Abstract

A method of playing a card game includes the steps of providing a card deck that includes cards having song titles and clues that enable players to guess the song titles, selecting clue givers for giving clues to players to enable them to guess the songs on the cards, awarding points to players correctly guessing song titles, and completing the game when a player receives a predetermined number of points. In alternative embodiments, the card game method may include the use of a single clue giver and players may be grouped into teams rather than playing as individuals.

Description

    CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
  • This application claims priority on U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 61/963,058, entitled “Guess This Song card game” and filed on Nov. 22, 2013. The '058 application is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention relates generally to card games. More specifically, the present invention pertains to a song guessing card game.
  • Card games are known in the art. Examples of existing card games include Go Fish, Crazy Eights, Blackjack, as well as various other games such as Seven Card Stud and Five card draw. None of these existing games, however, allow players to test their knowledge of songs and the applicant has determined that there is a need for such a game in various settings, including nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and retirement homes where residents are always looking for something new and entertaining to play.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention addresses this need by providing a musical card game that can be used to test a player's knowledge of songs. In one embodiment, the method of playing the card game includes the steps of providing a card deck that includes cards having song titles and clues that enable players to guess the song titles, selecting clue givers for giving clues to players to enable them to guess the songs on the cards, awarding points to players correctly guessing song titles, and completing the game when a player receives a predetermined number of points. In alternative embodiments, the card game method may include the use of a single clue giver and players may be grouped into teams rather than playing as individuals.

  • FIG. 7 is top view showing the back side of one card and the front side of five cards included in the embodiment of the card deck shown in FIG. 1.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • Referring to FIG. 1, one embodiment of the card deck 10 of the present invention includes a container 12 for holding a plurality of cards 14 (FIG. 6). Container 12 may be manufactured out of paper or any other material typically used to make containers for cards. Container 12 may include a game label 16, which in this embodiment is “Guess This Song,” musical notes 18 included at the end of the game label 16, curved musical lines 20 (also referred to as a staff), and a description of the card game 22, which in this embodiment is “Musical Card Game.” As shown in FIGS. 2, 4-5, the game label 16, musical notes 18, and description of the card game are also repeated on the top, bottom, right, and left sides, 24, 26, 28, and 30, of container 12.
  • The back of container 12 includes instructions 32, which explain how to play one embodiment of the card game of the present invention, and an indention 34, which allows the cards to be more easily removed from container 12. The top side 24 of container 12 includes musical notes 18, which are positioned on the top side 24 so they appear in the indentation 34 when the top side 24 is inserted into the container 12.
  • The number of cards 14 included in the card deck may vary but, in one embodiment, 50 cards are used. Each card 14 may be manufactured out of paper or any other material that is typically used to manufacture cards and includes, on the back side, a song title section 36 and a clue section 38. Song title section 36 includes the title of a song 40 and clue section 38 includes one or more clues 42 that may be given to players to enable them to guess the title of the song in the song title section 36. Song title section 36 may include the titles of songs from any genre of music, including for illustrative purposes only, Big Band, contemporary jazz, Ragtime, Easy Listening, Blues, Classical, Hip Hop, New Age, or R&B/Soul.
  • Clue section 38 may include a variety of different clues, including specific words from the title of the song, an indication to point to a particular body part (or the entire body), hand signs, gestures, and humming a song. The front side of each card 14 includes the game label 16, musical notes 18, curved musical lines 20, and a description of the card game 22.
  • The card game is played by placing the card deck face down on a table, selecting a group of players (4 is preferred but more or less may be used and players may be grouped together to form groups that play together as teams), determining if the game will be played with a single clue giver or multiple clue givers, and designating the clue giver if a single clue giver will be used or the initial clue giver if multiple clue givers will be used.
  • Once a clue giver has been designed, that person draws a card from the top of the deck, and gives the clue or clues shown on the card to enable the players to guess the title of the song included on that card. Clues are given one at a time until a player correctly guesses the title of the song or all of the clues have been used and no player has been able to correctly guess the title of the song. If a player correctly guesses the title of the song on the drawn card, the player receives a point for doing so and, if a single clue giver is being used, that individual draws the next card off the top of the deck and the process is repeated. If multiple clue givers are being used, the person sitting clockwise from the initial clue giver becomes the next clue giver, draws the next card, and begins giving clues off of that card.
  • If none of the players can guess the title of the song on a drawn card, that card is returned to the bottom of the card deck and a new card is drawn by the initial clue giver (if only one is being used) or the next clue giver if multiple clue givers are being used.
  • When a player receives a predetermined number of points, say 10 for example, the game is over and that player is declared the winner. In alternative embodiments, 5 points, 15 points, or 25 points might be required before declaring a winner. Prizes such as food, toys, books, electronics, or other items, may be awarded to the player who guesses a song first or to the player that guesses the most songs correctly.
  • The above-described embodiments are merely possible examples of implementations set forth for a clear understanding of the principles of this disclosure. Many variations and modifications may be made to the above-described embodiments without departing substantially from the spirit and principles of the disclosure. All such modifications and variations are intended to be included herein within the scope of this disclosure and protected by the accompanying claims.
