For example, folding chair 20 illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 includes buckle systems 50. Each of buckle systems 50 includes buckle plug 52 and buckle socket 54. Buckle plugs 52 are strapped to back frame member 36. Each of buckle sockets 54 are strapped to one of seat frame members 32. Some or all of the straps for buckle plug 52 and buckle socket 54 may be adjustable in length (for example, by sliding a buckle on the strap).
  • When chair back 24 and chair seat 22 are folded with respect to one another, buckle plugs 52 may be coupled to buckle sockets 54 to inhibit chair back 24 and chair seat 22 from unfolding. In some embodiments, buckle systems 50 are used to maintain folding chair 20 in a folded condition while folding chair 20 is carried on the back of a user using straps 44.
  • Folding chair 20 includes side bags 58. Side bags 58 may be saddlebags on chair seat 22. In some embodiments, side bags 58 are flexible and/or collapsible. One of side bags 58 is coupled to each of seat frame members 32. Side bags 58 include compartments 60. • Folding chair 20 includes shade system 64. Shade system 64 includes rear shade frame member 65, front shade frame member 66, shade panel 67, hinges 68, and shade mount clip 69. Shade system 64 may be coupled to back frame member 36 by way of shade mount clip 69. Shade panel 67 may be made of a flexible material, such as a nylon sheet, cloth, or fabric. Shade panel 67 includes mesh vent 71.
  • Shade system 64 may be adjustable (for example, to control how far shade panel 67 extends over a user's head). Shade system 64 may serve as an awning for a user a chair. Shade system 64 may be collapsible. For example, front shade frame member 66 may be moved on hinges 68 to collapse shade system 64 and/or retract shade system 64 against the back of chair 20.
  • In some embodiments, a shade system includes containers, such as pouches, for carrying items. FIG. 3 illustrates one embodiment of a shade system including zippered pouches for carrying items. Shade system 74 is may be clipped onto a chair by way of clips 69. Shade system 74 includes zippered containers 76. Zippered containers 76 are located on the bottom of shade panel 67 of shade system 74. Shade system 74 includes carrying strap 77. Carrying strap 77 may be a shoulder strap. Carrying strap 77 may be connected and disconnected from another portion of the shade system, such as frame members 65 or 66, for purposes of carrying shade system 74. When not in use, carrying strap 77 may be stowed in one of zippered containers 76.
  • In one example of a use of a shade system, a user uses carrying strap 77 to carry shade system 74 to a location that already has chairs, such as a swimming pool at a resort. The user may attach shade system 74 to one of the chairs that is already at the location.
  • Although in the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2, and 3, the shade system includes a clip that allows a user to snap the shade system onto a chair, a shade system for a chair may, in various embodiments, be detachably connected to a chair in other manners, such as by screws, clamps, magnets or a cam lock mechanism.
  • In some embodiments, a side compartment includes multiple containers for holding items. FIG. 4 is a top view illustrating one embodiment of a side bag having multiple compartments with a zippered cover protecting the contents in the compartments. Side bags 51 include compartments 60, zippered cover 57, and mounting sleeve 53. In some embodiments, mounting sleeve 53 slides onto a tubular member. Mounting sleeve 53 may be used to mount side bags 51 on chair, (for example, on seat frame members 32 of folding chair 20).
  • In some embodiments, side containers can be retracted or captured when a chair is folded. FIG. 5 illustrates an embodiment of side bags that have been folded onto a seat. In some embodiments, the side bags are folded over and onto a chair seat before the back of the seat is folded down to enable transporting the chair to or from a location. In some embodiments, the side bags flip inward onto the seat on tubular frame members of a chair, such as seat frame members 32. In some embodiments, items are transported in side bags while the side bags and chair are folded up.
