In the embodiment shown in, for example,FIGS. 2 , 7 and 8, athird wheel 14 is provided in the transport means 13, upstream from, and in front of, thesecond wheel 10. A snare orband 15 is guided over thesecond wheel 10 and thethird wheel 14. Thethird wheel 14 is mounted on anaxis 16 between afirst bracket 17 and asecond bracket 18. Thesecond bracket 18 can extend along theband 15 and be connected to or carry theaxis 20 of thesecond wheel 10. Thefirst bracket 17 can extend on the opposite side of thestar wheel 8 and be connected to anaxis 19 of thefirst wheel 9. Thebrackets arm 21 connected to the housing by a spring loadedmount 22, such that thewheels band 15 are pushed in the direction of theguide surface 11. Theband 15 andthird wheel 14 can extend above the feeding means 2, such that at least theband 15 can grab thenecks 5 of thebags 4 first, especially when thebags 4 are slightly open or upstanding. -
FIG. 2 shows in perspective view theapparatus 1. Theapparatus 1 comprises ahousing 23 with a widerlower part 24 and a narrowerupper part 25, such that aplatform 26 is formed at the top of thelower part 24, next to theupper part 25. Theguide surface 11 has been partly removed, as well as some protective plating. Theplatform 26 can be used as, or support, aguide surface 11. As can be seen inFIG. 1 , thewheels platform 26, here above theplatform 26, whereas at levels to the opposite side of theplatform 26, here below, there are twodrive wheels FIG. 4 ). Afirst drive wheel 27 can be, when nobag 4 is provided, close to or in engagement with thefirst wheel 9, whereas asecond wheel 28 of the drive wheels can be, when nobag 4 is provided, close to or in engagement with thesecond wheel 10. Thedrive wheels common axis 30 and driven at a constant speed for periods of time defined by acontrol 31. The control is connected to, for example, asensor 32 sensing presence of abag 4 and activates themotor 29 for a period of time necessary for feeding thebag 4 past the star wheel, as will be discussed hereafter. Thedrive wheels axis 30, such that space is created between the drive wheels for thestar wheel 8 and aknife construction 33 to be discussed. Thedrive wheels band 15, the first and/or thesecond wheel bags 4. - In
FIG. 3 an apparatus according toFIG. 2 is shown in which thedrive wheels FIG. 3 shows part of thestar wheel 8, part of theknife construction 33, and aguide block 36 for afoil strip 34 to be dispensed during use from a foil dispenseroll 35. Also visible inFIG. 3 is arotating element 37 that is normally connected to thesecond drive wheel 28 such that therotating element 37 rotates with thesecond drive wheel 28 around thesame axis 30. Therotating element 37 is, in the illustrative embodiment, a ring comprising aprofile 38, such as a circularouter surface 39 with alip 40 extending radially outward between twonotches 41 extending radially inward. - As shown in more detail in
FIGS. 11A and B, thestar wheel 8 includes a number ofelements 42 extending from aside surface 43 of thestar wheel 8, eachelement 42 being positioned between twoadjacent cells 12. Thelip 40 of the rotating element extends, during rotation of thering 37 around theaxis 30, in a path extending along thestar wheel 8 such that, when thering 37 is rotated, at least one of theelements 42 of thestar wheel 8 is, as a coupling element, engaged by the extendinglip 40 for rotating thestar wheel 8 around anaxis 44. Assuming a rotation direction Rr of thering 37 in a clockwise direction, inFIG. 11A a position is shown in which thelip 40 has engaged theelement 42A in front of afirst cell 12A and is halfway a rotation angle α imposed by thering 37 on thestar wheel 8. Other numbers of cells can be provided, as well as other numbers ofcoupling elements 42 and/or other numbers oflips 40. In each of these variations the construction can be designed such that upon rotation of therotating element 37 over a first angle β, the star wheel can be rotated over a second angle α, in an opposite direction, to be chosen as desired. Thering 37 is part of the transport means or can at least be coupled to the transport means discussed herein above. - In the exemplary embodiment shown in
FIG. 11 thestar wheel 8 has sixcells 12 and sixcoupling elements 42, which can for example be pins, bolts, integrally formed protrusions or other means for engagement. The diameters D1 and D2 of thering 37 and thestar wheel 8 and the position of theelements 42 and the length of thelip 40 extending from thering 37 are designed such that upon rotation of therotating element 37 such that the lip is brought from one side of the star wheel to the opposite side, the star wheel is rotated over an angle α of 120 degrees. During use this will mean that, upon one full rotation of the ring over 360 degrees, thestar wheel 8 will be rotated over 120 degrees, meaning two cells (in the case of a six cell wheel). Thecoupling element 42 engaged by thelip 40 will, during rotation, enter into and subsequently move out of thenotch 41 in front of thelip 40, seen in the direction of movement, whereas the trailingcoupling element 42 will move into and out of the trailingnotch 41, thus allowing the rotation over the angle α. - As can be seen in
FIG. 11B , when thelip 40 is not engaging anycoupling element 42, two of thesecoupling elements 42 lays against theouter profile 39 of thering 37, thus preventing rotation of thestar wheel 8. This effect is used during gathering of theneck 5 of one of thebags 4 and feeding theneck 5, during gathering, into thecell 12A in the direction Fin and/or during moving theneck 5 of another one of thebags 4 out of acell 12C in the discharging direction Fout. Due to the configuration, in the embodiment ofFIGS. 11A-C onlycells neck 5 of ones of thebags 5. - Referring primarily to
