4. Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in boxes.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved box of the collar and tray type and including a window, whereby the commoditycontained in the box is visible and is also covered.
A particular object of the invention is to provide an improved box including a tray having foldable sides and a cover having foldable sides for overhanging the sides of the tray and holding them in position; together with a collar for receiving the cover and tray and retaining their folded sides in position, whereby a simple, compact and attractive box is produced.
A-further object of the invention is to provide an improved box in which the sides of the collar, as well as the sides of the cover and tray, are flared upwardly, so that the collar will support the tray and cover; and also whereby the sides of the cover will swing away from the sides of the tray when the collar is removed; and further whereby the sides of the tray will tend to fall outward and away from the contents, when the cover is lifted from the tray.
A construction designed to carry out the in-- vention will be hereinafter described, together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawing in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view,
Figure 3 is a. perspective view of the cover,
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the tray above the cover, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating the method of opening the box.
In the drawing the numeral l0 designates a tray which may be square as shown, or of any other shape suitable for the purpose. This tray receives a cover II and said tray and cover are placed in a retaining collar or band l2.
The tray illustrated has a fiat square bottom l3 and upwardly flaring sides M. The sides are hinged to the bottom, by scoring the blank from which the tray is formed, or otherwise, When the sides are folded upwardly their vertical edges contact, thus limiting their swing and giving the tray its flared or inclined sides.
The cover ll includes a flat top 15 which conforms to the shape of the tray. The top has a window l6 which may vary in size. A sheet ll of suitable transparent material, such as cellophane, is secured to the under side of the top across said'window and is held in place by a frame l8 conforming to the window. The-sheet and frame may be cemented or fastened to the under side .of the top in any suitable manner.
Sides H! are hinged to the top in a manner similar to the hinging of the sides It. The edges of these sides I9 are so cut as to meet when said sides are swung inwardly under the top to overlie the sides of the tray and to flare upwardly. The area of the top is such that the sides of the tray will lie against the inner sides of the cover and. the top edges of the sides of the tray will support the top of the cover. When the cover is placed on the tray the sides of the cover will support the sides of the tray.
The collar I2 is flared upwardly at substantially the same angle of inclination as the 'sides l4 and I9 and is suitably formed from a strip of 20 card board, like the tray and cover, bent to shape. The ends of the strip may-be cemented together, or otherwise fastened in a suitable manner.
In assembling the box the commodity to be boxed, for instance a cake, is placed in the tray l0 and the sides M are folded up against the cake, their upper edges projecting above the top of the cake. The cover I I is placed over the tray so that the frame I8 rests upon the upper edges of the tray sides, as is shown in Figure 2, and the sides [9 overhang the sides of the tray.
The sides 19 of the cover are swung inward so as to be inserted in the collar 1!! and the cover and tray are lowered into said collar. The inclined sides of the collar force the sides of the tray and cover together so that the latter are snugly supported in said collar, as is shown in Figures 1 and 2. The top of the cake lies below the window I6 and is visible through the sheet 40 H, which covers and protects it. A compact, symmetrical and pleasing package is produced.
When it is desired to open the box, the method illustrated in Figure 5 is followed. The bottom of the tray I0 is engaged withone hand and while 45 I the collar I2 is held with the other hand, the tray and cover I l are pushed upward from the collar. When the collar is released, it is'permitted to fall down the arm, as is shown in Figure 5. The cover is then lifted from the tray. When the cover and 50 tray are lifted from the collar, the sides IQ of said cover tend to fall or swing away from the sides M of the tray and this permits the sides of the tray to swing away from the cake.
When the tray is placed on a table, the sides I l4 either swing down or are easily swung away from the cake. The box may be made of suitable material, such as cardboard, and of few parts. The collar conceals the sides of the cover and by ornamenting the collar, a highly attractive and serviceable box is produced.
The description which has been given recites more or less detail of a particular embodiment of the invention, which is set forth as new and useful, however, I desire it understood that the invention is not limited to such exact details of construction, because it is manifest that changes and modifications may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
1. A box comprising a tray having four upwardly foldable sides, a separate cover fltting over the tray and having four downwardly foldable sides overlying the sides of the tray, and a collar snugly embracing the folded sides of the cover, the collar and the sides of the tray and the cover being flared upwardly, whereby the tray is supported in said collar.
2. A box comprising a tray having upwardly inclined hinged sides, a separate cover having upwardly flared sides overlying the sides of the tray, and an angular collar having upwardly flared sides receiving and supporting the tray. and cover.
3. A box comprising a tray having upwardly inclined hinged sides, a separate cover having upwardly flared sides overlying the sides of the tray, and an angular collar having upwardly flared sides receiving and supporting the tray and cover, the bottom of the tray lying substantially flush with the bottom of the collar and the top of the cover lying substantially flush with the top edge of the collar.
4. A box comprising a flared tray, 2. separate flared cover havinga window and fitting over and around the tray, all sides of the cover extending to the bottom of the tray, and a separate flared collar snugly receiving the sides of the cover I and co-extensive therewith.
