed against the other flange of said, channel in supporting engagement with. said rocker bar,v and guards mounted on said rocker bar and disposed through openings in said channel to coast with said posts.

3. In a sheet holder, the combination of. a base plate having an integral channel at its rear edge, posts mounted on said base plate, said channel having openings itstop alined' with said posts, a rocker bar disposed within said channel and having offsets rockingly engaging the rear flange of the channel, said. rocker bar projecting from one end of said channel and terminatitng in a transversely disposed finger piece, a U-shaped thrust member rockinglv disposed against the front flange of said channel with its arms in supporting engagement with said rocker bar, and L-shaped guards mounted on said rocker bar and disposed through said openings in saidv channel to coact' withsaid posts.

4. In a sheet holder, the combination of a base plate having an integral channel at its rear edge,

posts mounted on said base plate, a rocker bar disposed. within said channel and rockingly engagingly one flange of the channel, a thrust member rockingly' disposed against the other flange of said channel in supporting engagement with said rocker bar; and guards mounted on said rocker bar and, disposed through openings in said channel to coact with said posts.

5. A loose sheet holder comprising front and rear covers and a back having hinged connections therewith, of a plate. mounted on the back cover at its inner end and provided with posts, said plate having an integral channel at its rear edge, a rocker bar disposed within said channel in supporting rocking engagement with one of the flanges thereof, a coacting thrust member disposed in rocking engagement. with the opposite flange, and guards mounted on'said rocker memher in coacting relation to said posts.

6. A. sheet holder comprising a base plate pro vided with posts and having an integral channel atits rear edge, a rocker bar disposed within said channel in supporting rocking engagement with one of the flanges thereof, a coacting thrust memher disposed rocking engagement with the. opposite flange, and guards mounted on said rocker member in coacting relation to, said posts.
