EDGE GUARD Filed 001;. 30, 1954 Patented June 18, 1935 EDGE GUARD James W. Trew, Gettysburg Fa assignor to Rice,

[10 Claims. (c1. 217-3) I This invention relates to an edge guard to be disposed along the side wall of a box or kindred container such as used in the packing of citrus fruits, tomatoes and the like, and it is an object 5 of the invention to provide ajguard of thiskind with means for maintaining the same in applied position. 7
It is also an object of the'invention" to provide a band of this kindprovided with means for holding the same in applied position along the upper edge of a wall of a containerfsaid means presenting a wedge surface for contact with'the upper edge of the side wall to assure the band as applied having close contact with the side wall.
Another object of the invention is to provide a band of this kind wherein the band is provided withinthe field defined by its margins with meansto engage overthe upper edge of a side wall of a container to hold the band inposition.
The invention consists in the details of cons'truction andfin the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved edge guard whereby certain" important advantages are attained and the article rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use; as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of myin'vention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. I Y In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference tothe accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating an edge guard constructed in accordance, with an embodiment of my invention in applied posi- Figure Zis a View in elevation of the hand as illustrated in Figure l unapplied; I Y
I Figure 3 is a view similar. to Figure 2 illustrating another embodiment of my invention; I
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 111115? trating a still further embodiment of the inven tion;
Figure 5 is a detailed fragmentary sectional view of the band as illustrated in Figure 4 in applied position.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, B denotes a box or kindred container of a conventional type used in the packing of citrus fruits, tomatoes and the like, and G denotes a guard constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention adapted to be arranged along the upper inner portion of each side wall I of the box or container B in a manner to extend above said sidewall to bridge the space between the upper edge of said side wall and an applied lid. v
This guard G serves as an effective medium to substantially eliminate liability of injury'to the fruitor other content of the box' or container upon the application of the lid and also to avoid the liability of some of the content falling out between the applied lid andth'e-upper edge of the side wall I. 1 In the presentjembodiment of my invention the guard G comprises'a band of relatively heavy stock, suchas cardboard or other material capable of being used for the purpose desired and is of a length substantially equal to the distance between the end walls 2 1 of the box or container B.
The band G is also preferably disposed lengthwiththe upper edge on an outbow, said outbow being such as toapproXimately conform to the maximum bulge of thetopof thebasket content. The guard o r'band G-is also-quite broad 'sothat when it is in applied position it' will extend a considerable distance down within the upper portion of the'box'or container B so that The guard'G, or band asit may also be called,
is initially :flat and is providedv centrally in its lower marginal portion with. the spaceditransversely disposed slits 3 extending'a material distance inwardly of the band or guardi-fromthe lower edge. -Asis particularly illustratedin Figure 2, the slits 3. are in parallelism although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself in this respect.
Beforethe band G is applied to a side wall" I of the box or container :3, the. portion of the stock of the band or guard between the slits 3 is forced outwardly whereby is provided a later-' allyv and downwardly inclined tab 4 which pro vides a wedge surface which as it contacts with the upper edge of the sidewall I; serves toassure the guard or bandG being brought into close' contact with theinner face of the side wall I and at the same time this tab 4 provides means to effectively hold the guard or band Gin applied position.
The tab 4 is integrally formed with the guard or band G proper and possesses a certain degree -wise on a curvature from one end to the other of inherent yieldability so that as the pressure from above is imposed upon the applied guard or band G, as by the lid when being put in place, no hindrance or obstruction will be offered by the tab 4 to any required downward movement of the band or guard G into the box or container B. It is also possible that upon unusual downward movement of the guard or band G within the box or container B the tab 4 will tear off. This, however, is not a disadvantage because at that time there will be sufiicient pressure of the basket contentoutwardly upon the portion of the applied guard or band G overlying the wall I to assure the desired maintenance of the band or guard G in place. a
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in Figure 3 the purposes and general construction is the same except that the band or guard G is provided at points spaced lengthwise thereof and preferably in the end portionsof the guard or band G with the parallel slits 3' whereby is provided a pluralityof tabs 4. In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the tabs l are afforded by the parallel slits 3 and'the transverse slit 5 connecting the lower extremities of the slits 3 provided at the opposite end portions of the guard or band G". These tabs l coact with the box or container B as illustrated in Figure 5 in the-same manner as'the guards or bands G and G hereinbefore referred to.
In. the embodiments of the invention ashereinbefore set forth it is to be noted that in each instance the tab or tabs are arranged within the field defined by the margins of the band or guard G and that initially said tab or tabs are coplanar with the guard or band.
From the, foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an edge guard constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use" by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and used, and it will also be obvious that my invention issusceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this'reason I do not wish to be understood aslimiting self to the precise arrangementand formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:-'-

An' edge guard for a container comprising a band to be positioned along an upper edge of the container. and: extending above such edge, and means within the field defined by the margins of the band and extending laterally therefrom and in a direction towardthe lower margin of .the band to engage the upper edge of the container to hold the band in applied position.
2.iAn edge guard for a container comprising a band to be positioned along an upper edge of the container and extending above such edge having means within the field defined by the'margins of the band and" extending laterally therefrom and in a direction toward the lower margin of the band to engage the upper edge of the container to hold the band in'applied position.

7. An edge guard for a container comprising a band to be positioned along an upper edge of the container and extending above such edge, and a tab carried by the band at a point within the field defined by the margins of the band, said tab being disposed in a direction toward the lower margin of the band to engage over the upper edge of the side wall of the container to hold the band in applied position.
8. An edge guard for a container comprising a band to be positioned along an upper edge of the container and extending above such edge, and a tab carried by the band at a point within the field defined by the margins of the band, said tab being disposed in a direction toward the lower margin of the band to engage over the upper edge of the side wall of the container to hold the band in applied position, said tab being initially coplanar with the band.
9. An edge guard for a container comprising a band to be positioned along an upper edge of the container and extending above such edge, and tabs carried by the band at points Within the field defined by the margins of the band and spaced apart lengthwise of the band, said tabs being disposed toward the lower margin of the band to engage over the upper edge of the side wall of the container to hold the band in applied position.
10. An edge guard for a container comprising a band to be positioned along an upper edge of the container and extending above such edge, and means carried by the band inwardly of its ends and between the upper and lower margins of the band presenting a surface to engage over the upper edge of the side wall to draw the band against said side wall and to hold the band in applied position.
