Abstract

Although several knot tying devices have been conceived to aid in the tying of fish hooks, all are generally complex, cumbersome, difficult to use, or ineffective. By utilizing a pistol grip device with front and rear stanchions and a hook mounting pad, one can easily and quickly tie a perfect fishing knot every time. The fishing line is inserted through the eye of the hook, around the stanchions, is looped twice around itself at the intersection between the stanchions and is simply pulled to set the hook while keeping the hook safely in the hook mounting pad to prevent accidental hooking of the person tying the knot.

  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention relates to a simple, inexpensive and easy to fabricate device for tying a knot. One embodiment of the device relates to tying the knot which secures a fishing hook to fishing line. As any fisherman can attest, tying a sound knot is essential to ensuring that a fish that is hooked is ultimately netted. The process of tying a knot in fishing line is particularly difficult for children who may lack the dexterity and coordination required to tie a good knot.
  • Past attempts to create a device to aid in the tying of knots, including fishing knots, have involved complex and cumbersome devices generally as hard to manipulate as the unaided knot tying itself. The present invention meets the challenge by providing a small device, inexpensive to manufacture and simple to use.
  • The present invention allows anyone, including a small child, to avoid the potential of being pricked by a fish hook and allowing the user to quickly tie a perfect knot every time.
  • BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention satisfies the needs discussed above. The present invention is generally directed towards a knot tying device which is simple, light weight and easy to operate.
  • The present invention provides a device with no moving parts which includes a body with a pistol type grip, a hook mounting tab at the end of the body and string stanchions attached to the top of the body. The subject device is held in one hand by the pistol grip, a hook is inserted into the hook mounting tab, and a fishing line is inserted though the hook, wrapped around the stanchions, wrapped twice around the line, and then pulled to set the hook.

  • FIG. 3 is a top view of a preferred embodiment of the knot tying device which illustrates the preferred ways in which a knot may be tied.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • The knot tying device is illustrated in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 and is designated generally by the number 1. The knot tying device 1 includes a body 2 that has an elongated portion 3, a grip 4, a hook mounting pad 5 at the end of the body 2 closest to the grip 4, with a slit 6 to accommodate any common size fish hook 11, a front string stanchion 7 on the top of the body 2 opposite the hook mounting pad 5, a rear string stanchion 8 on top of the body 2 between the hook mounting pad 5 and the front string stanchion 7, and a depression 9 in the body 2 between the two string stanchions 7 and 8. In the preferred embodiment, the angle between the body 2 and the grip 3 is approximately 80 degrees; however additional embodiments could provide for an angle between 70 and 120 degrees.
  • The knot tying device 1 is made and used in the following manner. In the preferred embodiment, the body 2, the grip 3 and the string stanchions 7 and 8 are made from plastic. In the preferred embodiment, the hook mounting pad 5 is made from neoprene or a similar flexible material which will easily allow the insertion of any common size fish hook and hold it in place during the knot tying process. Additionally, the plastic used in the preferred embodiment would be of such buoyancy as to allow the knot tying device 1 to float in fresh water. This embodiment has the advantage of buoyancy and corrosion resistance.
  • Although it is desirable that the knot tying device 1 be constructed of light weight, corrosion resistant materials which, together, will float, it should be understood that the knot tying device 1 can be manufactured from any number of materials that are known in the art. Additionally, although the preferred embodiment is directed towards the tying of fish hooks, it should be understood that the knot tying device 1 can be manufactured with or without the hook mounting pad 5 and can be used to tie knots around any number of objects so long as the object is stationary or can be made to be stationary.
  • The use of the knot tying device, in the preferred embodiment, is illustrated in FIG. 3. In one of the preferred embodiments, the knot tying device 1 is used by wrapping the end of a fishing line 10 around the right side of the front stanchion 7, then over the depression 9, then around the left side of the rear stanchion 8, though the eye of a hook 11, around the right side of the rear stanchion 8, over the depression 9, around the left side of the front stanchion 7, around the right side of the front stanchion 7, over the depression 9 and the intersection 12 of the line 10 which is formed over the depression 9, then twice around the portions of line 10 located at the intersection 12, then through the loop 13 created by wrapping the line 10 twice around the portions of line 10 located at the intersection 12, then the end of the line 10 is used to pull the remainder of the line 10 off of the stanchions 7 and 8 and is pulled tight to set the knot.
  • In another of the preferred embodiments, the knot tying device 1 is used by wrapping the end of a fishing line 10 around the right side of the front stanchion 7, then over the depression 9, then around the left side of the rear stanchion 8, though the eye of a hook 11, around the right side of the rear stanchion 8, over the depression 9, around the left side of the front stanchion 7, around the right side of the front stanchion 7, over the depression 9 and the intersection 12 of the line 10 which is formed over the depression 9, then twice around the portions of line 10 located at the intersection 12, then through the triangular hole 14 situated between the intersection 12 and either of rear stanchion 8 or the front stanchion 7, then the end of the line 10 is used to pull the remainder of the line 10 off of the stanchions 7 and 8 and is pulled tight to set the knot.
  • Although the invention has been described in detail with reference to a particular embodiment, it is to be understood that variations or modifications may be made within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Claims (10)

1. A knot tying device comprising:
a body having an elongated portion and a grip, the elongated portion having a top;
a rear stanchion connected to the top of the elongated portion of the body; and
a front stanchion connected to the top of the elongated portion of the body and disposed with respect to the rear stanchion such that a depression is formed between the front stanchion and the rear stanchion, said depression being capable of receiving a fishing line; and
a means for securing a fishing hook.
2. The knot tying device of claim 1, wherein said body is constructed of plastic.
3. The knot tying device of claim 1, wherein said grip is constructed of plastic.
4. The knot tying device of claim 1, wherein said front and rear stanchions are constructed of plastic.
5. The knot tying device of claim 1, wherein said knot tying device is made of materials which allow it to float in fresh water.

7. The knot tying device of claim 1, wherein the means for securing a fishing hook further comprises a hook mounting pad.

9. The knot tying device of claim 7, the hook mounting pad further comprising a slit configured to receive an apparatus onto which a line is attached with a knot.
10. The knot tying device of claim 9, wherein the apparatus further comprises a hook.
