Patented May 28, 1935 [UNITED PATENT}QFFICE This invention relates to a device designed to be positioned over the sole of a shoe-orboot, the
, device being provided with-meansto bite into ice or other slipperysurfaces'to insure against the person using the device slipping while walking oversuchsurfaces. I i
An important object of the invention is'to provide device of this character which "may be usedby firemen or carpenters while standing or walking over slippery roofs of buildings, the device affording means to prevent slipping of the A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this charactenwhich may "be adjustedto various widths and lengths, adapting the device for use on boots and shoes of various sizes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily secured on the foot of the user, in
such a. way as to insure against displacement of the device, while in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as, the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it
being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a creeper constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the creeper.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device comprises a heel section 5 and a toe section 6, the heel section comprising a wide heel engaging portion 1 and a forwardly projecting portion 8 adapted to engage under the instep of the boot or shoe to which the device is secured.
This forwardly projecting section 8 is formed with an elongated opening 9 that extends throughout the entire length of the section 8, the lower surface of the forwardly projecting surface being provided with teeth In, for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described.
Ears ll extend upwardly from the heel engaging portion 1 of the heel section, and afford of various widths.
means whereby the strap I2 is secured" to the heel section 5, the strap I! being of a construction'to engage over the instep of the user, se-
curing the heel section in position.
7 Extending downwardly from the bottom of the heel engaging portionl, are spikes l3, which spikes maybe secured in the heel engaging portion 1, byriv'ets or other suitable means.
The toe section comprises members 14 which are wide at their forward ends,- and of lengths to extend an appreciable distance over the forwardly projecting section 8 of the heel-section 5, when the *t'oesection is secured to the heel section "5, thereby providing for an adjustment of thesections with respect to'each 'othen'to lengtheno'r shortenthe device.
As shown, these members l4 have their inner ends connected by means of the bolt 15, so that pivotal movement of the members M will be permitted, allowing the wide forward ends of the members l4, to be moved towards or away from each other so that the toe section may be adjusted laterally and positioned on boots or shoes Secured to the toe section, by means of the bolt I5 is a washer l6, which washer is formed with teeth on its upper surface, which teeth cooperate with the teeth ll) of the forwardly projecting section 8, holding the heel section and toe section against movement with respect to each other, after an adjustment has been made. A
nut I1 is positioned on the bolt [5, and is adapted gether. I
Pivotally secured to one of the members ll of the toe section, by means of the bolt 24, is a bar l8, which bar is formed with an elongated opening 19 disposed near the free end thereof, which bar is adapted to accommodate the bolt 20 that extends from the adjacent member 14, there being provided a nut 2| on the bolt 20 engaging and securing the bar [8 in its positions of adjustment.
The reference character designates a washer positioned on the bolt 20, the washer having teeth adapted to cooperate with the teeth 21 .of the bar I 8, holding the bar and toe members, against lateral movement, after an adjustment has been made.
Spikes indicated by the reference character 22 extend downwardly from the members l4 of the toe section, and are adapted to bite into the surface on which the device is being used, preventing slipping.
In order that the person's foot on which the I to clamp the heel section and toe section todevice is secured, will be held against lateral movement, metallic foot engaging members 23 are provided, which members 23 are made integral with the members M of the toe section, and curve upwardly and inwardly from the upper surfaces thereof. These members 23 also provide members to which the straps 25 are secured, which straps secure the toe section of the creeper to the foot of the user.
From the foregoing it will beseen that due to the construction shown and described, the-device may be readily and easily positioned 'over a'boot or shoe, and readily adjusted so that it will prop: erly fit such boot or shoe.
After the straps have been secured aroundithe boot or shoe of the user, the creeper will be held against displacement and the person using the device may walk over icy yorslippermsnrgfaoes without danger of slipping.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed'is: t I
n1 i v p ri a hee sec ion hav g an elongated opening and having teeth, formed on the lower side thereof, a toe section'embodying laterally adjustable members, a. bolt pivotally connecting the members, a, washer on, the bolt andhaving teeth adapted to engage the teeth, of the heel section whenthe bolt is secured in position holding the heel, and toe sections in their positions of adjustment. ,7
2. In an ice creeper, a heel section, saidheel section having an elongated opening, atoe section comprising laterally adjnstable members, a bolt pivotally connecting the laterally. adjustable members, said bolt passing through the elongated opening and adapted to secure the heel section and toe section together, whereby the sections may be adjusted to lengthen or shorten the creeper, and means for securing the members forming the toe section in the positions of their adjustment.
3. In an ice creeper, a heel section and a toe section, a forwardly projecting narrow section forming a part of the heel section and having an elongated opening, teeth formed on the lower surface of the forwardly projecting section, said toe section comprising a, pair of laterally adjustable members, a bolt pivotally connecting the members at their inner ends, said bolt extending through the elongated opening, a washer having teeth; mounted on the bolt, said bolt adapted to exert pressure on the washer, whereby the teeth'of the washer are brought into engagement with they teeth of the, forwardly projecting section, holding the heel section and toe section together, and spikes extending from the heel secion-and oe section V f 4. An, ice; creeper comprising aheel sectionand a toe; section, said heel section having an elongated opening, means, for pivotallyxconnecting the sections, said means including a bolt carried by the toe section and disposed withinthe elon gated opening whereby the creeper ,may be lengthened or shortened, said toe section com prising pivotally, connected, members, a bar connecting the membersof. the toe sectionand means for adjustably securing the bar to one of the members of the toe sectionwhereby the members of the toe section are held in various positions of adjustment.
