HIS ATTORNEYS Patented June 26, 1934 UNITED STATES SANDAL ErnestPellkofer, Western Springs, Ill., assignor to Charles M. Hartman, Chicago, Ill.
Application March 9, 1934, Serial No. 714,881
4 Claims.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in sandals, and haslfor its 'principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
It is anobject of this invention to provide an improved sandal and, more specifically, to provide an improved iiexible structure for effecting articulation between the instep and toe portions.
It is another object of the invention to provide an improved sandal that is particularly adapted for outdoor use, such as, for example, for wear at bathing beaches, and the like.
It is another object of the invention to provide improved means for effecting articulation between the toe and instep portions, which means will not beaiected or injured by exposure to water. l
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention associated with a sandal of conventional design; n
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sandal and the present invention embodied therein, on line 2--2 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, wherein a practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated, a sandal embodying the present invention is indicated generally at 10 and includes the heel 11,A
instep portion 12, toe portion 13, toe straps 14, and ankle harness 15, all of which may be of conventional design, the instep portion 12 and toe portion 13 being preferably made of light but rigid material such as a suitable kind of light wood provided with an exterior protective coating 20 of paint or the like. The present invention consists in the provision of improved means for Y the toe portion 1 3.
(Cl. Sii-11.5)
which is cemented into or otherwise suitably secured in, the recess 17.
The manner of attaching the section 16 to the toe portion 13 will now be described, and since the same scheme is employed for attaching said section 16 to the instep portion 12, only one description will be given and the reference numerals applied in the description of the connection between section 16 and toe portion 13 will be primed to indicate similar partsinthe connection between section 16 and the instep 12.
The toe portion 13 has a plurality of notches 19, each substantially keystone-shaped, formed therein on the side thereof that is disposed toward the section 16 and tted into these notches 19 are similarly shaped fingers 21 of the section 16 while the section- 16 has notches -22 formed therein into which are fitted the fingers 23 of Each of the lingers 23 is recessed on its upper side, as at 25 (Fig. 3) and extending deeperinto each finger 23 from the recess 25 is a recess 26. The section 16 includes tongues 27 which t into the recesses 25 in the ngers 23 and these tongues 27 include portions 28 which t into the recesses 26 in the fingers 23 so that when viewed from the top, (Fig. 1) a ap appears-to overlap the toe portion 13, as indicated at 29, it being understood that the iiap 29 is formed by the upper sides of the fingers 21 and the' tongues 27 and portions 28; the union of toe portion 13 and instep portion 12 with the section 16 being thus, in part', a dovetail connection with the flaps 29 and 29' overlying and concealing the dovetail joints whichl are cemented together and with the tongues 27 and portions 28 cemented into the recesses 25 and 26 respectively.
The toe straps 14 are attached to the toe por-4 tion 13 and instep portion 12 by nails 30 which are driven through the outermost fingers 21 into the outside fingers 23 (Fig. 2) and the heads 31 of these nails 30 are concealed by the larger heads 32 of shorter nails 33 which are driven into the outermost ngers 21.
In use, the ball of the wearers foot will rest on the rubber cushion 18 andthe flaps 29 and 29 will prevent pinching at the joints between the -toe portion 13 and section 16 and between theinstep portion 12 and section 16, thus en, hancing the comfort to be obtained in wearing a sandal embodying the invention, while the flaps 29 and 29' will prevent water from getting into the dovetail joints. It is apparent, moreover, that the dovetailed ngers which provide connection between the section 16 and the toe and instep portions permit the sandal to flex, in use,
into dotted line position of Fig. 3, while preventing the section 16 from becoming separated or detached from the toe and instep portion to which it is attached. Further assurance against separation of the section 16 from the toe and instep portions is provided by the nails 30, which extend through the outside fingers 21 and are anchored in the adjacent fingers 23.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form' of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A sandal, comprising toe and instep portions, and means providing articulation between the said toe and instep portions, said means comprising a section of flexible material interposed between said portions and having a recess'extending longitudinally thereof, a cushion disposed in said recess, and means providing connection between said` section of flexible material and said toe portion and between said section of flexible material and said instep portion.
2. A sandal, comprising toe and instep portions, and means providing articulation between the said toe and instep portions, said means comprising a section of flexible material interposed between said toe and instep portions and having a recess extending longitudinally thereof, a cushion disposed in said recess, and means providing connection between said section of flexible material and said toe portion and between said section and said instep portion, said connection including fingers on said section and fingers on each of said portions cooperating therewith, said second named fingers having recesses formed in the upper faces thereof, and said section including tongues disposed in said recesses.
3. A sandal, comprising toe and instep portions, and means for providing articulation between said toe and instep portions, said means comprising a section of flexible material interposed between said toe and instep portions and having a recess extending longitudinally thereof, a cushion disposed in said recess, and means providing a dovetail connection between said section of flexible material and said toe portion and between said section and said instep portion, said connection including fingers on said section and fingers on each of said portions cooperating therewith, said second named fingers having recesses formed in the upper faces thereof, and said section including tongues 'disposed in said recesses.
4. A sandal, comprising a toe portion and an instep portion spaced therefrom, toe straps spanning the space between said toe and instep portions, and means providing articulation between said toe and instep portions, said means including a section of flexible material interposed between said toe and instep portions and having a recess extending longitudinally thereof, a cushion disposed in said recess, and means providing dovetail connection between said section and said toe portion and between said section and said instep portion, said connection including ngers on said section and fingers on each of said portions cooperating therewith, said second named fingers having recesses formed in the upper faces thereof said section including tongues disposed in said recesses, and connecting elements inserted through the outermost fingers of said section into lthe adjacent fingers respectively of said toe and instep portions.
