RAILROAD-CAR FOR DAY AND NIGHT SERVICE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,254, dated May 18, 1858.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. B. CREIGHTON, of Tiffin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Method of Operating Car-Seats for Day and Night Traveling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the arrangement complete running by daylight. Fig. 2 is also a perspective view with the arrangement complete for night or sleeping position.

This invention relates 1st to certain improvements in car seats whereby the common seats and backs now in general use can be transformed into a sleeping car at a comparatively small expense, and 2nd by a simple method of using the spaces between the windows for the purpose of concealing such articles as may be necessary for forming suspended beds as seen in Fig. 2, thus preserving the appearance of the ordinary daylight car.

My invention consists 1st in employing on both sides of the seats, way slides or slotted supporters (A) containing three or more stops (2') into which the supporting pins of the stretchers (B) fall, said pins being retained in their places by means of eccentric drops (6), said drops moving in depressions (a) upon the upper half of the supporters (A) thus making the surfaces of both flush. hen the stretcher pins rest in the stops (2') at either end of the ways (A) the backs of the seats will be either erect or horizontal, but resting in the central onethe backs will be elevated at an angle for the purpose of a head rest. When the back is in an erect or inclined position it rests upon the reversible hooks It will thus be seen that car room will be economized by allowing a portion of each succeeding bed to be directly beneath the elevated backs or head rests at the same time forming a suitable space for passengers to put their feet.

The materials for the upper tier of beds are contained in boxes formed of the spaces between the windows. The canvas (D) and suspenders (S) being concealed behind the cushioned trap board (C). To form the beds the traps (C) are raised in perpendicular slots to resting places (0) one end of the suspender (S) being hooked to the ceiling of the car. The canvas (D) is then stretched from trap (O) to trap (C) every alternate one raised to (0) as represented in dotted lines as seen in Fig. 2.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. I claim the formation of car beds by means of the stationary seats and reversible backs as now in use, in combination with the slotted supporters A, stops i, pins 71, stretchers B, eccentrics Z2, and reversible hooks 00, arranged and operated substantially as set forth.

2. The described method of forming and concealing when not in use, in the spaces between the windows, an upper tier of beds, as set forth and for the purpose specified, and also the same in combination with the devices constituting the subject of the 1st claim.
