UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS J. ATWOOD, OF WVATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE PLUME 8t ATW OOD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN- LAM P-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,0] 5, dated February 5, 1878; application filed September 17, 1877.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, Lnwrs J. A'rwoon, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamps, of which the following is a specification:
Lamps have been made in which there has been an elevated air-distributer near the upper end of the wick-tube, supported by wires which are L-shaped, and on which the lower end of the chimney rests.
My invention relates to this general class of burners. In the burners heretofore made the air-distributer supports a deflector, and there are tongues upon the deflector, entering mortises through the air-distributer, and the edge of the air-distributer is scalloped.
In my present improvement the lamp-burner is made with a hinged cone, to maintain a firm connection to the air-distributer, but to allow the cone to be turned back to give access to the wick-tube and air-distributor for cleaning and lighting, and the edges of the air-distributer are circular and slotted at intervals, to form springs that set against the interior of the chimney.
I am aware that these springs have been used at the base of the deflector, and that a hinged deflector is also old. In my lamp the combination of the parts produces a superior burner, that is more convenient for lighting and cleaning than those heretofore made.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the burner, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same with the deflector turned back.
- The base of the burner, with the screw a, ratchet-cap b, wick-tube c, and wick-raiser d, are of usual character.
The elevated air-distributer e is near the upper end of the wick-tube, and is supported by the L-shaped wires f to the base of the burner, and these wires also support the chimney by forming a rest for its lower end, as heretofore employed.
Around the air-d'istributer is the range of springs h, formed by the sheet metal of the air-distributer turned downwardly in a conoidal form, the periphery being circular and intersected by numerous radial incisions, that divide the metal into springs around the rim to the air-distributer.
The air-distributer supports the cone or deflector Zr, which is hinged at i, so as to swing up or down, and there is a steadying-tongue, 0, that passes through a mortise in the airdistributer.
The burner constructed as aforesaid is very strong, cheap, reliable, and easily kept clean, and none of the parts are liable to become detached.
I claim as my invention The combination, in a lamp-burner, of an elevated air-distributer, supports for the same, forming also an open base for the chimney, a circular range of springs around the air-distributer, with incisions between them, a cone or deflector, and a hinge connecting the same to the air-distributer, the parts being constructed and arranged as specified.
Signed by me this 10th day of September, A. D. 1877.
L. J. ATWOOD.
