PATENT OFFICE f This invention relates to improvements in cans and has particular reference to a closure means for a can adapted to hold coifee, spices or like commodities.

The principal object of the invention is to equip the top of a can with a unique closure arrangement whereby after the can has been opened the same can be readily sealed to preserve, as in the instance of a coffee can, the aroma. of the coffee.

A further object is to provide means of the character described that is simple in construe tlon, economical to manufacture, unique in its arrangement and highly eflicient in use. Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description. However, great inconvenience has been experienced in the use of this type of opening means, and likewise many accidents have happened by the cutting of the fingers on the strip of the can. To overcome these disadvantages and annoyances I have simple turning of the top of the can will bring into register, the scored portion of the under-lid of the can whereby the scored portion can be punched out and the contents readily dispensed.

It will be noted that this auxiliary cover is equipped with a circuit cut-a-way portion 11 so as to present to view certain indicia, such as an arrow with the word Open thereon, the arrow being indicated by the numeral 12. This arrow points to the portion of the can where the opening 10 and scored portion '1 are to be brought into register, so that when the portion is punched out the two registering openings 10' and '1' will be provided through which the contents of the can may be readily dispensed.

As disclosed to advantage in Fig. 1, it will be are of a substantially rectangular shape at their base and are restricted adjacent their top as at 13, the restricted portion allowing the air to enter the can during the pouring operation, thus facilitating the pouring of the contents of the can. After the coffee has been dispensed the auxiliary lid is rotated so that the opening 7 is covered and the contents of the can sealed against escape of the aroma of the coffee. When it is desired to againdispense the coffee the opening 10 isbrought into registry with the opening repeated.

From the foregoing description, connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be obvious that I have devised a unique means for readily pouring the contents of a can and thereafter sealing of the contents has been dispensed. I

In combination with a can and a lid therefor, a scored portion provided in the lid, an auxiliary cover having the central portion thereof cut away to provide a window, said cover rotatable about the can and having an aperture therein' adapted to register with the scored portion of the lid, said scored portion being punched out to provide an opening, whereby the contents of the can can be dispensed through the registering openings, and indicia on said lid being visible through the window of said auxiliary cover and adapted to indicate the registering position of the openings.
