3 Claims.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigarette cases, and it has for its object to provide a cigarette case, which will readily permit the removal of cigarettes from 5 such case by means of a semi-automatically working arrangement therein, and which by means of a humidor embodied in said case will always keep the cigarettes in a fresh and desirable condition.

As the construction of my device is comparatively simple, the cost of manufacturing the same should be proportionately low.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views, and in which:-

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my invention.

Figure 2 is a longitudinally vertical sectional view through the same, showing the lid in a somewhat open position.

Figure 3 is a section through the line 33 in Figure 1.

Figure 4 is an end elevation of my device, showing the side lid in open position; while Figures 5, 6 and 7 are detail sections of the side lid, showing tracks and arrangement of springs.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, [0 indicates my improved cigarette case, which is provided with a top lid l l and a side lid 12. The top lid is further provided with a somewhat rectangular elevated portion 13 forthe purpose of arranging therein a sponge M, or any other substance capable of absorbing an amount of fluid necessary for producing the humidity so vital for the tobacco in order to keep the cigarettes in a perfect state of moisture. The sponge is securely held in position by a projecting flange l5 surrounding the latter.

The upper part of the box is formed with outwardly projecting flanges l6 and I6, which serve as tracks as the sides of the lid are bent to form corresponding U-shaped portions I1 and [1' adapted to engage and slide upon said tracks, while a downwardly bent portion of the lid, as shown at l8, and especially in Figure 2, somewhat serves to guide the lid, as to the correct covering position, when the latter is closed.

The side lid [2 in its normal position covers a cut-out portion min the casing, said cut-out portion being arranged to facilitate the removal of the cigarettes from the box.

Upon the side of the box have been formed flanges or tracks, 20 and 20' adapted to engage and co-operate with the side lid [2 through an arrangement as formerly described, relative to the top lid ll. Springs Hand 2!, disposed at each side of the tracks and inside of these, are adapted to be engaged by the top of the side lid and compressed by the latter, when said lid is opened. When the downward pressure upon said side lid is released, the latter will automatically return to a closed position again on account of said springs, a flange 22 serving as a stopper to the movement of the side lid.

It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, as shown, Within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not therefore wish to limit myself to the exact construction and arrangement shown and described herein.

What I claim, as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:-

1. In a device of the class described, a cigarette case open at its top and having the upper part of one edge portion cut away to facilitate an easy removal of cigarettes from the case, two co-operating lids, one of said lids being mounted upon the top of the case; flanges constituting tracks formed upon the side of the cut away edge portion, and coiled springs disposed at each sideof said tracks and inside of these, the second lid having flanges adapted to engage said tracks and being actuated by the springs in closing said second lid upon the cut away edge portion.

2. A device, as claimed in claim 1, and wherein a flange is formed upon the edge below the cut away portion for limiting the downward movement of said second lid.

3. In a device of the class described, a cigarette case having the conventional open top, and being formed with a cut-out opening adjoining the latter, whereby to permit an easy extraction of cigarettes, means for closing the top of the case and the cut-out opening and comprising two cooperating lids, one of said lids being mounted upon the top of said case and having flanges bent and adapted to engage corresponding flanges upon the latter; flanges formed upon the sides of the cut-out opening and constituting tracks, and coiled springs disposed at 7 each side of said tracks and inside these, a sec- 0nd lid having flanges adapted to engage said tracks and being actuated by the springs in closing said lid upon the cut-out opening, and a stop-flange atthe bottom of the cut-out opening for limiting thedownward movement of said second lid.
