This invention relates to electric pocket lamps with removable battery.
According to the invention, the electric pocket lamp comprises in combination a case of insulat- 5 ing material, a resilient contact strip of metal with a screw-thread corresponding to the screwpart of a lamp in the front part or" the case, a lamp in the forward end of said case and. screwed into said contact strip, and a switch secured to- 10 the case and controlling the free end of said contact strip.
Two constructions according to the invention are illustrated by way of. example in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 shows a pocket 15 lamp in longitudinal section, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cap of the case, Fig. 3 shows one of the metal strips and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the other metal strip. Figs. 5 to '7 show another construction of the pocket lamp, Fig. 5 showing the 20 pocket lamp in longitudinal section, Fig. 6 is a plan view of the removable bottom end of the case provided with one of the metal strips and Fig. 7 is a view of the other metal strip.
In the construction of the pocket lamp shown 5 in Figs. 1 to 4, the case i, made of insulating material, forms an integral unit with its bottom 2 and is closed at the top by a lid in the form of a removable cap 3. The cap 3 is provided with a wall l, which fits into the casing in such man- 30 ner as to provide for its tight closure. A small lamp 5, a resilient strip or plate of metal 5 and a pivoted lever I acting as a switch device are arranged in the cap. The glass bulb of the lamp 5 is accommodated in a cavity in the cap 3, while 35 the screw of the lamp 5 passes through a hole 9 in the cavity and extends freely into the interior of the cap and casing. For securing the lamp 5, the strip or plate of metal 6 is provided with a circular hole It], the edge of which is provided 40 with a screw thread i l suited to the thread of the screw of the lamp. The lamp 5 is placed into the cavity 8 of the cap 3 is screwed into the screw thread H of the metal strip or plate 6, whereby the lamp as well as the metal strip or plate are 45 connected with each other and pulled tight at the base of the cavity. Further the metal strip or plate 6 is provided with two angularly bent resilient wings or lugs l2, provided at the ends, for instance, with pins it or the like. These 5 engage suitable holes in the wall l of the cap 3 and not only secure the metal strip or plate 6 when the lamp is screwed out, but also serve as spring bolts which engage recesses in the casing l and thus hold the cap 3 in position on the casing.
55 The free end of the metal strip or plate 6 is provided with a downwardly and backward bent tongue, which is disposed so as to be above one of the terminal contacts of the battery or of one of the cells and can be depressed into contact with the sameby the switch lever l, which is rotatable round the pivot It in the cap and moves in a slot in the wall of the case. The end of the lever l, which contacts with the strip or plate 5 preferably consists of insulating material and is wedge-shaped, so that it is maintained in either 10 switch-position by the resiliency of the metal strip or plate 5.
A battery l5 may be inserted in the case I when the cap 3 is removed. When the case is closed by application of the cap 3, the contact strip it of the battery contacts with the center pole contact of the lamp, while the other terminal ll of the battery becomes connected to the lamp-screw l l and thus to the second pole of the lamp when the metal strip or plate 6 is depressed into contact with the terminal I! by means of the switch lever l. The battery is held up with the contact strip it in contact with the lamp socket pole by means of a resilient spring member [8 disposed in the bottom of the casing l.
In place of the battery unit, individual insulated cells wrapped, for instance, in a strip of paper may be disposed in the case as shown in Fig.
5, if the spring member [8 is in the form of a bridgecontact member adapted to bridge across adjacent cells. As shown in Fig. 1, this bridge member It comprises two tongues, stamped and bent upwardly from a small plate shaped to conform to the bottom of the case I; in the case of a battery unit said tongues operate solely as pressure members, while in the case of individual cells as in Fig. 5, they further serve as bridge contact interconnecting adjacent cells.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 to '7, the case i of the pocket lamp and the cap ii are made 40 integral with one another and the bottom 2 is made removable. As shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing, the metal plate or strip 5 is in this case provided not with spring wings carrying pins l3 but only with short lugs I2, which are engaged in suitable holes in the case and maintain the metal strip in the correct position when the lamp is removed. In this case the switch lever l is rotatable around the pivot M in a slot of the case. The
spring member l8, serving as bridging contact, is 5 secured to the bottom 2 and is preferably provided with two lateral upwardly bent spring arms or lugs 20, each of which carries an outwardly bent tongue or a pin. When the bottom 2 is applied to the case, the said lugs slide along the 5 inner wall of the latter until their pins on the arms 20 engage openings in the Wall of the casing and thus secure the bottom in its closing position.
The rim of the cap 3 in Fig. 1 is of such dimensions that its wall 4 provides a shoulder forming a stop for the battery or the cells, or as shown in Fig. 5 one or more ribs 2| are provided in the interior of the case, to maintain the battery or individual cells with its terminal contact spaced slightly from the metal contact strip 6.
If desired, the metal strip 6 may carry a reflector for the lamp 5, which preferably then serves as the lamp holder.
I claim:-
1. Electric pocket lamp with removable battery comprising in combination a case of insulating material, openings in said case, a flexible strip of metal arranged in the back end of the case, a flexible contact strip of metal provided with lateral lugs arranged in the forward end of said case and entering said openings, a screw-thread corresponding to the screw-part of a lamp on said contact strip, a lamp passing through said case and screwed into said contact strip, and a switch secured to the case and controlling the free end of said contact strip.
2. Electric pocket lamp with removable battery comprising in combination a case with a removable lid, a cavity in said lid, a hole in the base of said cavity, coinciding openings in the Walls of said case and said lid, a flexible strip of metal arranged in the back end of the case, a flexible contact strip of metal provided with lateral lugs arranged in the forward end of said case and entering said openings, a screw-thread corresponding to the screw-part of a lamp on said contact strip, a lamp disposed in said cavity and screwed into said contact strip, and a switch secured to the case and controlling the free end of said contact strip.
