The invention relates to improvements in containers, particularly an envelope adapted to be used for general mailing purposes, and embodving means for including the address card of the recipient of the envelope, or adapted to be used for mail of the fourth class and of the first class if desired.

In disclosing my invention I have shown, for illustrative purposes only, an envelope of a size yo and shape suitable to receive and carry motor vehicle license plates, and means provided to receive and hold an address card which, in this particular instance, may be the motor vehicle registration card which is usually issued annually with the license plates and bears on one side thereof the name and residence of the addressee.

It is strictly understood, however, that the present disclosure of my invention'is only one of the many modifications and innumerable uses of which the invention is capable.

Heretofore in envelopes of the type in question it has been customary to provide two distinct compartments or separate envelope portions which are joined to accommodate the different classes of articles or mail. Furthermore, usually in such constructions there are provided separate and distinct sealing means for each compartrnent or envelope portion. It is obvious that with such arrangement a multiplicity of operations are necessary both in initially sealing and subsequently opening the compartments or envelope portions.

Among the objects of my invention is to provide an envelope of the character described in which but a single closure sealing flap is used and con sequently a single operation of sealing is necessary.

Another object of my invention is to provide an envelope of the character described in which there is a compartment for the contents, such as fourth class mail matter, and means are provided to securely position and hold an address card or, if desired, first class mail matter.

My invention, it will be observed, facilitates saving in envelope material as well as simplification in manufacture and subsequent use thereof.

With these and other objects and advantages in mind, attention is directed to the drawings, inwhich:

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which like numbers indicate like parts, the envelope in its entirety is designated by A and comprises generally a blank of suitable material B, the latter being shown more clearly in Figures 5 and 10.

In the form of the invention disclosed in Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, the blank B consists of a wall portion 10 forming, in this instance, the back of the envelope when folded, the wall portion 11 comprising wing portions 12 and 13, the latter being provided with adhesive 14 at its outer edge, said wall portion 11 forming in this instance the front of the envelope when folded, a permanent end closure 15 provided with adhesive 16, and a closure sealing flap 17 pro ided with adhesive 18 on its outermost inner edge.

In constructing the envelope from the said blank, the wall portion 11 is formed by folding wing portion 12 inwardly and then the wing portion 13 thereupon, and by means of the adhesive 14 said wing portions are securely joined. The end closure 15 is permanently secured upon the ends of the said wing portions by means of adhesive 16 as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

It will be observed that the wing portion 12 is of such length that its outer edge extends to a point adjacent the line of folding of the opposing wing portion 13 and wall portion 10, the purpose of which will later become apparent.

In the form of the invention disclosed in Figures 6 to 10 inclusive, the blank B consists of the wall portion 19 forming, when folded, the back of the envelope in this instance, wall portion 20 forming, when folded, the front of the envelope in this instance, permanent end closures 21 provided with adhesive 22, and a closure sealing flap 23 provided with adhesive 24 on its outermost inner edge. To construct the envelope from the said blank, the wall portions 19 and 20 are folded upon each other, and the permanent end closures 21 are folded upon and adhesively secured to the wall portion 19.

Attention is directed to Figures 1, 2, 6 and 7, and particuarlyto the wall portions 11 and 20 wherein are provided windows or apertures 25 and slits 26 which, when the blanks in the disclosures of Figures 5 and 10 are folded, appear in the fronts of the envelopes.

The configuration of the slit 26 will be noted as having its ends cut away or substantially rounded as at 27 and the free or lower ends 28 of the said cut-away ends or corners extending slightly below the line of the main portion of the slit 26, when observed in Figures 1, 2, 6 and 7.

The slit 26 is substantially parallel with the sides of the envelope and is disposed relative to the bottom fold of the envelope in order to accommodate the address card or the like, designated by C, which it is desired to use, observing at all times the fact that the upper corners 29 of said address card or the like when inserted into the slit 26 protrude beyond the cut-away ends or corners 2'7 thereof.

The window or aperture 25 is disposed between the slit 26 and the bottom of the envelope, and is so positioned as toallow the printed or written matter on the address card to be easily read.

