Description

Apil 27, 1937; D. v. LEE 2,078,392
COMBINATION BOOK COVER AND BOOK MARKER Filed May 27, 1936 Patented Apr. 27, 1937 UNITED STATES Parlant OFFICE- COMBINATION BOOK MARKER COVER AND BOOK 6 Claims.
This invention relates to a combined book cover and book marks therefor.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved combination of protective book coverandvmarker support which may be readily applied to a book and when so applied may support any desired number of book marks detachably associated with the cover.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of book mark for association with such a cover.
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved combination of book cover and book mark wherein the book mark may be attached to the cover between any two leaves of a book held in said cover.
With the above and other objects in View, as will be presently apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the cover showing the inside thereof.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of one book marker as used in connection with the invention.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing a second form of book marker.
Figure 4 is a view showing the cover and a pair of the markers assembled and a book arranged therein.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the cover.
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section through the cover back showing a portion of one of the markers associated therewith.
In the invention as herein disclosed there is provided a cover member having left and right iiaps or leaves I0 and II formed integrally with an intermediate back portion I3 which is reinforced by a strip I 4 secured by stitch lines I5. At the top and bottom of this reinforcing strip there is provided a iiap I6 having an eyelet I'I adjacent each end.
'I'hrough the. eyelets I'I runs a cord I8 which is tied as at I9 so as to provide top and bottom portions 20 extending transversely of the backing strip. The free edges of each of the portions I0 and II are folded over inwardly as at 2|.
There is provided, for association with the particular cover just described, a series of book markers which are constructed to cooperate with the cover. While but two of these book markers are` particularly illustrated herein it will be understood from what follows that the invention contemplates the use of a multiplicity of such markers.
Each marker consists of an upper member or portion 22 and a parallel lower portion 23 connected by a vertical strip 24 at their outer ends. These markers are preferably stamped from thin sheet metal and have their free inner ends provided with notches 25 and the portions 24 are provided with outwardly extending fingers 26, the fingers 26 being located on the respective markers at different heights.
In the application of this invention it is to be understood that the cover member is somewhat larger in both vertical and transverse dimensions than the book to which it is to be applied. The cover is placed on the book with the free edges of the book cover held under the flaps 2|.' This leaves the top and bottom cord portions 26 exposed so that the notched arms 22 and 23 of a marker can be sprung to engage these cord portions. Then as the book is opened at a page on which a passage is located which it is desired to mark and a marker is selected which has an arm 26 properly located to indicate the position of the passage and the forks of this marker are engaged on the cords 20. Obviously as many markers are used as there are pages and passages to be marked. Preferably there will be provided with each cover member thirty of the markers with the fingers 26 at different heights.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specied.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, proportions and details of the invention without departing from its general principles so that it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the exact illustrations here shown but is to include all forms which fall within the scope claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a book cover having a book mark engaging means at the central portion of its upper and lower edges, and a book mark comprising a vertical bar and having upper and lower horizontal arms at the extreme ends of said bar each provided at one end with means for engaging detachably with the book mark engaging means of the cover.
2.. In combination, a book cover having cord portions extending along the central portions of its upper and lower edges on the inner side of the cover, and a bookmark having upper and lower horizontal arms each provided at one end with means to engage a respective cord portion and having their remaining ends connected by a vertical bar.
5 3. In combination, a book cover having a book mark engaging means at the central portions of its upper and lower edges, a book mark having upper and lower horizontal arms each provided at the extreme ends with means for engaging de- 10 tachably with the book mark engaging means of the cover and having their remaining ends connected by a vertical bar, and a passage marking finger extending horizontally from said vertical bar.
15 4. In combination, a book cover having cord portions extending along the central portions of its upper and lower edges on the inner side of the cover, a book mark having upper and lower horizontal arms each provided at one end with means 20 to engage a respective cord portion and having their remaining ends connected by a vertical bar,
and a horizontally disposed passage marking finger extending from said vertical bar.
5. A book mark of the class described comprising a vertical bar, a horizontal arm leading from each of the ends of said vertical bar, the ends of said horizontal arms being notched, and an out- Wardly extending horizontally disposed nger eX- tending from said vertical bar, said linger and horizontal arms disposed at opposite sides of said vertical bar.
6. A book mark of the class described comprising a vertical bar, a horizontal arm leading from each of the ends of said vertical bar, the ends of said arms having outwardly disposed offset portions provided with notches, and an outwardly extending Yhorizontally disposed finger extending from said vertical bar, said nger and horizontal arms disposed at opposite sides of said vertical bar.
