Abstract
Description
- This application claims priority to prior Japanese patent application JP 2004-112528, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
- This invention relates to a card connector for use in connecting a card to a connection object.
- Heretofore, various types of card connectors have been proposed. One of the card connectors is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,320,552 and has a structure in which a card is locked by a cover member. However, in a state where the card is inserted, the cover member is not sufficiently locked. Accordingly, depending upon a magnitude or a direction of a mechanical shock, the cover may possibly be opened. In this event, connection of the card may not be maintained.
- Another card connector is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,718,609 and has a structure in which terminals are connected to each other by a spring member arranged at a cover rail portion. In this case, however, ground connection in a circuit is obtained at a single point. With this structure, a shielding effect is low and EMI protection is insufficient.
- It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a card connector which is capable of preventing a cover member from being accidentally opened.
- It is another object of this invention to provide a card connector which has an enhanced shielding effect by increasing the number of ground connection points between a cover member and a connection object.
- It is still another object of this invention to provide a card connector which is capable of easily providing EMI protection.
- Other objects of the present invention will become clear as the description proceeds.
- According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a card connector for connecting a card to a connection object, the connector comprising a base member, a conductive contact held by the base member, and a cover member faced to the base member and adapted to press the card towards the contact, the cover member being slidable along the base member in first and second directions opposite to each other, the base member having a locking member for locking the cover member when the cover member slides in the first direction and an elastic member for urging the cover member in a direction away from the base member, the locking member having a locking portion to be engaged with the cover member to inhibit movement of the cover member in the second direction when the cover member slides in the first direction, and a first terminal portion to be connected to the connection object, the elastic member having a press-contact portion to be contacted with the cover member and a second terminal portion to be connected to the connection object.

- The card connector illustrated in the figures comprises a plurality of
conductive contacts 11 and 12, an insulating base member of a generally flat shape, i.e., abase insulator 13 holding thecontacts 11 and 12, and acover member 25 for pressing acard 21 towards thecontacts 11 and 12 to bring thecard 21 into contact with thecontacts 11 and 12. As thecard 21, a chip card, an IC card, an SIM card, or the like may be used. - Each of the contacts 11 has an extending end extending from the
base insulator 13 in a first direction A1. Each of thecontacts 12 has an extending end extending from thebase insulator 13 in a second direction A2 opposite to the first direction A1. The extending ends of thecontacts 11 and 12 are faced to each other in the first and the second directions A1 and A2. The contacts 11 are arranged along thebase insulator 13 and spaced from one another in a third direction A3 perpendicular to the first direction A1. Likewise, thecontacts 12 are arranged along thebase insulator 13 and spaced from one another in the third direction A3. Each of the contacts 11 has a contacting portion 11 a protruding above one surface or an upper surface of thebase insulator 13 and aterminal portion 11 b extending on the downside of thebase insulator 13. Likewise, each of thecontacts 12 has a contactingportion 12 a protruding above the upper surface of thebase insulator 13 and aterminal portion 12 b extending on the downside of thebase insulator 13. The contactingportions 11 a and 12 a are brought into contact with a plurality of contacting portions 21 a of thecard 21 when thecard 21 is placed on thebase insulator 13. - On the upside of the
base insulator 13, acover member 25 formed by a conductive plate is provided. As shown inFIGS. 9 through 14 , thecover member 25 has a pair ofshaft portions 25 d integrally formed, a pair ofrail portions card 21 to be inserted, and a pair of flange-like lockedportions 25 a each of which is formed at a part of each of therail portions cover member 25 in the third direction A3 to be locked and fixed to thebase insulator 13. Each of the lockedportions 25 a has alock hole 25 g. Each of the lockedportions 25 a may protrude inside thecover member 25 in the third direction. - The
cover member 25 has one end portion and the other end portion in the first and the second directions A1 and A2, respectively. In the following, the one end portion and the other end portion will be referred to as first and second end portions, respectively, for simplicity of description. Thecover member 25 is held by a bearing structure (which will later be described) to be rotatable and slidable with respect to thebase insulator 13. Specifically, the second end portion of thecover member 25 is held by the bearing structure so that thecover member 25 is rotatable around a center axis extending in the third direction A3 and slidable in the first and the second directions A1 and A2. - The
base insulator 13 has a pair oflocking members 31 made of a metal material and anelastic member 37 comprising a long flat spring having conductivity and elasticity. Thelocking members 31 and theelastic member 37 are disposed on lateral sides in the third direction A3 so as not to interfere with thecard 21 to be mounted. Thebase insulator 13 is further provided with a pair ofcard guide portions card 21 to be mounted. Thecard guide portions - Each of the
locking members 31 has a claw-like locking portion 31 a and afirst terminal portion 31 b having a shape suitable for soldering. The lockingportion 31 a is for engaging with thelock hole 25 g of thecover member 25 so that thecover member 25 is locked in the second direction A2 and in an opening direction (depicted by an arrow 11 inFIG. 3 ). The firstterminal portion 31 b is for being connected by soldering to a connection object 50 such as a printed circuit board. - The
