SURGICAL DRESSING Filed July 12, 1934 INVENTOR OTTODE Mum I Patented Aug. 27, 1935 PATENT OFFICE SURGICAL DRESSING Otto De Muth, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Application July 12, 1934, Serial No. 734,825
2 Claims. (01. 128-335) My invention relates to improvements in surgical dressings which are particularly adapted for use on abdominal and other wounds where a plurality of layers have to be closed. The objects of the invention are to provide means whereby the skin and as many layers of tissue as have been severed may be held in perfect and constant abutment throughout the length of the wound; to substantially take the strain off the sutures immediately following the operation, and to give such tensional support to the tissues that coughing and other internal strains will not result in rupture of the wound, distention or other damage. Further objects are to keep the edges of the wound in constant apposition whereby circulation may be maintained, thus producing a more rapid healing of the wound than that which normally obtains.
The invention consists essentially of a pair of adhesive plasters tensionally held together, as will be more fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which 2-- Fig. 1 is a general view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view.
In the drawing, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
The numeral l indicates a pair of adhesive plasters of any suitable type which are preferably apertured as at 2 for the purpose of affording ventilation to the skin. Attached to the adjacent edges of each plaster is a strip 3 of elastic material of suitable strength to provide the necessary tension.
To the inner edge of one of the elastic strips 3 is sewn or otherwise secured a strip of celluloid 4 having a plurality of aligned apertures 5, and to the inner edge of the other elastic strip 3 and the inner edge of the celluloid strip 4 are the complementary parts of a strip fastener 5 of any suitable type preferably of the slide fastener or Zipper" type. A further strip of celluloid 'l is secured to one of the complementary parts of the fastener 6 to underlie the metallic members and to prevent possible pinching or harm to the skin when closing or opening the fastener.
In applying the bandage it is laid onto the skin and one of the adhesive plasters l is secured thereto, the bandage is then suitably stretched 5 across the wound and the other adhesive is secured in position, the disposition is such that the strip of celluloid 4 overlies the incision so that it may be kept in view during the healing period.
If slight drainage is desired, this may be attended 10 to through one or more of the apertures 5 in said strip.
When the wound is to be dressed, the fastener may be opened and the dressing attended to and the same tension again be applied to the wound as before.
By virtue of the fact that the joint of the bandage lies in the same plane as the adhesive plasters l the layers of tissue at the incision retain precisely the same form and position as before the operation, hence healing may result at the same rate at any degree of depth below the skin surface.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A surgical'dressing comprising a pair of adhesive plasters spaced apart and having a strip of elastic connected to the inner end of each plaster, a strip of celluloid connected to the inner edge of one strip of elastic, said celluloid strip and the other strip of elastic being adapted for connection to each other by a slide fastener.
2. A surgical dressing comprising a pair of adhesive plasters spaced apart and having a strip of elastic connected to the inner end of each plaster, a strip of celluloid connected to the inner 5 edge of one strip of elastic, said celluloid strip and the other strip of elastic being adapted for connection to each other by a slide fastener, and a. further strip of celluloid secured to one component part of the slide fastener and adapted, when l the slide fastener isclosed, to project under the first mentioned celluloid strip.
O'I'IO DE MUTH.