FIGS. 3 , 4 and 9, theknife construction 33 comprises ahammer block 45 mounted on anaxis 46. Theblock 45 comprises afirst arm 47 extending above acylindrical wall 51 around theaxis 30, carrying aknife 48 that extends from the free end of thefirst arm 47 upward. Asecond arm 49 is provided extending downward from theaxis 46 and carrying afollower 50 extending substantially parallel to thefirst arm 47. In thecylindrical wall 51 anopening 52 is provided, positioned at an angle γ relative to thelip 40. When thecylindrical wall 51 is rotated together with thering 37 thefollower 50 will move over the outer surface of thewall 51 until thefollower 50 can enter into theopening 52 and rotating theblock 45 around theaxis 46. The rotation of theblock 45 moves theknife 48 upward into acell 12 facing downward at that time. This can in an embodiment as shown inFIG. 11 be acell 12B following acell 12C in which aneck 5 of a one of thebags 4 has been gathered and sealed by aseal 53 formed by tape or tape and foil, as will be discussed hereafter. Tape and/or foil, extending as a trailing part over said followingcell 12B will then be cut by theknife 48, releasing the sealed one of thebags 5, inFIG. 1 shown at the right hand side. The angle γ shall, in this embodiment, be chosen such that thestar wheel 8 is driven over half the angle α before theknife 48 is forced into the empty followingcell 12B. In that position thecell 12A inFIG. 11B is ready to receive anext neck 5 of abag 4 to be gathered. Theknife block 45 can be rotated by gravity and engagement of thefollower 50 with thecylindrical wall 51. In another embodiment theknife 48 can be moved up by a profile on thecylindrical wall 51, instead of theopening 50, in which case the follower could be removed. In still another embodiment theknife 48 is moved by a separate drive mechanism such as an individual motor, rod mechanisms, drive belt or any other solution readily available to the person skilled in the art. - In an embodiment depicted in
FIG. 4 , apin 54 is mounted on an end of theaxis 46 and engages atoothed wheel 55. Thewheel 55 is designed such that each time theknife 48 has to be moved up, thepin 54 is moved over a tooth of thewheel 55, thus forcing theaxis 46 to rotate back and forth, forcing theknife 48 into and out off therelevant cell 12 for cutting the tape and/or foil. Thewheel 55 will rotate at a slower speed than thedrive wheels same motor 31, for example, by a gear mechanism (not shown). - As can be seen in
FIG. 2 aroll 56 oftape 57 can be mounted on anarm 58 extending from thehousing 13. This is preferablyadhesive tape 57 with anadhesive layer 61 facing inward to acore 59 of theroll 56. During use thetape 57 is fed from theroll 56 over aguide mechanism 70 towards thestar wheel 8. In the embodiment ofFIG. 2 , of which part is shown inFIGS. 7 and 8 in more detail, aguide roller 60 is shown over which thetape 57 is guided.FIG. 7 shows the relevant part from a first side, substantially corresponding with the view ofFIGS. 2 and 3 , whereas,FIG. 8 shows the opposite side. InFIG. 8 thetape 57 and thefoil strip 34 are schematically shown, feeding towards thestar wheel 8. As can be seen in, for example,FIGS. 5 and 6 , the foil dispenseroll 35 is positioned such that thefoil strip 34 is led in between the first andsecond drive wheels guide surface 11 under the star wheel inFIG. 1 . Thetape 57 is fed over theguide roller 60 and thestar wheel 8. -
FIGS. 10A-D schematically show, in four steps, applying aseal 53 around theneck 5 of abag 4 or other such flexible container. The container has to be flexible enough for part thereof, such as a neck, to be gathered in acell 12 of thestar wheel 8. InFIG. 10A thestar wheel 8 is shown in a first position, stationary with acell 12 open to the feeding means 2, for feeding aneck 5 into the cell. As can be seen inFIG. 10A , theneck 5 is gathered into a substantially closed bundled up position by the gathering means as discussed before. Theneck 5 is grabbed between thefirst wheel 9 and thefirst drive wheel 27 and between thesecond wheel 10 orband 15 and thesecond drive wheel 28 and pushed towards thecell 12C.Adhesive tape 57 is led over the outer circumference of part of thestar wheel 8, with theadhesive layer 61 facing outward, such that it extends at least over the opening 61 of thecell 12C. Afoil strip 34, for example a paper strip, is led from a lower side to thestar wheel 8 and is attached to aforward end 62 of theadhesive tape 57. InFIG. 10B the gatheredneck 5 has been fed into thecell 12C, forcing thetape 57 into the cell, substantially against theinner wall 63 thereof, the star wheel still being in the same position. The gatheredneck 5 can be held in this position by the rotating element, as discussed before. Theneck 5 is thus almost entirely surrounded by theadhesive tape 57. InFIG. 10C the star wheel is shown in a position in which it has been rotated counter clockwise over about 60 degrees, for example, by engagement of thestar wheel 8 by the rotating element orring 37. Thetape 57 can have been pulled further around theneck 5, for example, but not necessarily to such extent that it is attached to itself, forming a joint 65, fully circumventing theneck 5. As can be seen thefoil strip 34 has been drawn off theroll 35 further and has been attached to thetape 57 over such length that it traverses the joint 65. InFIG. 10D a position is shown in which thestar wheel 8 has been rotated further, counter clockwise over, for example, substantially another 60 degrees such that theopening 61 of thecell 12C extends above theguide surface 11, or at least to such extend that thebag 4 can be discharged from thecell 12A. Theknife 48 can, for example as discussed before, be driven upward into thecell 12B, cutting through the combinedtape 57 andfoil strip 34, cutting theseal 53 off from thetape 57 andfoil strip 34. At the same time theadjacent cell 12A has become available for feeding afurther neck 5 into it. - The
