Description
y 1936. B. MESTEKiN SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR WRIST BANDS Filed June 8, 1955 Attorney Patented May 26, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 7 2,041,944 SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR WRIST BANDS Bernard Mestekin, Washington, D. 0. Application June 8, 1935, Serial No. 25,664
4 3 Claims. (01. 63-3) One object of my invention is in making a safety attachment to be used in connection with bracelets either used as jewelry or when used together with a wrist watch.
Another object of my invention is to make a safety attachment for the purpose stated above which will be simple to manufacture, durable and of reasonable cost.
Another object of my invention consists in making the safety attachment in a way that it will not become detached accidentally but only by the operation of the user.
Another object of my invention is in making the device detachable from any bracelet in use and transferable to another bracelet.
Still another object lies in the ease of operating the device with one hand without sacrificing its function as a positive safety device.
For a clearer understanding of the invention reference is made to the annexed drawing in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention shown as used with a wrist watch.
Fig. 2 shows in perspective one preferred form of my safety device intended to be used with a cord watch bracelet.
Fig. 3 is an end view on an increased scale of the safety device shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a similar end view to Fig. 3 but showing a modified form of the device intended to be used on a bracelet of substantially rectangular section as is common in ribbon bracelets and bracelets commonly used as jewelry.
Referring in more detail to the drawing l0 represents a wrist watch as it is worn on the wrist with the elements I ||2 of a cord bracelet attached to the watch in the conventional manner. Such bracelets are usually provided with a snap fastening means |3-|4 the common construction of which includes a latch means l5 cooperating in a. detent I6. In the ordinary wear the latch means becomes worn and unsafe opening up easily and causing the loss of both watch and wristlet. To prevent this I provide a safety attachment which consists of two ring elements I1, l8.
These ring elements are slipped upon the bracelet one at each end thereof and held there from accidental detachment by the larger size of the fastening means |3|4. One of these ring elements as shown at I! is provided with an eye l9 to which I permanently attach one end of a safety chain 20. The other end of the chain I provide with an oblong link 2| shaped substantially like 5 a keyhole. This link 2| with the larger opening attached to the chain acts as a form of bayonet locking joint cooperating with a complementary locking member 22. The locking member 22 is a short rod terminating in a head 23 the head being 10 larger than the slot in the element 2 I.
It is evident from an inspection of this form of construction that the straddling chain can not become accidentally detached, and will become detached only when the user will push the 15 link 2| on the rod of the member 22 until the head 23 can clear and pass through the larger opening of the link 2|.
Having described the device I claim as my invention:
1. A safety attachment for use in conjunction with the lock of a fastening means of a piece of jewelry comprising in combination two ring members and a chain straddling them, said chain being permanently attached to one of said ring 25 members and means on the other ring member cooperating with an end link on the chain for detachably connecting the chain to said other ring member, each of the said ring members adapted to embrace an end of the fastenings 30 means across the lock thereof.
2. A safety attachment for use in conjunction with the lock fastening of a piece of jewelry, in combination two ring members a chain having one end permanently attached to one of said ring 35 members and a bayonet joint arrangement for detachably connecting the other end of the chain to the other ring member, each of said ring members encircling an end of the fastening means across the lock.
3. In an article of jewelry having separable end portions provided with means for locking the same together, a safety attachment therefor composing in combination two members shaped to fit around and to be secured to the respective eiid portions of the article of jewelry,'a chain permanently attached at one of its ends to one of said members and means for detachably connecting the other end of said chain to the other member.
