BRASSIERE OR BUST HOLDER Filed June 21, 1934 Patented Aug. 6, 1935 UNITED STATES BRASSIERE OR BUST HOLDER Bertram Harold Norman,
Brookside, Market Harborough, England, assignor to R. & W. H. Symington & Company Limited, Market Harborough, England, a company of England Application June 21, 1934, Serial No. 731,610 In Great Britain May 2, 1934 1 Claim.
This invention has reference to garments for ladies wear of the kind generally known or des ignated brassieres or bust holders and relates to an improved construction or arrangement thereof, some of the objects of the invention being to render the garment more easily adjustable, to enable the same to preserve its shape more perfectly and its position on the figure in a more reliable manner.
According to this invention, the breast parts of the brassiere or bust holder are connected along a portion of their lower edges by a centrally disposed insertion of elastic material or webbing which, upon the garment being donned, assumes a position approximately at the waist line. Above the insert the breast parts are disconnected for a certain distance and provided at their upper and coincident ends with a ribbon or the like, the tying of which is adapted to hold the breast parts together and afford a means of adjusting the garment by tightening or loosening the same upon or about the figure. The breast parts are formed or provided with band-like extensions which are adapted to pass laterally therefrom around the figure to the back thereof where they are connected by a centrally disposed insertion of elastic material or webbing. Shoulder straps or bands, adjustable by means of slides or the like, extend from the apices of the breast parts to the back where they are connected to the band-like extensions at or about the junction thereof with the elastic insertion. Preferably, the garment is arranged for side fastening by means of hooks and eyes but other suitable or desired fastening devices may be employed.
In order that the invention may be readily understood and carried into effect same will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a front view of the improved brassiere or bust holder.
Figure 2 is a back view thereof.
The garment comprises the breast parts a a and the band-like parts b b, the latter extending sidewise or laterally from the parts a a to the back. The breast parts are connected in or about the region of the waist line by a suitable length-dependent on the size of the garment-of elastic material or webbing 0 applied, in the embodiment of the invention shown, in the form which has been found most convenient and satisfactory in experimental trials, and which consists of an inverted and laterally splayed V, the diagonal cut edges of the elastic being secured by stitching to corresponding diagonally cut edges a a of the breast parts a a. Somewhat similarly, the bandlike-back parts b b are connected, also in or about the region of the waistline, by an elastic insertion d, the latter having diagonally cut edges for attachment to diagonally arranged edges b b of the band-like parts b b. The breast parts are continued above the insert 0 with parallel edges and provided with button-hole stitched apertures or eyelets e e for receiving a ribbon f whereby the upper portion of the said parts are held together in position and a certain degree of adjustment afforded the breast parts by tightening or loosening the connection. The garment is secured on the figure by means of hook-and-eye or other suitable fastenings (not shown) situated at the side indicated at g and is supported by the shoulder straps h h which extend from the apices a a" of the breast parts a a rearwardly to the bandlike parts b b to which they are secured, as indicated, by stitching, there being slides h h on the said straps whereby they may be adjusted for length by drawing them through the holes or eyelets h" h" as will be readily understood. 1 1 each indicate a dart seam formed across the breast parts with the object of affording fullness to or fashioning of the said parts. The disposition and number of said seams may be varied to suit requirements of different figures.
By means of a co-operative action between the elastic insertions c and d and the ribbon f when the latter is manipulated for the purpose of adjusting and securing the garment on the figure, a stretching of the front elastic 0 results with the effect that the brassiere or bust holder is enabled to effectually support and hold the figure and to retain its shape. The improved construction or arrangement moreover enables the garment to preserve its position on the figure by counteracting any tendency for the same to rise up thereon. Again, if or when constructed of suitable material the garment is eminently adapted for wear during the period of nursing.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is:-
A brassiere or bust support which comprises a front and a back section, fashioned breast supporting parts in the front section, a triangular shaped elastic insertion to connect the said parts in and about the waist, a portion of each breast supporting part from and above the elastic insertion disconnectedly related to the other, an eyelet located at the upper end of each said disconnectedly related portion, a ribbon passed through the eyelets to adjust and hold the garment in position on the figure, band-like parts in the back section having lateral-front mergent connection with the breast parts, a centrally located insertion of elastic material to yieldingly connect the said band-like parts in and about the waist and shoulder straps respectively connected by their ends to the apices of the breast parts and to the centrally located ends of the said band-like parts of the back section.
BERTRAM HAROLD NORMAN.