foil strip 34 can be made of paper or plastic or another material. Preferably it can easily be torn by a user, preferably easier than thetape 57, such that theseal 53 can be broken easily. In an alternative embodiment the foil strip is left out, the seal formed by tape only. In still another embodiment the foil strip is replaced by a strip of individual elements to be adhered to thetape 57 at one or opposite sides of the joint 65, such that the ends of the tape on opposite sides of said joint will not adhere to each other. These individual elements can, for example, be carried on a strip like backing. In another embodiment a substantially non adhesive tape can be used, which is provided with adhesive only in the parts that have to enclose theneck 5 of abag 4, but not the parts that form the free ends of the seal, distanced over a certain distance from the joint. The adhesive can, for example, be applied to the non-adhesive tape in blocks prior to delivery or near or at the star wheel, before feeding the neck into thecell 12. - In
FIG. 1 acontrol 31 is shown, for example, connected to asensor 32 for sensing a bag in a desired proximity of thestar wheel 8 such that the gathering can be advanced and the rotating element should be rotated. The control can also be provided with a communication means 67 and/or positioning means 68 such as, but not limited to, wireless communication means and/or wired communication means, such as a telephone, GPS or GPRS. The communication means 67 can be designed to communicate with, for example, a computer of telephone network, with a supplier of tape and/or foil, with a maintenance firm or the like. Further sensors can be connected to the control, such as one or more sensors for sensing the amount oftape 57 and/or foil 34 strip dispensed and/or used and/or sensing a remaining amount oftape 57 and/orstrip 34 remaining on the respective rolls 35, 56. Therolls 35 and/or 56 can be provided with indicators, such as but not limited to RFID chips, bar codes or other means that can be physically or electronically read by sensors in the apparatus, for identification of the rolls and setting a mode of the apparatus through thecontrol 31, for example the length of tape to be dispensed, tension of thestrip 34 and/ortape 57 to be applied, or even bringing the apparatus in a working or non working mode. The positioning means 68 can be provided for sensing and communicating location and/or location changes of theapparatus 1, such that it is easy to keep track of the apparatus. Counting means can be provided for counting the number of seals manufactured with the apparatus, for example by counting the number of revolutions of thestar wheel 8 and/or of one of the drive wheels and/or of therotating element 37. - The invention is by no means limited to the embodiments shown and discussed here above. Many amendments and variations are possible within the scope of the invention. For example the orientation of the apparatus can be different, such that for example the bags are fed through the apparatus vertically, for example hanging from transport means or carried on transport means with the necks upward, wherein the
axis 44 of the star wheel can include an angle with a horizontal directed, can be inclined or disposed vertically. Therotating element 37 and especially thelip 40 can be positioned such that it engages thestar wheel 8 at a side spaced apart from the area where the neck is gathered an fed into a cell, for example inFIG. 10 on the upper side of thestar wheel 8 or at least at a side of the star wheel opposite theguide surface 11. The star wheel can also be driven differently, for example, through a step motor engaging theaxis 44 or by the feeding and/or discharging means, thering 37 only being used for blocking and allowing rotation of thestar wheel 8 over a specific angle. Instead of thestar wheel 8 in the present form, rotatable around anaxis 44, astar wheel 8 can be in the form of an endless star belt, formed as a belt having a series of cells in an outwardly facing surface, guided over at least two end wheels, such that a series ofcells 12 is fed along the guide surface, allowing a series of bags to be handled at the same time. The position of thetape roll 56 and thefoil strip roll 35 can be changed such as, for example, changed over. Means can be provided to print information on and/or in the tape and/or the foil strip, such as sealing date, expiration date of the product P, packing apparatus identification, advertisements or other information. In the embodiments shown, the width of the strip offoil 34 is about the same as the width of thetape 57. These widths can be different, for example, when thefoil strip 34 should have a greater width in order to provide further information, such as user information, warranties and other communications. These and other modifications, including all combinations and permutations of aspects and parts of the embodiments shown are supposed to have been disclosed here, both in isolation and in combination.
