This invention relates to a box formed of pasteboard or other semi-rigid material and particularly to a construction of such box having two relatively foldable parts forming an enclosed box of substantial rigidity The primary object of the present invention relates to the` provision of means whereby a box of the general typeindicated above is provided which is locked in its closed position; that is, by the interfltting of parts it is held closed and can only be opened by its partial destruction, unless considerable care is exercised. The box is also provided with a handle related in ya novel fashion to the locked means so that the box may be most readily prepared from a simple type of blank.
Further objects relating to details of constructionvwill be apparent from the following description read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which one form of the improved box may be made;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the box after partial assembly;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the finished box;
Figure 4 is a plan View showing a modified type of blank for a larger box;
'Figure 5 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the modiiied box prior to complete assembly; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the finished modified box. i
Referring iirst to Figures 1 3 inclusive, the
box of this modilication is formed of a single blank which provides the faces 2 and 4, the bottom 6, the side flaps 8, which in the iinished box overlap, and top flaps I0, which inpart provide the top wall of the box. These various parts are defined in the blank by scored lines, which permit easy folding when assembly into the finished box takes place. E Carried by the upper end of the Wall 4 is a top iiap I2, the function of which with the wall 4 consists of a scored line. Undercuts extending inwardly to points I4 separate the ends of the flap I2 from the wall 4.
At the top of the wall 2 and-joined thereto along a scored line is a flap I6, which at its ends carries iiaps I8 hinged thereto along suitably scored lines. The inner ends of the flaps I8 are beveled as indicated atv to the points 22 inwardly of which undercuts 24 extend, separating the points 22 from the body of the iiap I6. 'I'he central portion 26 of thel iiap I6 is deiined from the ends thereof preferably by a series of perforations 28 so that finally thiscentral portion of the iiap may be turned upwardly to provide a handle, the flap 30, which is separated from 25 along three of its sides, being joined thereto along a scored line 32 so that it may be turned upwardly to provide a convenient grip which will not cut the hand of the carrier.
The distance between the points 22 is less than the distance between the inner points I4 of the undercuts between the flap I2 and the wall. 4. Consequently, when partially assembled, as indicated in Figure 2, substantial pressure must be exerted to cause the aps I8 to move fully inwardly and contact with the ends of the nap I2. The bailies 20' ride against the inner ends I4 of the undercuts, causing some slight distortion of the parts until the undercuts 24 lock with I4. Following this interengagement of the undercuts, it will be obvious that without careful manipulation the box cannot be opened except by destruction of some of the parts adjacent the interlock.
Up to this time the central portion 26 of the flap may remain undetached from the ends of the flap I6. In this 'case the closed box is in condition for shipment. When the box is to be carried, tearing is effected along the perforations 28, so that the central portion 26 may be brought to an upright position, as viewed in Figure 3. By turning the flap 30 a suitable opening for the fingers is provided together with a handle having a rounded edge which will facilitate carrying.
In the modication of Figures 4, 5 and 6 the parts corresponding to those of Figure 1 are similarly designated. This-box, in fact, differs only from that of Figure l in its larger size, which makes desirable a somewhat modiiied handle ar. rangement and different relative dimensions of the interlocking arrangement.
In addition to the flaps II) associated with the Wall 4, there are provided inwardly extending flaps 33 to provide more secure end assemblies; these iiaps -eventually extending against the wall 4.
The iiap I6 has the central portion thereof formed as a handle fiap 34 defined by undercuts 36 of the character indicated, providing inwardly extending projecting portions 38 from the ap I6 into the opening which appears when the iiap 34 is turned upwardly to form a handle, this turning of the iiap taking place along scored lines 40. A iiap 42, defined by cuts along three sides is adapted to pivot about the scored line 44, forming its junction with the flap 34.
The top nap I2 carried by the wall 4 is provided with a handle ap 46 defined therefrom by cut 48 formed as shown, to provide projections 50 on the handle iiap. The iiap 46 folds about scored lines 52 and is provided with an opening 54 corresponding to the flap 42, which may be turned thereover in the finished box.
The assembly so far as the interlocking of the undercuts 24 and I4 is concerned is similar to that of the previous arrangement. In addition, the parts are locked together by the interengagement of the projections 38 and 50, as illustrated in Figure 6. The dimensions are such that the inner corners of the opening, formed by turning upwardly the handle flap 34, are spaced approximately the same distance as the lowermost ends of the side edges of the flap 46; in other words, the distance between the inwardly directed projections 38 is less than the distance between the outer portions of the projections 50. As a result, during assembly some distortion is necessary, but nally the parts assume the relationships illustrated in Figure 6, so that the two flaps are held together to form a unitary handle. Further maintenance of the two handle parts in juxtaposition is secured by the turning of the flap 42 through the opening 54 whereby it not only forms a lock, but a convenient grip.
It will be clear from the above that numerous variations of the specic form of the invention may be made without departing from the spirit thereof as defined inthe following claims.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A box including two portions one of which overlaps the other to close the box, each 0i said portions having a nap, said iiaps being arranged to assume overlapping relationship when the box is closed, a handle formed by part of one of the 1| to assume overlapping relationship when the box 2q is closed, a handle formed by part of one of the flaps, and means whereby the outer ap is locked to the inner one, said means including members carried by the outer flap having portions engaging the inside of the inner flap, said members 2g comprising undercut iiaps integral with the outer flap.
