vligures 1 to 20 illustrate several constructional 153 forms of-such a trick novelty. i -t Y g In the rst construetional form shown in Figures l yand 2" an imitationof a match-box is chosen as the container, the outer'slfiding case a being made without the bottom wall for making thel 2 bottom of the inner box Umore readily accessible,
the boxr b which is open at the top by means of lateral fiangesc. In the inner box a clockwork mechanism d is disposed, the? last shaft e of which rotating at the greatest angular velocity has a friction Wheel f mounted Von it. Against the latter isheld so as to be inoperative associati'on therewith a flint i which is heid-in a sleeveV ing! nnger'nof the spring projects into the interior Y of the boxlinsuchv amann'er that, when the bei; `is closed, thearresting ngernfbearsfagainst the leaf spring k springs out through the opening Z 4 leases the friction. wheel ,fandthe latter scrapes over the -flnt which is held. against it by spring action, ,thusproducing a strong 'shower' of sparks.
For increasing the'humorous effect and in order ticabl'e, `the inner slide box b is preferablylcovered on itsxupper .side with a covering plateforepre-f senting'matcheawhich covering plate isQprovid- 1 ed only at the place beloww'hich -the hint bears 50' against-the friction` wheel With'an opengp,v

In this 1 casethe hinged lid is provided with an arresting @3i spring which, when the hinged lid vq is in theand prevents it from running down. A
I In the third constructional forrnshownin Fig"` ures 5 and 6 the varrangement of' a match-box is 1- 15" substantially retained, thelonl'ydiiference being that the outer sliding 'casco-*is provided yonthe some distance from itsend with a lateral open'`v ing 1', through which the projection m `of the'ij arresting spring V7c can spring out inthe manner shcwn'in Figure 6 whenthematch lcontainer b. is slid upwards or to the left, thereby liberating the clockwork mecha'nisnfiv The slidingbox a is in this case provided on Vits rupper side with a suitable opening 's which; when the match con-Y tainer is inthe closed position, isv covered by the ycovering platefo, but which, when the matchboXris in the? position in which the projection-mof the arresting spring csprings outward, is'uncovered and allows the shower of sparks toemergef Owing to this arrangement the l spark pr'oducing device becomes operative irrespectivefof whether the match container b is pushed'in one' direction -until the projection m of thearresting spring csprings outwards over the end fof the sliding case, or whether the match {eontainer is pushed inthe other' direction until the projection Y m of the arresting spring 1c can spring out through thel opening r in the side wall of the sliding 315i case ai Y i `In place ofthe arresting spring Ic which springs' out-through openings l,` q'inthe walls of the in ner'container andthe sliding: cases-a twoarmed lever V20`1r`nay be'used, as 'shown in the constructional form of Fig.'6a, which with "its elongated transverse slot 2t is adapte'd-'toturn onther pin 22A 'and is lcapable of lateralfdisplacement-` Theytwo-armed lever .20 isprovided on its inner side with the brake block 24 which coacts with me45' container'beingjpushed in onedire'ction or the other, the pressure of the teeth of the pinionzs si trigger 6 bearing against lthe frictionewhcel f.l

or out of the opening s. The arresting device for the clockworkmechanism isrin this case abrake blockl c'rprovided" on the inside. of the sliding case a, whichA block in the closed position `forces theap n againstthe friction wheel f and thereby prevents the wound up clockwork mechanism from running down. The constructional form shown in Figures.9 and 10.;is made in imitation of apocket lighter,l in which by operating a pressure knob the spring cover is to be released. rIn this case the spring cover is connected rigidlyto Vthe casing a in whichY the clockwork mechanism d with the iiint i and the friction wheel f are housed. The sliding .box a has a window sj the clockwork mechanism tion wheel f and the flint i an opening p forming a sham muzzle is provided in the casing a, through which the shower of sparks can emerge, on the' trigger being pressed.
In the tin container shown in Figs. 13 and 14 vthe arrangement is such that in the bottom part IB of the'tin the clockwork mechanism d with the iiint z' is housed, and a slip-on lid II is pro- Y vided with an opening p, which by being suitably turned can'be brought in register with thef place where the friction wheeland the fiintare in contact with one'another. Against the friction wheel the brake block n of the' arresting spring -7f:` Ioea rs, which is held in position by the slip-on lidjbut on the latter being turned can spring outwards through'an opening l in the bottom part and an opening 1' in the lid, thus releasing the friction 'wheel from the arresting spring andV allowing the sparks to emerge through the open- If a shower of sparks is to emerge without displacing the'slipon lid Ilwith respect to the bot-v tom part I 0 of the tin, the arrangement is made such, in accordance with Figures 15 and 16, that Van arresting 'spring II2 whichis fixed to the bot- 'mounted on a crank leverl I5 which is vrotatable about tliepin I4 and which bears the pressure knob I6 extending through an opening I1 in the tin'and isrheld in the closed position under the infiuence of a helical spring I8. By depressing `the knob IS the lever I54 is caused to rock so far towards the arresting spring I2 that not only is the opening p uncovered, but by a cam-like exf tension I9 of the covering disc I3 the` arresting spring I2 is forced asidemtolsuch an extent thatv the clockwork mechanism `can run down and the shower of sparks emergev through the uncovered opening p.
The principle underlying the invention can of coursealso be applied to other containers in the form of boxes .or tins. Thus for instance the clockwork mechanism with thev spark-producing device could be housed in a small photographic apparatus, in such vamanner that the sparks emerge through the shutter `opening when the said openingv is uncovered by actuating a lever likegthat. cfa lens shutter and the arresting springis liftedfrom the. friction wheel.
4In place of a containervin the form of a box or, tinV any. othergshape'can of course be used,`
for yinstance'ahollow cylindrical container of the shape of a lwriting implement, such as a fountain pen, a pencil or the, like, as shown in Figures v17 and 18. In this constructional form` the `spark producing devicefis formedby a Iiint z mounted at the upper end of' the writing implement, the'friction wheel beingfreplaccd by a scraper 26. The latter is mounted on a bar 21 which is guided so as to slide in slots of the discsv 28, 29 mounted in the barrel aand' has in the neighborhood of its lower end an arresting shoulder 30whichis adapted to 4engage, under the,
guiding disc. -The guiding bar 21, which is pro'- videdrw'ith Aan outwardly extendingguiding pin 3|` for movingv it into its locked position is under the influence of a` helical spring 32- which seeks to draw I the guiding `bar `laterally and upwards.4v Y Inside the barrel a leafspring 33 is'mountedhat the end of which is an outwardly' extending lm obA 'WheeL a resilient arresting bar which bears 34, which bears with a pressure pin 35 against the guiding bar 2l. If, when the writing implement is used in the normal manner, the linger v is laid onthe knob 34, the pressure pin 35 releases the retaining shoulder 3i) from the disc 28 and the guiding bar is drawn rapidly upwards, the
scraper 25 sliding over the :dint i andvcausing the p ed the friction wheel against which the flintV z' bears, which is guided in the sleeve g under the action of a spring. In this constructional form the arrangement is such that on'the end of the friction wheel shaft e anV arresting lever 38 is mounted, which ,in the'v Vclosed position bears against the upper Wall of the sliding casing a and thereby prevents the clockwork mechanism from running down. On the box b being pushed out of the sliding casing a to such an extent that the arresting arm 38 comes in front of the transverse edge-lying nearest to it of the sliding casing a, the clockwork mechanism will be'released and the sparks will be produced.