It is manifest that the size of the slit 26 and window or aperture 25, as well as their positions relative to the bottom of the envelope, may be varied, depending upon the size and shape of the address card or the like, since the lower edge of Lsaid address card to be correctly held should rest in the fold at the bottom of the envelope and the upper edge thereof be substantially even with the line of the slit, while the upper corners thereof protrude beyond the cut-away or roundfed ends or comer portions of the slit.

In the form of the invention disclosed in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, the lower part of the wing 'portion 12 is disposed behind the slit and window and provides a backing for the address card and separates the same from the contents of the container, while in the form of the invention disclosed in Figures 6 to 10 inclusive, the contents of the container provides the backing for the address card.

In effect, therefore, the slit with this novel configuration, in conjunction with the adjacent structure of the envelope, provides a pocket which positions and holds the type of matter for which it is intended.

Referring to Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, it will be noted that the closure sealing flap 17 is at one end of the envelope and the slit and window are adjacent said end, the free or outer edge of the flap falling substantially midway the ends of the slit and the shape of the flap being such, when sealed, as to expose the window or aperture to view. By means of the adhesive at the edge of the flap it is secured on both sides of the slit and the latter is thereby tightly closed.

Referring to Figures 6 to 10 inclusive, the cloisure sealing flap 23 is at one side or the top of the envelope and the slit and window are substantially central of the ends of the envelope. The free or outer edge of the flap falls below the slit but above the window when in closed position, and it will be observed that the said edge covers a portion of the slit between the cut-away or rounded ends thereof. The adhesive at the edge of the flap secures the same onboth sides of the slit and consequently said slit is tightly closed.

It will be noted that the adhesive at the edge of the flap does not in either form of the invention come into contact with the address card or the like.

The use of the containers will be obvious, in thatthe contents to be shipped are placed in the envelope, the address card or the like inserted into the slit, and the closure sealing flap adhesively secured to the wall portion. Both the contents of the envelope and the address card will thus be enclosed for mailing.

By merely opening the closure sealing flap in the usual manner the contents of the envelope and the address card will be exposed and can be easily withdrawn.

It is understood that there are various changes and modifications in the invention which are contemplated within the scope and spirit of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A container of the class described having a mouth to receive the contents proper thereof, one.

wall of the container having a slit, said wall having a window adjacent said slit, supporting means on the container spaced from and cooperating with the slit to fixedly position behind said window insertable and removable matter separate from the contents proper of the container, and a closure flap for closing the mouth of the container and overlying said slit and said matter retained thereby without obstructing said window.

2. A container of the class described having a mouth to receive the contents proper thereof,

one wall of the container having a slit, said wall having a window adjacent said slit, supporting means onthe container spaced from and cooperating with the slit to fixedly position behind said window insertable and removable matter separate from the contents proper of the container, said slit extending longitudinally and laterally with respect to said supporting means, and a closure flap for closing the mouth of the container and overlying said slit and said matter retained thereby without obstructing said window.

3. A container of the envelope type having a mouth to receive the contents proper thereof, one wall of the envelope having a slit spaced from one fold line of the envelope, said wall having a window between said slit and fold line, said slit and fold line cooperating to fixedly position behind said window insertable and removable matter separate from the contents proper of the envelope, and a. closure flap for closing the mouth of the envelope and overlying said slit and said matter retained thereby without obstructing said window.

4. A container of the class described having a mouth to receive the contents proper thereof, one wall of the container having a slit, said wall having a window adjacent said slit, supporting means on the container spaced from and cooperating with the slit to fixedly position behind said window insertable and removable matter separate from the contents proper of the container, said supporting means comprising a fold line and said slit extending longitudinally and laterally with respect to the supporting means, and a closure flap for closing the mouth of the envelope and overlying said slit and said matter retained thereby without obstructing said window.

5. A container of the envelope type having a mouth to receive the contents proper thereof, a wall of the envelope having a slit communieating with the interior thereof, a fold line of the envelope spaced from and cooperating with the slit to fixedly position insertable and removable matter separate from the contents proper of the container, said wall having a window between said slit and fold line for displaying said separate matter and. a closure flap on the edge of the envelope opposite to the fold line for closing the mouth of the container and overlying said slit and said matter retained thereby without obstructing said window.
