IMPROVEMENT IN GAR-COUPLING PINS! Speeificatinnlorming art of Letters Patent N0.
198,937, (latedJa1i1iary 8, 1878; applicution file cl November 24, 1877.
T0 all whom it mag; concern:
Be 'it known that I, LAURA J. GOTT, 0f La Grange, in the county of Lorain and State 0f Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Coupling Pins; and I (10 hereby deelare the following to be a full, elear, ancl exaet deseription 0f the invention, such as will enable others skillecl in the art 130 whieh it pertains 130 make and use lt, reference being had to the aceompanying drawings, whieh f0rm part 0f this speeifieation.
My invention relates t0 car-eoupling pins; and it consists in the followingspeeified coustruction ancl eombination 0f arts,
In the drawingS, Figure 1 is a Side elevati0n 0f my deviee, and -Fig. 2 a longitudinal section 0f the same.
A is the body 01 pin proper, and it is pierced through its length with an opening f0r the acedinmodation 0f the 1'0d B, which terminates above the pin A in ahandle, knb, 01 any deviee f0rproperly manipulating and. operating said 1'0d B. This rod passes down thro.ugh the pin A, and suspends at its lower end the loeking-piece O. .This loekingpieee is a plate 0f metal 01 other suitable material, pivoted and attaehed t0 the lower end 0f the 1 0d B in such a manner as that, when hanging freely, it shall offer 110 impecliment t0 the withdrawal 0f the pin from the ear-huffer; but when the rod B is .drawn up the said loeking-pieee O, by its natural impingement against the b0tt0m of the car-buffer, shall be thrown int0 the positi0n indieated l0y the d0tted lines in the drawings, whereby an impediment is 0ffered t0. the eseape 0f -the pin A, thus se euring it in its eoupling position against any possibility ofiaeeid.ntal disl0dgment er misplaeement.
In qrder t0make the r0d B longitudinally adjustable witlu'n the pin A, and. cause the tw0 t0 be maint'ained in such relative positi0n, I provide serew-threads upon the upper body 0f said 1'0d, whieh engage with a eorresponding serew-thread made in the upper ortion 0f the opening 0f the pin. This eonstruetion allows tl1e rod ancl pi11 t0 be adjustment relative t0 eaeh 0ther, so as t0 cause thefreely-swinging pieee O t0 bebrought np against the bottom 0f tl1e buffer er drawhead and thus seeul1ely 100l the pin against withdrawal 0r disledgment until the r0d is lowered from such engaged position.
I d0 n0t narr0wly limit myself t0 the peeuliar means f0r aeeomplishing this purpose, as other eonstruetion ean readily be substituted attaehed either t0 tl1e piu 01 the rocl, and the serew-threarls above mentioned be dispensed with, such a spring being made t0 latch and seeure the r0d in any desired longitudinal adjustment relative t0 the pi n, and being indedraw-heacl.
The tilting deviee, being only seeured t0 the extremityof the 1'0d whieh pr0jeets through and below the lower end 0f the pin, is aclapted 110 swing freely fr0m said pivotal point 0f attachment, am]. t0 be entirely free fr0m engagement with the pin. 1
This invention I have elesigned as an improvement up0n a prior deviee 0f 1nine, upon whieh United States Letters Patent N0. 149,7 43, of date April 14, 1874, were granted and issued t0 me.
I elaim- The eombination, with the perfomatecl c0upling-pin, 0f the 10d passing thr0ugh it and provicled. at its 10W61? projeeting extremity with the tilting piece O, swinging freely there- LAURA JANE GOTT.