elastic member 37 has a press-contact portion 37 a in the form of a leaf spring, a secondterminal portion 37 b having a shape suitable for soldering, and a first connectingportion 37 c which will later be described. The press-contact portion 37 a is elastically contacted with thecover member 25 in the vicinity of the second end portion to urge thecover member 25 in the opening direction when thecover member 25 is in a closed state. Thesecond terminal portion 37 b is a part to be connected by soldering to the connection object 50. - The
cover member 25 is rotated in a closing direction (depicted by an arrow I inFIG. 3 ) so as to sandwich thecard 21 on thebase insulator 13. Thereafter, thecover member 25 is made to slide in the first direction (seeFIG. 3 ). Then, thecover member 25 is engaged with the lockingmembers 31 to be locked in the closed state. In this case, the lock holes 25 g of thecover member 25 and the lockingportions 31 a of the lockingmembers 31 are engaged with each other to be locked. This state (locked state) is illustrated inFIGS. 1 and 2 . - Thus, the
cover member 25 is locked by the lockingmembers 31 to be inhibited from movement in the second direction A2. Therefore, even if an apparatus equipped with the connector is subjected to heavy mechanical shock due to fall or the like, thecover member 25 is prevented from being accidentally opened. - When the
cover member 25 is pressed against thebase insulator 13, thecover member 25 is unlocked. Thereafter, thecover member 25 is made to slide in the second direction A2. Then, thecover member 25 is openable. - Referring to FIGS. 15 to 17 in addition, a process of unlocking the
cover member 25 from the locked state illustrated inFIGS. 1 and 2 will be described in detail. - In the locked state in
FIG. 15 , the lock holes 25 g of the lockedportions 25 a of thecover member 25 are engaged with and locked by the lockingportions 31 a of the lockingmembers 31. In order to release thecover member 25, thecover member 25 is pressed as illustrated inFIG. 16 . Then, the lockingportions 31 a of the lockingmembers 31 are disengaged from the lock holes 25 g of the lockedportions 25 a of thecover member 25. Thereafter, thecover member 25 is slightly moved in the second direction A2 as illustrated inFIG. 17 . As a result, thecover member 25 is released from the locked state. - Referring to
FIGS. 18 through 20 in addition, the bearing structure will be described. - At the second end portion of the
base insulator 13, ametal piece 41 is arranged. Themetal piece 41 has a second connectingportion 41 a to be contacted with thecover member 25 and a thirdterminal portion 41 b to be connected by soldering to the connection object 50. Thebase insulator 13 may be provided with one or more similar metal pieces. - The
base insulator 13 has a pair of bearingportions 13 g formed at the second end portion and spaced from each other in the third direction A3. At one of the bearingportions 13 g (will be called a first bearing portion), the first connectingportion 37 c of theelastic member 37 and the second connectingportion 41 a of themetal piece 41 are disposed. At thefirst bearing portion 13 g, the first connectingportion 37 c and the second connectingportion 41 a are positioned towards the first and the second directions A1 and A2, respectively. Thus, by a combination of thebase insulator 13, the first connectingportion 37 c, and the second connectingportion 41 a, thefirst bearing portion 13 g is formed substantially as a long hole extending long in the first and the second directions A1 and A2. - At the other bearing
portion 13 g (will be called a second bearing portion), a third connecting portion 51 a of anothermetal piece 51 is disposed. By a combination of thebase insulator 13 and the third connecting portion 51 a, thesecond bearing portion 13 g is also formed substantially as a long hole extending long in the first and the second directions A1 and A2. The third connecting portion 51 a is a part to be contacted with thecover member 25. Themetal piece 51 further has a fourth terminal portion 51 b to be connected by soldering to the connection object 50. - The
shaft portions 25 d of thecover member 25 are formed at the second end portion and spaced from each other in the third direction A3. Theshaft portions 25 d of thecover member 25 are inserted into the bearingportions 13 g of thebase insulator 13, respectively, so that thecover member 25 is held by thebase insulator 13. - The
metal piece 41 has a generally L-shape or a generally U-shape and has at least twocontact point portions 25 p contacted with thecover member 25. When thecover member 25 is opened, thecover member 25 is moved in the second direction A2. In this state, theshaft portions 25 d of thecover member 25 are brought into contact with the second and the third connectingportions 41 a and 51 a of themetal pieces cover member 25 is electrically connected to the connection object 50 through the third and thefourth terminals 41 b and 51 b. - When the
cover member 25 is locked in the closed state, thecover member 25 is moved in the first direction A1. In this state, theshaft portions 25 d of thecover member 25 are contacted with the first connectingportion 37 c of theelastic member 37 and the third connecting portion 51 a of themetal piece 51. Therefore, thecover member 25 is electrically connected to the connection object 50 through the second and the fourthterminal portions 37 b and 51 b. - As a result, the locking
portions 31 a of the lockingmembers 31, theshaft portions 25 d of thecover member 25, and the bearingportions 13 g of thebase insulator 13 cooperate with one another so that ground connection between thecover member 25 and the connection object 50 is obtained via four or more routes. Further, by the above-mentioned ground connection, EMI protection is easily provided. - The
metal piece 41 may be used as a switch for detecting a position (a locked position or an unlocked position) of thecover member 25. For example, at the locked position of thecover member 25, the thirdterminal portion 41 b is not connected to theelastic member 37 so that the switch is off. At the unlocked position of thecover member 25, the thirdterminal portion 41 b is connected to theelastic member 37 so that the switch is on. - While the present invention has thus far been described in connection with a preferred embodiment thereof, it will readily be possible for those skilled in the art to put this invention into practice in various other manners.
